I Love This Country
I Love This Country
By John N. Panes

Why do I love this country?

I love stepping out of the house, ready to spoil myself with smiles as I sweep through the streets. I love this pill of contagiousness that I know will keep me invigorated throughout the day. I love how Filipinos, in spite of having 171 native languages, once see the typical curve in a fellow’s expression, understand the messages it spirits through – optimism and resiliency. I love how it brightens up my day.

I love how the sun shines so vivid that I embrace the warmth this country emblazons. I love living in the Philippines having 7,107 islands, bountiful in majestic beaches and breathtaking sceneries. I love scrolling through my newsfeed, seeing my friends taking a dip at El Nido and Samal while I’m enjoying my buko pie breakfast at the Ruins in Negros. I love how foreigners deliberately visit our country year after year just to experience the coziness they can get from every corner of the Philippines, from antique houses and historical landmarks to water sports camps and white sand beaches. I love how my complexion had become after spending a day off at LaBoracay and I love how my Canadian friends compliment that I look even more tanned…exotic.

I love having this identity. I love possessing these qualities - kayumanggi, pango, pandak, because these make me perfect, these make me a Filipino. I love how our natural beauty has become an avenue for us to conquer the world. I love how our recent Binibinis represent our country in the Miss Universe, not to mention being at the top 5 for four consecutive years. I love how our kababayans unite to support these beautiful young ladies and how we all connive to make sure that our representatives make it to the final cut. I love how this motivates us to continue to applaud those who have what it takes to stand up there in the stage or to a disparate extent, in a boxing ring, waving the flag that bears all abiding hopes, witnessed by 196

Throughout our lives we communicate to a vast array of people on a daily basis from teachers to friends to family. Each time we speak to these individuals there tends to be a different “slang” that is used with each yet at the same time still portraying the same message. In groups of different cultures they have a similar voice through language. Even though the languages they speak are different the meanings can be the same. Through this everyone has the ability to show love, anger, sadness, and the ability to teach right from wrong. Two authors from different ethnic backgrounds show how language affects them personally and the ones around them. Kingston, a Chinese author, writes about stories based on the things she heard from her mother and…

From having to assimilate to a new culture, my family left many of our loved ones behind and this fact would resonate strongly years later. In response, my parents saved money to allow my family to visit the Philippines every four years. From my growth from childhood to adolescence, making my trip back to the Philippines taught me a lesson every visit. From being unable to be with family in the Philippines as they suffered from illness to seeing the poverty-stricken life of the people in Pampanga, I have developed a deep appreciation of the opportunities I have been…

Filipinos are known to be light people. We don’t usually wear much burden on our shoulders. Well, we have a lot but how do we cope with every situation? By not taking it so hard, of course! In every problem, like poverty, even if they don’t get to eat much for the day, they are still smiling and laughing together and the family is still intact. Like in the story, the narrator’s family is a poor family, and yet, because they are not so sensitive, they get to play outside and laugh. In the rich family’s case, they are abundant in food and a comfortable lifestyle but are still not content with what they have and push others-like the poor family- to pay for it. In the real world, rich people tend to step down on the poor because they…

Amidst all the negative things hurled to us, Filipinos, by peoples from various and distant lands (or even by our own blood-brothers), it will never be denied that we have good characteristics that we can be proud of. We even have attitudes that we are the only ones who have. These good things about us are those that compensate for the almost indelible negative things that we have. And majority of them are obviously the product of being imprisoned for more than three hundred years in the convent and almost fifty years of being lost in Hollywood.…

With the use of Filipino language in the exchange of thoughts, we could establish or map the dominant image of youth culture in our country. It is said that language is used to think as well as to speak. An individual’s language is influenced by his thoughts (E. M. Rogers, T. M. Steinfatt, 1998). Language, being the mirror of society and a reflection of culture, can help us understand the underlying trends and…

“Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!”, after watching Jose Rizal the Movie, these are the words that wanted to find its way out into my mouth. Words that wanted to travel beyond distance and beyond boundaries that would defy ages to finally find a resonating voice that sent earthquake to the stoned floor of the holy temple of God that sheltered fiends who clothed themselves in white and who spoke His words with fluency but undoubtedly knew nothing of His language. I could not say it better, as a realization hit me, but I admire my Motherland. I could not help but think how did she, after everything that was done to her, have found it in her heart to forgive?…

A Filipino may denationalize himself but not his stomach. He may travel over the seven seas, the five continents, the two hemispheres and lose the savor of home, forget his identity and believes himself a citizen of the world. But he remains- gastronomically, at least, always a Filipino. For, if in no other way, the Filipino loves his country with his stomach.…
