REFLECTIVE REVIEW – M3.10 INTRODUCTION TO LEADERSHIP

Leadership Styles

The factors that could influence my leadership style are:

• The type of situation • Individuals • Time • Importance • Pressure from Above • Organisational culture • Geographical area • My Attitude

Managerial influence from above could also influence my managerial style. If the organisational culture is one of autocracy I may well adopt the same stance to fit in with the organisational structure and vice versa if the organisation was more democratic my style would mirror that.

Reasons why leadership styles or behaviours are likely to have a positive effect on individual and group behaviour:

I think working over a large geographical area with satellite teams you would need to ensure that tasks are being completed on time and correctly. You would need to build a good, experienced working team who you could trust to get the job done. Being able to communicate your aims and objectives is paramount in a clear way. Also, knowing that your team understand the aims and objectives and they are happy to work to those is crucial. It would be difficult to be dictorial/autocratic in this situation where all of the decisions would have to come through me as this could prove time consuming unless we were in a situation that was time limited or warranted me making a decision there and then. If time wasn’t an issue and my organisational structure was one of empowering staff and wanting the staff to be involved in the decision making process I think a more democratic style could be used. If changes needed to be made or problems solved that involved the team then this style of leadership would be best. I don’t think you could be wholly laissez faire. You would still need to have a grasp on what was happening but decided on the level of delegation relevant to the team. The democratic style give you more lea way where you can become autocratic or

Thus, leaders feel that the best way to conduct their job is to practice different style whichever suits the best to the situation. thus a leader may use transactional leadership style, autocratic leadership style, laissez faire leadership style, participative leadership style, transformational leadership style etc. while practicing the style of autocratic leadership style, the leader would make all the decisions by himself, build strict guidelines which is to be followed by all the employees, having centralized power and authority etc. the leader using bureaucratic leadership style would have strict guidelines for everything while and would want all the activities to go as per the guidelines and may be lacking in flexibility and creativity in operations. A leader practicing charismatic style of leadership or transformational leadership style would be constantly offering inspiration and enthusiasm to its employees and gain high level of commitment from the employees towards the jobs and roles of the organization. A leader using participative style of leadership would be continuously engaging employees to discuss and participate in decision making in taking actions for long term and short term while using their suggestions to form the policies and in building the strategies of the future. A leader who…

The leadership style I use is a mixture of autocratic and democratic and is situational dependent. I feel it is an effective style due to the very nature of my work. If something has to be done quickly and without thought on my subordinates’ part, I tend to be very autocratic so they are able to focus on what actually needs to be done and not get caught up in trying to decide what the best course of action is. On the contrary, if there is time for decisions to be made, and, especially if the decision is one that will affect more than myself, I try and get input from everyone to get their thoughts. I think this is the best way to get people to buy-in to a process and take a bit of ownership with it.…

Effective leadership is contingent on matching a leader’s style to a setting that fits (Northouse, 2007). According to Fiedler’s Contingency Theory, leadership styles are operationalized primarily on two ends of a spectrum, they are characterized as task motivated, or relationship motivated (Northouse, 2007). I believe in the adage that practice makes perfect. In this paper, I will look into an alternative way for leaders to lead when they find themselves situated in an unfavorable situation. In the case of leadership; an administrator, manager, or supervisor should use a reflective mindful praxis to improve their ability to make decisions that will achieve optimal outcomes from the organizations they lead in all situations, especially unfavorable ones.…

Leadership, to me, is defined by the vision of the leader. It is strategic and comes from within. I feel leadership and management are not one in the same. A leader looks to instill values and to promote a vision. Their values are directed towards the team and the goal is to lead by example. A manager does need to possess at least some of the crucial leadership qualities; however, management can be learned whereas I don 't feel leadership can be taught.…

Even within organisation different styles of leadership can be identified with this being more prominent in larger organisations with a longer chain of command. One “study suggests that differences in the leadership styles practised by managers may be blurred in organisations with short chains of command, while it will tend to be pronounced in organisations with long chains of command, other things being equal.” (Oshagbemi T & Gill R, 2004)…

The leadership styles of the United States Presidents can make them effective or it can limit their effectiveness. The effectiveness of the President has direct effect on the American people. Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and John Kennedy were two leaders that had major influences in the mid-20th century. Both men played a key role in the United States involvement in Vietnam. The experiences, styles of leading, and characteristics of both President’s Dwight Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy intensified the level of involvement the United States had in the Vietnam experience. Even though the leadership styles may have differed, the two leaders refused to let communism spread (Moss, 2010).…

The Social Styles Model is the result of work of two American psychologists Roger Reid and John Merrill who conducted a research for a large insurance company aimed at finding out inter-linkages between various behavioral markers and leadership potential to let the company create a culture of highly effective management and successful leadership. And although the attempt to predict leadership potential through behavioral assessment was unsuccessful, the research resulted in an accidental discovery of something else.…
