International Communications Final
1. Q - Define and discuss what is meant by shattered lens, prejudice, discrimination, and racism. Provide two examples of each. A - Prejudice is the prejudgment or assumption toward an individual or outgroup in a negative way based on limited knowledge or slim evidence. For example, If you’re prejudice you may think that all Jews are greedy and are rich. Another example would be that you think all Arabs are terrorists just because of the 9/11 bombings. Discrimination is the unfair treatment of an individual due to their race, age or sex. One example would be not letting a girl play a sport with men because she is a female and is seen as less dominant and not strong enough. Another example would be not letting someone join a club because they are seen as too old. Racism is the belief in cultural superiority of one race and inferiority of other races. One example of Racism was the Germans in the early 1900s when they were killing off Jews, blacks, gays, and others because they were seen as less superior and not of the Arian race. Another example of Racism was slavery. Africans were tortured, abused and worked to death just because of their skin color. Whites saw them as inferior to them and enslaved them.
2. Q - Define and provide one example each of bias intergroup filters, ethnocentrism, ethnorelative, and stereotypes. A – Ethnocentrism is the idea that our ingroup’s ideas and values are more important than ones from any other outgroup. One example as seen in the book is the Superbowl where the winner would be crowned as “World” champions, even though all the teams in the NFL are American. Ethnorelative however is the understanding of communicational behavior from the other persons frame or reference. You are accepting of the differences and adapt to them. An example of this would be if you had a Muslim friend who prays 5 times a day. While some think that as a bit excessive, if you understand it and the reason why, you are ethnorelative.

Discrimination is different from prejudice and stereotyping by how being prejudice and stereotyping are negative feelings or thoughts towards a different race. When you discriminate you are acting on those negative feelings or thoughts. If you do not like someone because of the racial or ethnic minority group then you are being prejudice but if you deny them opportunities because of those reasons then you are discriminating. If you think that all people in a certain racial or ethnic group are lazy then that is stereotyping but if you deny them a job just on those facts without letting that person prove to you that he or she is not then that is discriminating.…

Racial and Ethics Group 13th Edition by Richard T. Schafer defines discrimination as the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons. Discrimination is different from prejudice and stereotyping because discrimination is the act of excluding a group from some right, privilege, or service which is based upon some form of prejudice or stereotyping. Stereotyping is a generalization of a group of people from a certain race which is usually negative and a prejudice is a first impression of a person which is usually based off a stereotype. Discrimination is actual positive or negative actions towards a person or group based solely on their differences. An example would be an employer not hiring Hispanics because he does not like them.…
