Marijuana has been illegal since 1937. The Marijuana Tax Act, enforced because people believe men of color would solicit sex from white women while under the influence of marijuana. According to multiple tests and the statistics more people have died from cigarettes and alcohol. Marijuana should be legal due to the shear fact that it is safer than alcohol and cigarettes. Marijuana to this day, after 79 years, in some places is still illegal and believed to be more dangerous than cigarettes. This myth is 100% false. About 6 million people die every year from smoking cigarettes including second hand smoke. Statistics show that by 2030 the annual death rate will be 8 million. compare this to virtually nobody dying from a direct cause of Marijuana smoking the numbers are gradually in favor of Marijuana being safer. In fact it takes a consumption of 15 pounds of Marijuana in 15 minutes to “overdose”, which still may not even be fatal. In the film Super High Me,…

For over 75 years now the United States has tried to prevent the use and sale of marijuana but despite this valiant effort there are over 25 million Americans that use marijuana annually, and cannabis is…
Growing up, everyone is told that, “Drugs are bad for you,” time and time again. Now as a kid you don’t really understand the reasoning behind it, but you listen to your authority figure regardless. I remember being told this my entire life and even to this very day. But as I got older I realized that people would still use drugs even though it’’s illegal. I could never understand why someone would go against the law and jeopardize their life just to use drugs? The drug that I am talking about is marijuana, and surprisingly it is all around us. Marijuana is even referred to in today’s media Mainstream media sources that people enjoy, like music, movies, and TV shows, do not even bother to leave the drug out of their system. Now being a young adult and having my own personal experience with the drug and knowing its effects on others, I wonder why it’s not legal. Why is it that this drug has become illegal all over the world? The debate to legalize marijuana in the United States of America has been fought over nonstop since the existence of the drug and its effects. Marijuana has been tested and proven to provide a very positive impact on the American society for many reasons. Some of these reasons are for America’s economy, health and even crime. These reasons could very well help America thrive in the future and that is why Marijuana should be legalized in the United States of America.…
How would you feel if you had a degenerative disease and the one medicine that helped you the most was not allowed to be prescribed to you and was also illegal for you to obtain? That is the case for many Multiple Sclerosis(MS)patients today. MS affects patients in many different ways, but medical marijuana (Cannibis) can help releive the symptoms of MS in these patients, if only it was legal to prescribe.…
Marijuana is the growing topic in Americans daily lives; shockingly people are blind to realize that this substance will probably be one of the deadliest drugs in the next decade. “History repeats itself” a wise man once said, and this isn’t the first time or the last time America will use the excuses to make illegal substances that kill. The generations of the 20th century where blind and medically illiterate to the dangers of cigarettes in fact they believed it was health approved. Only a few decades later people started to realize the demons of smoking and plagued America with 5 million deaths a year ever since.…
Concerns on the drug are understandable; many people fear that marijuana can lead to the use and abuse of harder drugs such as heroin and cocaine. “Marijuana is far less addictive and far less subject to abuse than many drugs now used as muscle relaxants, hypnotics and analgesics”(Lester Grinspoon, MD and James B. Bakalar, JD). Medical marijuana should not be considered as a drug but more like a healing herb. Marijuana isn’t even a drug, it’s a plant. Therapeutic use of marijuana has a history spanning over 4,500 years. Around 2700 B.C., in Egypt, marijuana (cannabis sativa) was used as a treatment for sore eyes; the Greeks used cannabis as a remedy to treat inflammation earache and edema (Teresa Odle and Clare Hanrahan). Even today, clinical studies have shown that marijuana is effective against relieving nausea and vomiting following chemotherapy treatments for cancer. The herb has also been…
I don't understand why cannabis is still illegal in this country. To this day, I have not heard an intelligent argument against the legalization and regulation of cannabis. There is so much negative controversy that we get from supports. The fact is, many people would outlaw fast food, cigarettes, and tanning beds because of the harm that they cause America. But this is America and there is about their freedom and this is about their choice. Give the people in our states the choice to enjoy…
Legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes has been an extremely controversial topic, one that has it supporters who have long fought the opposition. Although marijuana has been used for thousand of years to provide relief from many health problems, it still remains an illegal drug in the United States. There are many doctors who support the effectiveness of the use of marijuana as treatment for many medical conditions. People who oppose the legalization of marijuana for medicinal purposes would claim that legalizing the drug would lead to abuse of the drug for recreational use. This is important claim for the opposition. However, after looking at all the information that has been gathered…
If something does more good ,than bad ,then is it truly bad? This is the case with marijuana. The United States groups marijuana in with much harsher drugs such as heroin, cocaine, and other opiates which are proven to lead to death. The federal government fails to realize the benefits which marijuana provides. These benefits range from helping the medical field expand into cheaper and more beneficial solutions to helping solve financial issues for state and federal governments. This implementation would be unnerving however most states have already legalized marijuana and their results provide a great pathway for a full legalization. Medical marijuana should be legal because it has legitimate medical uses,…
How many people here have smoked cannabis, commonly known as marijuana? Most people probably wouldn’t say if they have because of the fact that it is a criminal activity. But why is smoking marijuana frowned upon in our society? If you think about it, it is less lethal than tobacco and alcohol, and would probably bring in more revenue than both. The government could benefit by taxing its sales. Marijuana has been proven to be safe and it is supported by many celebrities and famous people throughout time. I believe that medical marijuana should be legalized in order to help those who are ill, to revive the economy, and to help minimize crime.…
Recently, the controversial debate over legalizing marijuana has become more relevant than ever before. In the states of Washington and Colorado marijuana is currently legal for recreational use. In Michigan the cities of Detroit, Flint and Grand Rapids have decriminalized the drug. Also, in the cities of Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti the penalties for marijuana are closely related to receiving a speeding ticket. I will be researching the legalization of marijuana in the United States. As I began to research this topic I realized just how uneducated many people are when it comes to marijuana. Cannabis, or marijuana, as it is more commonly referred…
What many people do not understand about marijuana is that it is a safe drug and not all drugs are bad drugs. “Marijuana is far less dangerous than alcohol or tobacco. Around 50,000 people die each year from alcohol poisoning. Similarly, more than 400,000 deaths each year are attributed to tobacco smoking. By comparison, marijuana is nontoxic and cannot cause death by overdose.” (NORML, 2015). Marijuana comes in third behind alcohol and tobacco as the most popular recreational drugs. There has never been a death due to marijuana due to the fact that is is nearly impossible to overdose and it is “nontoxic”. It is very confusing to many people as to why this drug is illegal when looking at how safe it is compared to things like alcohol and tobacco…
Each year the United States government documents drug related deaths in our country, breaking the deaths down into categories of cause. These categories include tobacco, alcohol, prescription medications, illegal drug, and of course marijuana related deaths. Every year the number of deaths coming from marijuana is equivalent to zero. So why is there even controversy over the issue of legalization? Obviously, there are still some people out there who believe the drug is a topic for concern in our nation. In recent years, there has been tremendous progress being made in the field of medicine. University hospitals around the country have been proving again and again that the drug poses no threat to human health and well being, even among patients who have used marijuana excessively. Recreational use of the drug marijuana will most likely continue until the end of humankind. Because of this, legalization of marijuana should be instated to prevent illegal trade of the drug and to shut down the black market. Many people are proposing the legal trade of marijuana in our country. To allow for this, some individuals argue to tax the sale of the drug just like alcohol and tobacco. State governments in the United States are beginning to push for legalization and the decriminalization of the drug. It is possible that after years of debate, many people are beginning to see the light and understand that marijuana poses no negative effects on the body, only positive effects when the drug is used safely for both recreational and medicinal purposes. These positive effects come in the form of treating many illnesses such as arthritis, simple aches and pains, nervosa, relief for chemotherapy patients, migraine headaches, asthma, glaucoma, epilepsy, and eating disorders. In my opinion, along with the MAJORITY of my youth, I think that Marijuana should be legalized and that we should ban all tobbaco products nationally. Why? Well not to state the obvious, but weed hasn’t killed anyone, Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, imposing a terrible toll in health, lives and dollars on families, businesses and government. Tobacco kills more than 400,000+ people annually – more than AIDS, alcohol, car accidents, illegal drugs, murders and suicides combined. Tobacco costs the U.S. more than $96 billion in health care expenditures and $97 billion in lost productivity each year. While the United States has made major progress against tobacco use, nearly one in five Americans still smokes, and more than 3,000 kids try their first cigarette each day. 0 people in recorded history have ever died of marijuana use alone. Lung diseases that arise from the inhaling of carcinogens created by the combustion of organic material may have caused some. But that is not because of marijuana alone. THC is one of the safest chemicals known to man. 70 people or so a year dies while high, but that doesn't mean that marijuana had any impact at all over why they died. Some people go to the emergency room because they are having a panic attack and the people they are with are too stupid to recognize this and took them to the emergency room. A panic attack is no need to go to the emergency room. There are plenty of things to do to calm them down. YOU CAN NOT OVERDOSE ON THC REALISTICALLY. IT IS THE SAFEST CHEMICAL KNOWN TO MAN. YOU WOULD HAVE TO SMOKE 5 POUNDS OF IT IN 50 MINUTES TO DIE. YOU ARE MORE LIKELY TO DIE…
