PLSC 101 Final Exam Study Guide
The final will be held Monday December 9th from 8-10 in the regular classroom. The test will be comprehensive (cover the whole quarter) and include three parts, multiple choice, short answer and essay. Please bring a large bluebook for the essay section (you can purchase on in the campus bookstore or coffee shops). Please note: There will be no makeup exams except in the case of documented illness/emergency. If you find that you are in such a situation please notify as soon as you are able kristen.parris@wwu.edu , contact the Office for Student Life and plan on taking the exam on Friday December 14th at 12:30.
Parts One and Two (50%) will look much like the first two tests, a combination of multiple choice and short answer. The questions below are meant to help you prepare. Most of the questions are drawn from the reading assigned and class materials presented since the second test. 1. Define globalization. Provide two examples of two globalizing forces and explain each. 2. What is sovereignty? Identify to forces that challenge state sovereignty in the contemporary world. 3. What is liberalization and how is it different from democratization. Distinguish political liberalization from economic liberalization. Provide examples of each. 4. What is meritocracy and how is it different from democracy? Identify an example of a government or US state agency that is based on the principle of democracy and one based on the principle of meritocracy. 5. What is a bureaucracy and how is it different from a legislature? 6. What is divided government in the presidential system and how is it different from coalition government in a parliamentary system? Can China have divided government? Why or why not? 7. Identify three ways that the National People’s Congress is institutionally different from the US Congress. 8. Define terrorism, provide an example and explain why it is a good clear cut example of terrorism.
