With an uprise of violence in the media today, it is important to evaluate how exposure to such media may affect its viewers, especially children. Conclusive studies have been ran that indicates there may be a connection between aggressive behavior in these adulesents and violent materials such as movies, television shows, and different forms of art. These materials have been suggested to have short-term and long-lastings effects.…
In “Violent Media is Good for Kids,” the author Gerard Jones claims that violent media is good for children because it prepares them for violence in reality and teaches them how to control with rage. He argues against people’s view of violent media being negative influence on children. This view suggests that it is important to keep children away from violent media because it promotes imaginary gun battles, killing, blood, and violent fighting. In response, the author argues that such violence in media can give children a tool to master their rage.…
In the article “Censorship of Violence in Popular Entertainment is Justified” by Robert Peters, he claims that there is too much violence in the media nowadays. Peters works for a company called Morality in Media that are a non-profit organization that works to “uphold standards of decency in the media”. According to Peters, the four biggest problems with violence in the media is; that there is too much of it, it can be easily imitated, the manner that it’s depicted, and that there’s too much gun use. The ending problem with Peters article is not that he has no support for his own reasons, but it is that his solutions are not feasible. He says that one of his solutions would be to pass a law that would be punishing to the ones distributing media violence to minors. There is already a law in effect for that, and Peters even names the exact law in his article, he just…
Censorship is the suppression of text, images, or ideas by authority, and it is used to control what people can think, see, and create. Censorship is and has been been used all over the world because the leaders of these territories believe their citizens should be blocked from specific topics. These topics can range from politics to religion depending on what those leaders believe should not be allowed. In the article by Karen Sternheimer, “Do Video Games Kill?” Sternheimer shows us that despite that even though violent video games are being blamed for their players committing violent crimes, most should not be censored. Her reason is that there are more factors that cause people to commit violent acts that aren’t because of violent video…
Television and movies are a major part of our everyday lives. Many of these movies and tv shows are influenced by real life situations giving them a natural and major influence on our behavior. There has always been study as to whether violence in movies and tv shows causes violent behavior in the younger generation. This has been shown by individuals in some U.S. schools violently imitating things they have seen in movies and shows. Research will also show that this violent behavior amongst the younger generation is increasing because of the influence of tv. The reason that television shows and movies influence us is that we try to associate with what we see. We try to find similarities between the characters and ourselves. Much of what we learn and associate with comes from documentaries. Some of the more popular documentaries are true crime mysteries. Along with these are documentaries about gang life and drugs. For the most part, these shows are meant to be educational in the matter of safety and the hope of teaching the population to make better decisions. Many tv shows such as CSI, Law and Order, Bones, and some others are meant for entertainment purposes. They are fictional dramas that may be based on true events. These true crime dramas have caused many different reactions. For some they are just entertainment and they do not associate anything from the episodes into their daily lives, but for many others, this is not the case. There is now something called the “CSI effect” where the exaggerated portrayal of forensic science on crime dramas actually influences public perception. Jurors are demanding more forensic evidence in criminal trials which actually raises the standard of proof for prosecutors. This turns into a “snowball” effect because as prosecutors demand more forensic evidence, so do…
Many television shows are said to influence viewers. My focus media is MTV’s controversial Jackass movies. This project report will attempt to gauge the effects of television violence. Analyzing consequences, we will examine the messages that are inherent in media texts.…
Violent media influence the psychology and society. Many teachers, parents, and scientists blame the violent media that bring negatively affects. For example, a lot of news have reported the violent media cause violent incidents so far. Parents restrict their children away from the violent games because they assume violent games, which affect their children unhealthy psychology while they are growing up. However, violent media also can bring advantage: developing coping skills, taking away stress, and entertaining fun moment.…
I read two essays, “Violent Media Numbs Viewers to Pain of Others”, by Diane Swanbrow and “Hate Violence? Turn It Off!” by Tim Goodman. In the first essay the author states that violent media exposure can reduce helping behavior. Basically meaning that people that watch violent media are less willing to help others when it’s needed because they are used to the violence and adapt to it. In the second essay, the author states that people feel that watching violent movies is a problem and is tired of parents complaining that it is damaging to children. Tim Goodman feels that parents should stop complaining and turn off the violence then through child lock and several other ways instead of getting rid of it completely.…
Certain images, news articles, books, and advertisements can negatively affect a child. A benefit of media censorship is that “It limits negative advertisements” (11 Pivotal Pros and Cons…).Children having access to inappropriate advertisements can give them awful ideas such as certain opinions on certain topics. Censorship can also “save the children from violence” (11 Pivotal Pros and Cons…) such as the protests in Ferguson, Missouri.Violence can be included with inappropriate advertisements or media. “Censoring extreme violent material is beneficial, particularly among children. With the access to all sorts of media made easier these days, younger generations can easily fall prey to this sort of content” (11 Pivotal Pros and Cons...).While this censorship can save children from violence, it can also keep the wrong people in…
Violence in the media is repeatedly blamed for violence in children, while it needs to be realized that there are so many other factors that feed into the behavioral development of a child. “Media violence is a risk factor that, working in concert with others, can exacerbate bad behavior.” (Cutler). The effects of violent media have been seen in children; however other risk factors contribute to trigger the response. There is no way of noting that violent media alone causes bad behavior. “One of the reasons so many media violence studies have been done is that the phenomenon may be too complex to study conclusively” (Cutler). The complexity of the accusation against the media is preventing any solid conclusion, and many of those studies have gone on to note that violent media affects children who have already been exposed to other various risk factors. To say violent media itself is corrupting youngsters is unfair to say the least. If the main focus is to ensure the safety of children, a second look needs to be taken into how the media in itself affects children.…
Many movies, television shows, music songs, and video games are filled with violence: murder scenes, nonstop profanity, rape and torture scenarios. By placing scenes like these in the movies for the children and teenagers to see, the media is causing them to become more violent than it already is. What has our society come to these days? Everywhere we look, violence is present; in the streets, back alleys, schools, and even at home. Even if one might be a pacifist, violence will keep its way into our homes through the television. Many parents these days are busy with their work, and sometimes it is hard to keep track what their children do. They are working singles or couples who must rely on others for the parenting and raising their children. Even baby sitters use television as the easiest source of entertainment for the children. Since every family has televisions and the children play video games almost every day, truly the media affects the children. The average hours of American youth watching television is about four hours, which means children spend more time watching television than in any other activity, except sleep, after school. So, parents should control the television that children watch. They need to be aware that media violence affects in the real world.…
There are so much going on in the world everyday, we receive the information by newspaper, internet and other Medias. Images containing violence are shown throughout the newspaper.(e.g. war images, strike images etc) Though I strongly disagree that violent or offensive images should be shown in public Medias, as this can result to influence on children, offend the subject, or causing the information to be misinterpreted.…
Violence is Cool Or So the Media Tells Us: An Exploration of the Correlation Between the Media’s Presentation of Violence and Society’s Views On Real-Life Violence…
Observers agree that by doing this, it would benefit their children for the reason that, “ The impressionable young mind can't differentiate between real and make believe. Therefore, the amount of violence shown affects the perception of young child” (Sharma). It is very difficult for young children to separate fantasy from reality which makes them more unaware of what’s right and wrong due to the influence of media. In the stages of development, children often are heavily influenced by the things they see happening around them, this includes things seen in the media. “The vivid portrayal of violence as a means of justice gives them a false sense of right and wrong. Hence the amount of violence the media broadcasts ought to be censored at least for children. Also the casual approach towards topics of sex and pornography is giving very wrong ideas to the young minds” (Sharma). Violence and sexual content are overused in the media making it hard to escape especially for children. These negative aspects of media give children thoughts about bad things and behaviors that they wouldn’t think of otherwise. Protecting children from things like violence and sex is most important when they are still at a stage of their life where they are easily influenced and have not developed to their entirety. By censoring the media, it would affect young children in a positive way and prevent children from going in the wrong direction in…
Censorship in the United States is important. It helps to prevent excessive violence on television, movies and video games that can potentially pollute the minds of individuals and young children. Having too much violence on television shows can pollute the minds of young children at an early age. Young children are followers not leaders. It’s up to adults to show them right from wrong.…
