Ms. J K Rowling was born in Chippling Sodury on July 31st 1965. Her childhood was generally happy, although she does remember getting teased because of her name, “Rowling”. She recalls often getting called Rowling Pin by her friends.
From an early age, Ms. J K Rowling had an ambition to be a writer. When she was 5-6 years old she wrote her first story, called Rabbit. When she was nine years old her family moved to Tutshil. Ms. J K Rowling attended a primary school in Tutshil, and later attended Wyedean comprehensive. In the school she get a good friend called Sean, who was he first person to give her the confidence that one day she would be able to make a writer.
Ms. J K Rowling describes herself as being shy, freckly, with no natural athletic ability but a great lover of literature.
It was in 1990 that she first conceived the idea about Harry Potter. It was also in December of 1990 that she lost her mother and for which she felt the loss deeply. When she was 26 years old she moved to Portugal to be an English teacher. There she met her first husband and together they had a child Jessica. After a couple of years their marriage ended in divorce and Ms. J K Rowling raised her daughter as a single parent. So she returned to England in 1994. She started to work full time to finish her first book. Eventually a small publisher Bollmbury agreed to take the book on. The editor also agreed to pay her a small advance of £ 1500. Within a few weeks of publication, (1996) the book sales really started to take off.
After the initial success of book in the UK, an American company Scholastic agreed to pay a remarkable £ 100,000 for the rights to publish in America with a new title Harry Potter and Sorcerer’s Stone. In 1998, Warner Bros. secured the film rights for the books. Ms. J K Rowling quickly wrote a sequel Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets.
