‘Shylock Is a Villain as a Result of the Way He Has Been Treated.’ Discuss.
The way in which discrimination plays a part in the 'the merchant of Venice' is very evident throughout the entire play. The view over the ' Jews' throughout the play is generally negative, this bias nature found throughout the play may influence the villainous and immoral actions performed by Shylock and his decisions which lead to him lawfully having the right to take one pound of Antonio's flesh, which Shylock immorally accepted. The situation arose when Antonio's great friend bassiano fell in love with a woman call portia and asked a loan from Antonio in order to impress the woman, not having any immediate source of money, Antonio stated that he would take a loan from a jewish money lender called Shylock, in the meanwhile Antonio had ships filled with his soon to be fortune on their way, hence the loan was sanctioned and an agreement was made but in a somewhat tragic lead up of events Antonio had lost all his boats, creating a situation where the Jew could either be merciful towards the christian, or take one pound of his flesh of which Shylock took the second option. The first major bias or discriminative action performed in the play which may have created Shylock's urge for 'revenge' may well have been when Antonio had had a quarrel with Shylock. Shylock states this when Antonio seeks a loan from Shylock, it becomes apparent that Antonio abused Shylock due to the fact that he was a Jew. Another event that may have been a stimulator towards the actions of Shylock may have been the way in which his daughters life had been intertwined with a Christians in a negative way, when shylocks daughter jessica betrays him by running away with in a way whichever emotionally hurt Shylock. A final and very strong reason for Shylock being so prejudice was due to the overall hate towards the 'Jews' in the city, it seems as though Shylock acts towards antonio in a way which expresses his hatred towards the unfair treatment towards the Jews, it seems as though all his actions

Both Antonio and Shylock attempt to rationalize their actions through racial discrimination. Shylock feels discriminated against for being a Jew and he attempts to expose the harsh treatment against Jews: "He hath disgraced me...and what 's his reason? I am a Jew. (3.1.51-55). Antonio 's resentment towards Shylock is a product of a Christian society in which Jews were widely discriminated against at the time.…

In the Merchant of Venice, Shakespeare illustrates his feelings towards Jews in 17th century England through the use of a commonly known stereotype during the time, the racial tension between Jews and Christians. Shylock is the focal point of the play, and acts as the traditional stereotype of the Jew in Elizabethan times. The merchant of venice is often seen as an anti-semitic work due to the stereotypical portrayal of the jewish character shylock. Some would argue that the most inevitable interpretation of shylock as a miserly wretch who care for nothing but his money is shakespeare expressing now – unfashionable anti-jewish views. However , one must remember that this view was seen as entirley normal and acceptable at the time, and most of the jews of elizabethan england had stoicly accepted such treatment.…

In the play “The Merchant of Venice” Shylock was the greedy and wealthy Jew, who was hated by everyone. Shylock’s occupation was to lend money to anyone who asked him to, but he put interests which no one could afford. This is one of the main reasons Shylock is hated, the other would be an obvious reason, he is a Jew and the rest of Venice consists of Christians (other than the Jewish community). Jews are known to be “money hungry”, greedy and selfish. Shylock gives no sympathy to anyone in any way, especially to his daughter Jessica. When he received the news that his…

Shylock and Antonio’s relationship is greatly complex, in that it has many issues that contribute to their affiliation of hate. They were business rivals. However, Antonio's main business is that of a merchant, buying and selling goods and shipping them to other ports, whereas Shylock is a moneylender who makes money by charging interest on loans. This is not Shylock's job by choice--there were a limited number of jobs, which Jews were allowed to do, and this was one of them. However, Antonio has been lending money to people without interest, which cuts into Shylock's business. It's rather like having a business competitor move in and start giving away the goods you are trying to sell. He's going to put you out of business. Antonio has other resources, which enable him to lend money gratis Shylock has not. On top of that, Antonio is rude and condescending to Shylock just because he is Jewish. This is stated by Shylock by asking Antonio’s friends “What is his reason? I am a Jew.” He may not be the rudest and most condescending person in Venice toward Jews, but the fact that he is lumps him in with the worst offenders in Shylock's mind.…

In the Merchant of Venice, Shylock states, “He hath disgraced me and laughed at my losses, mocked at my gains, scorned my nation, thwarted my bargains, cooled my friends, heated mine enemies- and what’s his reason? I am a Jew. Hath now a Jew eyes? Hath not Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions?” (Shakespeare 110) This quote explains Shylock’s relationship with Antonio by stating that Antonio has laughed at his losses, made fun of his earnings, humiliated his race and turned his friends against him. Upset Shylock goes on stating that all of this is because he’s a Jew. He goes on claiming that Jews are just as human as anyone else. This statement exemplifies the idea of how Jews were treated,…

Shakespeare’s main character, Shylock, is central to constant discrimination simply because he is a Jew. This is demonstrated in Act 1, Scene 3 when Antonio borrows money from Shylock. This scene is the first time the audience is introduced to Shylock and he quickly speaks of how he has been mistreated by Antonio because of his religion “You call me misbeliever, cut-throat dog, And spit upon my Jewish gabardine”. Shakespeare then reinforces this when Salarino is attempting to convince Shylock not to take a pound of Antonio’s flesh by questioning what good it would do. Shylock explains that “if nothing else it will feed my revenge” and how “He hath disgraced me…and what’s his reason? I am a Jew.” (3,1).…

Discrimination proves that injustice is shown in both plays. In The Merchant Of Venice, Jews are often mistreated by Christians and this results in Shylock’s mistreatment throughout the play. The Jewish community was not treated well in the time of The Merchant of Venice. They were never considered to be citizens of a town, in this case florence, they were never respected by christians, and they were forced to wear red hats that showed them that they were separate from the citizens. They are forced to live in the Ghetto, which is just a group of building where only Jews live. Solanio and Salerio, both Christians, refer to Shylock as “the dog jew” which is just Shakespeare saying that they are treated like mutts, which in turn supports the stereotype that jews were animals (2.8.14). Another stereotype was that jews were greedy. When Jessica, Shylock’s daughter, runs away with all of Shylock’s money, he is reported to have been running down the street shouting “O my ducats! O my daughter!” (2.8.15). This means that he cares about his money equally as he loves his daughter. Then when you look at Jessica, she too is exemplifying stereotypes of thievery, deceit, and of not being sincere. She changes her religion as though she’s changing a flat tire, she steals the ring and the money of her father, and she lies to her dad as well!…

    A Pessimistic View

Firstly, The Merchant of Venice was believed to have been written between 1596 and 1598 during the renaissance in Italy. It explores the treatment of Jews, by making a character Shylock a very stereotypical version of a Jew. The portrayal from this book and time period of all Jews was that they were concerned with money (ducats), blood-thirsty, greedy, and physically ugly. Jews at the time during the renaissance were treated differently, by being placed in ghettos and told to make a living. Most Jews placed interest rates on their lending of money, making the Christians look down on them and calling them filthy. The treatment and events throughout the novel, for example when Antonio spits on Shylock, show the ways in which the Jews in that time period were actually discriminated against. The same intolerant behaviour is evident in today’s society, as people still have stereotypical views to Jews as "cheap" and "greedy" ,and as we view Jews to contain a certain look. Just as we view Jews to contain a certain…

Throughout the play, The Merchant of Venice, Shakespeare cultivates the idea of “Shylock the Jew” being both a villain and a victim each depending on the reader’s interpretation of the play. 16th century Venice was largely Roman Catholic and Christian. I think in correctly interpreting the play, we have to take a look at what influences Shakespeare may have had in devising Shylock’s character.…

Although the Merchant of Venice, written by the renowned playwright William Shakespeare, is part of brilliant romantic comedy series, it is known largely for its drama and intense allusions to themes and concerns of the time period, which may be looked at differently in the modern society. The title of the play refers to the character of Antonio, who is ‘the Merchant of Venice’, even though the Jewish moneylender, Shylock is the more prominent character, who leaves the audience with strong emotions and a desire to introspect and reflect upon their own lives. Shylock is well known for his dazzling speech in act three, where he manages to elude the villainous, egoistic, and disreputable façade of himself, which is put up due to the naïve stereotypes retained by the Europeans of the 16th century, in spite of later returning to his ways of deception and evil at the completion of his monologue. Shylock’s speech addresses numerous themes and ideas that can be interpreted in various ways depending on the audience’s setting.…

    Merchant of Venice

The Merchant of Venice illustrates a clear discrepancy between the moral values of its Christian characters and those of Shylock; at last revealing favor for the mercy, generosity, love, and self-sacrifice of the Christians. Irrespective of the religious hypocrisy displayed by the Christians of the play, they ultimately prove the victors, while those who disregard the virtues of Christian doctrine suffer highly disagreeable consequences. Shylock, a miserly Jew and heartless usurer characterized by his greed, deception, and love of money, seems to have no concept of mercy or forgiveness. In his first aside, Shylock paints of himself a monstrous portrait establishing the nature of his character, when, in reference to Antonio, he asserts “I hate him for he is a Christian” (I, iii, 37) and resolutely concludes his speech with “Cursed be my tribe if I forgive him” (I, iii, 46-47). Here, Shylock makes plain his unwillingness to forgive Antonio on the grounds that, by lending money freely, Antonio is detracting from his business. In contrast, Antonio, the Christian merchant and protagonist, is introduced as a selfless and charitable friend to Bassanio as he hazards to him an absurd quantity of money in a less than ideal circumstance. Without questioning the reason for Bassanio’s request, Antonio has already determined to give him all he desires, saying “Within the eye of honor, be assured/ My purse, my person, my extremest means/Lie all unlocked to your occasions” (I, i, 137-139). Antonio does not hesitate for an instant to sacrifice all of his material wealth for the benefit of a friend.…

Throughout both plays “Othello” and “The merchant of Venice” they face many obstacles including racial and religious discrimination. In “The merchant of Venice”, Antonio, a wealthy man, discriminates Shylock who lends them money. To compare, In “Othello”, Iago who serves for Othello does not like him because he didn’t get the promotion he thought he deserved. During the play Othello is racially discriminated mostly by Iago. A key reason why Antonio and Shylock do not get along is because Shylock is of the Jewish race and Antonio is a Christian. In act 1, scene 3 on page 16, line 39, Shylock blatantly states “I hate him for he is a Christian.” This supports that Shylock loathes Antonio for his religion. Another account of racism is clearly exemplified when Shylock tells Antonio “you call me misbeliever, cutthroat dog, and spit upon my Jewish gabardine” and Antonio responds with “I am as like to call thee so again, to spit on thee again, to spurn thee too.” In this passage Shylock plainly points out the racist remarks Antonio says about him, but still Antonio intents that he will never change his behavior for Shylock is a Jew. Shylock acknowledges the anti-Semitic views of the play when he talks to Salarino on page 49 (lines 55-67). Shylock states, “I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions,…
