Henry Louis Mencken has said, "most people want security in this world, not liberty". When the security of others becomes involved in certain situations, suddenly liberty or privacy does not seem so important. Even though Many students feel that security cameras would invade their privacy, schools should have security cameras because students a would have better academic performance and would feel more protected. Students think of security cameras as an invasion of their privacy. Pubilius Syrus once said, "Count not him among your friends who will retail your privacies to the world". Students would feel uncomfortable with the fact of a stranger watching their every move throughout the day. Many of them oppose the need for cameras protecting them since less than 1% of all homicides among school-aged children occur in or around school grounds or on the way to and from school. (Centers for Disease Control, 1997). Even though many students consider security cameras an invasion of privacy, schools should have them because students would have a better academic performance. Once students know that someone is constantly watching them, they will become more careful with what they do or say in classrooms for example cheating or disrespecting their teachers. Another example that would improve the students performance in school is that teachers willtake more consideration into how they teach their classes knowing that they are being supervised. "America's future will be determined by the home and the school. The child becomes largely what he is taught; hence we must watch what we teach, and how we live (Jane Addams)." Schools need security cameras in order to protect those in the school or on school grounds. Between 1994 and 1999, 220 school associated violent events ocurred, resulting in 253 deaths of which 74.5% of these involved firearms. Handguns caused almost 60% of these deaths.
