You can investigate a historical epoch and watch as others, arriving at disparate conclusions, paint a portrait with a selection of colors chosen to fulfill their needs. A man is bound to feel that in the careless approach of others, he himself stands accused: is he not guilty of the same crime, of distorting history to his own ends, lacking merely the person with sufficient subtlety to call him to account?

Joachim Fest said that the political maturity of the German people came only after the loss of their inner, spiritually romantic “interior”– the relic of feudalism that had not yet given way. This world of glorious Heroes and Grand Gestures which Wagner seeked to portray in music, and which Hitler forged a connection to largely through Wagner’s operas, apparently watching Siegfried 30 or more times. Ah, Heroic artwork.

Among the reading assignments, the chapter “Who Owns the Past?” in Dangerous Game by MacMillan piqued my interest to elaborate on. In this chapter, she emphasizes that history is written by many historians who have their own views, interpretations, and biases. In this regard, she implies that we should not simply believe in what historians claim, but dig into its sources and figure out from many perspectives. There are many ‘bad’ history produced by historians without offering a wide range of views and this can be used as an instrument that can largely influence on people by giving them prejudice on certain events. There are always reasons behind each event and it is important to find out what indeed happened as well as where the history is…

Although events in history occurred over a long span of time and development, history first became an academic subject a little more than 100 years ago (McNeill 12). Since then, a plethora of controversies appeared regarding how historians, scholars, and intellectuals should examine and analyze history. Among the initial methods of studying history was the scientific research method, or scientific source criticism, which fundamentally extracts valid, legitimate facts from a diverse range of historical sources. Throughout time, however, the facts derived from this method of historical study gradually altered, leading to a new method of historical study: using facts and combining them with opinions and goals to constitute personal interpretations. As Oscar Handlin zealously asserts, historians and scholars should provide a strict examination of history based on a chronological study of known and verifiable facts as opposed to using verifiable facts as the basis for their own interpretation, influenced by their own group, experiences, beliefs, and personal motives. Through implementing a strict examination of history, historians can successfully detect and eradicate bias in their writings, allow the government as well as individuals to gain an insight into the past in order to secure and progress the future, and grasp the magnitude of truth.…

"Everyone has a moment in history which belongs particularly to him. It is the moment when his emotions achieve their most powerful sway over him, and afterward when you say to this person " the world today" or "life" or "reality" he will assume that you mean this moment, even if it is fifty years past. The world, through his unleashed emotions, imprinted itself upon him and he carries the stamp of that passing moment forever." (Knowles, 32)…

Now that I have access to this modern interpretation of history I realized that the way that history is taught in lower level course it to tell some part of the truth, but not go in-depth with it or interpret it. So teachers were teaching me the sugar coated basic facts of history, which I found unfair because I found that information to hold true and never questioned those…

Two nations arose from the ashes of the Third Reich, West Germany, the BDR, occupied by the Western members of the Allied powers, and East Germany, the GDR, occupied by the Soviet Union. As a result of conflicting ideals between East and West, the two Germany’s would develop separately until their eventual reunification at the end of the 20th century. It is an indisputable fact that German culture was forever changed as a result of the outcome of World War II, and the horrors perpetrated by Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich. From the moment of surrender onwards, the culture of Germany would begin to be defined by the occupiers of Germany. In West Germany, this influence was spear-headed by American implementation of the Marshall Plan. While the Marshall…

Feudalism was a mix between the Latin Empire and the Germanic invasions. Therefore, the Roman and German economic systems were fused together to create it. The two societies were very different, but after spending some time so close together, began to adopt parts of each other. Christianity was adopted, and Germanic law superseded that of Roman law. One main difference was that Roman society had privately held land, where as German society did not.…

As the impact of World War One took its toll on Europe countries like Russia, Italy and Germany were in dire need of a change. Germany was most impacted by the war and was left in a state where everyday citizens were homeless, jobless, and starving. Looking for someone save Germany, Germans were in a desperate need for change and turned to group of radicals that were rising in power at a rapid rate known as the Nazis. Looking for someone to “save Germany” the Nazi’s unconventional but radical beliefs gave many Germans a strong sense of hope. “One of the reasons the Nazi ideology was so successful in eliciting support for the party and consensus behind its program was that its structure was built central concepts that, in the…
