Why do I love this country?

I love stepping out of the house, ready to spoil myself with smiles as I sweep through the streets. I love this pill of contagiousness that I know will keep me invigorated throughout the day. I love how Filipinos, in spite of having 171 native languages, once see the typical curve in a fellow’s expression, understand the messages it spirits through – optimism and resiliency. I love how it brightens up my day.

I love how the sun shines so vivid that I embrace the warmth this country emblazons. I love living in the Philippines having 7,107 islands, bountiful in majestic beaches and breathtaking sceneries. I love scrolling through my newsfeed, seeing my friends taking a dip at El Nido and Samal while I’m enjoying my buko pie breakfast at the Ruins in Negros. I love how foreigners deliberately visit our country year after year just to experience the coziness they can get from every corner of the Philippines, from antique houses and historical landmarks to water sports camps and white sand beaches. I love how my complexion had become after spending a day off at LaBoracay and I love how my Canadian friends compliment that I look even more tanned…exotic.

I love having this identity. I love possessing these qualities - kayumanggi, pango, pandak, because these make me perfect, these make me a Filipino. I love how our natural beauty has become an avenue for us to conquer the world. I love how our recent Binibinis represent our country in the Miss Universe, not to mention being at the top 5 for four consecutive years. I love how our kababayans unite to support these beautiful young ladies and how we all connive to make sure that our representatives make it to the final cut. I love how this motivates us to continue to applaud those who have what it takes to stand up there in the stage or to a disparate extent, in a boxing ring, waving the flag that bears all abiding hopes, witnessed by 196
