"Recitatif"‚ by Toni Morrison‚ is a profound narrative that I believe is meant to invite readers to search for a buried connotation of the experiences that the main characters‚ Twyla and Roberta‚ face as children and as they are reunited as adults. Some of the story ’s values and meanings involving race‚ friendship and abandonment begin to emerge as the plot thickens; however‚ more messages become hidden and remain unrecognized‚ even until the very last sentence. From the very first paragraph

In Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon‚ love was used to accelerate and progress the plot of the story. Guitar’s love for his race‚ Hagar’s obsession for Milkman‚ and Milkman’s love of his ancestors are ways that Morrison was able to use the theme of love in her novel. Twyla and Roberta are the main characters in Recitatif while Maggie and the “Gar Girls” are used to emphasize the main point of the short-story. Twyla came from a poor family and remained in the same status when she was grown but even so led a happy life while marrying for love despite her financial troubles. On the other hand Roberta derives from a wealthy family and found a husband to continue her wealthy lineage although I highly doubt she married for love she appeared to be content with her life

Admittedly author Toni Morrison is not one of my favorite writers. Morrison’s novels are often dense with symbolism and allegories that are often complex to understand or can be easily misunderstood by a reader. Surprisingly The Bluest Eye quickly became one of my favorites. Like many who read for enjoyment I wanted to see the happy ending. Essentially I wanted Pecola to win‚ longed for her to receive her happy ending‚ felt it would only be fitting if in the end she learned to love herself unconditionally
