“The Torrance Tornado,” Now “the Torrance Olympian”

On a sweltering day in July, our hometown hero represented Torrance in Olympic fashion. Louie Zamperini attempted his bid at a spot on the US Olympic team yesterday during the grueling 5000m race at the Olympic Trials. For those of you who do not know, this distance is unfamiliar territory for Louie, but he felt that his chances of winning a spot were better in this race. The race could not have been scripted any better. The runners took their mark and were off with the sound of the gun. Louie remained relatively incognito, as he dropped back right off the bat for a good nine laps. One by one, Louie made his march up to the front of the pack. The final lap was upon the runners. Lash, the leader, gave himself a breather and dropped behind Tom Deckard. Louie was positioned well behind Tom. Apparently, the runners ahead of Louie weren't aware that this was the prime time for Louie to strike. Louie put it into overdrive and flew right by Deckard, only Lash was in his way of 1st place. The two ran side by side for what felt like an eternity. Both were starting to feel the agonizing effects of the 5000m and were giving it their last ounce of strength for the final 100 yards. The tape was upon them and they dove right past the judges in a photo finish. Louie later said, “you couldn't put a hair between us.” The stadium erupted into cheers and then fell silent, anxiously awaiting the judges decision, as were both Lash and Zamperini. Finally, you could hear slight microphone noises, the announcers were ready. Zamperini, he said, had won! Alas, upon further review they recanted their decision and gave the match to Lash. That didn't phase anyone in the Zamperini household or anyone in Torrance because “The boy with the fast finish” secured himself a place on the Olympic team!

With the previous unit, we explored personal writing suitable for academic audiences by reading scholarship from monographic texts and academic journals. For this unit, we’ll shift our emphasis to public writing that is also suitable for academic audiences. While we’ll plan to read academic scholarship, we’ll also explore different genres for which academic texts are suitable, including editorial publications. More specifically, we’ll look at opinions and letters to the editor published by the Western Herald. As we plan to work specifically with the letter to the editor genre, we’ll pay close attention to how argumentation styles, uses of evidence, and consultation of sources differs when writing a scholarly autobiographical academic essay. To prepare for the composition of editorials, we’ll read sample letters to the editors, and arguments pertaining to cultural diversity.…

Louie created many of his own problems as a young kid, once he found his love for running, Louie found his identity. Ever since Louie was a young boy he would, drink, smoke, steal, and fight, he was a “one-boy insurgency,” (Hillenbrand 6). Growing up Louie got involved in bad things, he did not have any self-respect or respect for others. “You could beat him to death,” said Sylvia, “and he wouldn’t say ‘ouch’ or cry.” He just put his hands in front of his face and took it,”(Hillenbrand 9). After the problems Louie has caused for himself and the heartache for his family, he decides to get away. His experience was shameful, resulting in a return home and surrender to his brother Pete, agreeing to start a regimen of running. Throughout the training, Louie became a new person. “He didn’t run from something or to something, not for anyone or…

Measles is a highly contagious disease that can cause serious illness and later on complications such as deafness and pneumonia, and unfortunately it can potentially lead to death. Recently ten cases involving measles have been discovered in Quebec, eight in Ontario and also several more cases in other countries. However, the first case in Quebec was linked to the famous theme park - Disneyland – in California which is also linked to 114 cases in the United States. Ontario’s specialists quote, “It is important for people to be fully immunized against this serious disease; it’s the best way to prevent measles and its spread.” A lot of parents are under the impression that this vaccination is unnecessary so their children don’t receive this vaccine, however the vaccine is the only thing that can protect them from catching the easily spread disease. This article was written from the perspective of the centers of Disease Control and Prevention in Canada. There is a hint of bias in this article because it is all in favor of the vaccination and how essential it is in order to prevent the disease from spreading further. This article is very informative because before I didn’t know about how contagious and fatal this disease could be and what consequences it can have. It made me realize just how important it is to get vaccinations to prevent myself from this disease. It is estimated that one child in a 1000 will develop a brain disease, and from the 1000 that get infected one or two will die, you may be passing by someone and get infected without even noticing, so it is important to be aware of such disease.…

Even before you are born your name has been chosen. A name is something you can attach to your identity but it is not everything. A name does not define who you are, it defines who your parents are. Names are used to help make communication a convenience. Without names humans would not be able to communicate with each other. How would we save phone numbers in our phone? Hurricanes are named so we can differentiate one from another. The hurricane’s name does not explain the identity or how strong the hurricane is. Our past, life choices and actions define your identity more than your name.…

For over 2000 years alchemy has developed as a means to explore the world around us. It has become known as the ancient art of working to attain wisdom and immortality through the manipulation of elements. The exact origins of alchemy are unknown, but it is believed to have begun in either Greece or Egypt from records of alchemists found in Alexandria around 300 BC. Afterwards, it spread to China, India, and Europe. The philosophy of alchemists was to discovering how the baser metals might be converted into gold and silver, the discovery of a potion that could prolong life, and the manufacturing of an artificial process of human life. This elixir became known as the Philosopher’s Stone. Along with a materialistic meaning there is also a religious view point. The conversion of metals can be believed to be a symbol of change to a higher consciousness. Also, based on conclusions made from examinations of natural procedures alchemists reached the idea that nature was divided into four primary regions: the dry, the moist, the warm, and the cold, from which everything that survives must be derived from. Alchemists also divided nature into genders: male and female.…

I quickly started to doubt myself, I regretted it all. We began to line up for the race to start, I was shaking uncontrollably. People around me were talking at me, I didn't process a word. "BANG", the official pulled the trigger to begin the race. 200 girls scrambling to reach the front of a massive ocean of different colored jerseys. As the race progressed the pain I felt throughout my legs, arms, and chest was unbearable; but soon diminished by the vigerating sensation I experienced every time I passed somebody. My competitive nature was flourishing with passion. All my nervous energy seemed to escape into the array of grey storm clouds. "Speed up, speed up", coming from the little voice inside my head as I neared the last 400m. I can still feel the energizing emotion of accomplishment I obtained as I crossed the checkered finish line. I may not have won the race, but the self-confidence and empowerment I gain from this sport is…
