Part A
Importance of implementing productivity and performance standards:
Standards represent the level of performance required for that task for that particular operation. Performance standards indicate what must be done and how the job should be done. Developing performance stands is the first step to ensuring that all employees carry out the work in a consistent manner. Productivity standards are then the basis for developing a staffing guide. The staffing guide is combined with a business forecast to create employee work schedules. Productivity is then continuously enhanced by revising performance standards (Jones, 2012)
Productivity and performance standards provide a way in which managers and supervisors can evaluate and measure the performance of staff and ultimately align the outcomes with the interests of the hotel’s owners and operators (Butler & Braun,
2010)

Peter Drucker, the late economist, once said that ‘if you can’t measure it, you cannot manage it’; performance standards need to be results oriented and not task oriented, as no workplace can talk standards when they haven’t established measurable standards for their team to follow. (Cherry, 2011)
Establishing an effective performance standard system reduces low productivity and high turnover as employees are given clear direction in what to do, they are taught how to do it, and ultimately know how well they are doing because there is an objective standard of measurement that accompanies the performance standard system. An article on Developing Performance Standards, (2010) states that there are five major reasons for low productivity and high turnover among people working at routine hospitality jobs:
