Sources of Water Pollution in Textile Industries
Process waste from sizing
Chemical processing: - desizing, scouring, bleaching, mercerising, dyeing, printing and finishing
Waste water from rinsing and washing after each step of processing
Miscellaneous waste:- Cooling water, Boiler blow down, floor and machine washing, spills and leaks.
Sanitary waste and domestic waste.
PRACTICAL APPROACH TOWARDS WATER POLLUTION CONTROL
Reduction in the water volume.
Reduction in the conc. /amount of chemicals used thereby reducing their harmful effects.
Reduction of waste concentration by recovery and reuse.
Reduction of waste concentration by chemical substitution.
Reduction of waste concentration by process modification.
Segregation of effluent of each process.
Devising suitable treatment for ultimate disposal, to meet the requirements.
To explore the economics related to reuse of treated effluent. Reduction in waste water volume
Reducing the number of washing and use of hot water in washings
Use of counter current washing
Use of standing bath in dyeing
Use of low Liquor Ratio systems
Good house keeping and prevention of leakages and spillages (A reduction of 20 - 40 % volume of wastewater generated is possible)
Reduction in conc. / amount of chemicals
Optimum use is necessary, which is not always possible in textile processing industry
Textile processing involves heterogeneous interactions between fibre material - solid and chemicals – liquid, solutions or emulsions.
Essential operations involved in Textile Processing :
Maximum penetration of chemicals into fibre material to achieve desired interactions.
Thorough removal of unused/unfixed chemicals and impurities from the textile material.
Because of the heterogeneity of interaction, only limited absorption of various types of chemicals and colorants used for chemical processing onto the textile fibre materials is possible.

The solution was filtered, and the solid indigo was placed into the filter flask to reduce indigo to leucoindigo with 10mL of 3M NaOH.     This study compares the absorbency of two different cotton brands, Cleene and SM Bonus. The two brands are chosen based on the price differences, and analysis has been conducted to show if significant differences on the absorbency exist between these brands to justify the large price difference, P27.50. The cotton brands are subjected to two types of liquid: water and astringent, where one gram of cotton is completely submerged for five seconds. The amount of liquid absorbed by the cotton brand is the response variable, and is measured by subtracting the final weight of liquid from the initial weight. Twenty samples have been subjected to the two conditions, therefore having five replicates for each combination of factors. The experimental data showed a significant difference among the results. Upon further examination, it was found out that the difference occurred due to the type of liquid used. The rate of evaporation and the densities of the liquids have contributed largely on the rejection of the null hypothesis. Thus, the two cotton brands have no significant difference in their absorbency capacity. Analysis and implications of the results were discussed and recommendations are made on the basis of the experimental results.…

    The WPC (water pollution control plant) of Akron usually receives about 70-75 million gallons of water to treat a day. On days that it rains, over 100 million gallons of water is collected, because of the ‘combined’ sewers of the water runoff, through a pipe that is 110 inches in diameter. Though other wastewater treatment plants built their sewers separate from each other, Akron decided to build a combined sewer system because it was more cost effective. Once the waste water arrives at the treatment plant through many miles of sewage lines, it enters it’s first process called ‘initial screening’ which is used to keep material waste such as, diapers, dentures, cloth and plastic from entering the raw waste water area. After all the large waste and grit is screened and disposed of, the water is left with only about 1% of pollutants, which is treated with various techniques, including an aerobic process and followed by the use of chemicals, such as chlorine and bleach.
