Zarit Escalante Professor Duran English 1 A March 15, 2013 The Art of Persuasion Martin Luther King, Jr. “ I Have a Dream” Speech In in his landmark speech in Washington D.C., Dr. Martin Luther King begins by alluding to Abraham Lincoln whose imposing memorial stands behind him. He refers to the Emancipation Proclamation, the document Lincoln used to set free the enslaved Negros of his time. King’s speech is a call for Negros who have been free for “five score years” to be treated equally to their fellow white Americans. King uses metaphor, parallel structure and allusion to convince his audience that it is time for Lincoln’s intentions to become reality. King begins by using a metaphor comparing the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence to a check given to given to all Americans promising to pay them with life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Those Americans were supposed to include black men and women. But King declares that the United States has not paid its due on that check. He states that it has come back with “insufficient funds.” King refers to a bad check to make his point clear because he knows his audience is probably familiar with the situation of receiving a rubber check. He goes on to mention the “bank of justice” which should supply equality to all Americans, but is bankrupt when dealing with African Americans. Later he compares the mood of black people to the weather. He states that blacks are, “Sweltering in a summer of discontent. They will not be satis-

fied until an autumn of freedom of equality arrives.” He uses the weather metaphor to show that Blacks could become violent. Knowing that a black man could not directly threaten the establishment of white society, King uses the metaphor to explain the growing hostility of his people. Through parallel structure, he goes on to declare that blacks cannot wait for equality. He speaks against the “tranquilizing drug or gradualism.” He then starts the next four sentences with “Now

    In Kings 'I have a dream' speech, because of his diverse audience, he sends out somewhat of a mixed tone. He firmly rebukes those who would treat others unfairly while encouraging and uplifting those who would stand for justice. His speech is strewn with detailed metaphors such as his 'bank of justice', 'vaults of opportunity' and 'bad check' which prove in no uncertain terms that the 'Negro' population has been cheated; the 'manacles of segregation' and the 'chains of discrimination' make obvious his disdain for inequality.     King initially draws connections from the current state of African American peoples by referencing allusions to historical documents which assisted in the advances against oppression. In his speech, King begins with a nod to Abraham Lincoln, using “Five score years ago” as his opening statement. He then praises Lincoln, claiming that he was a “symbolic shadow in which we [the people] stand today” and mentions his effort toward the ending of slavery, the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. However, the signing of the document was only a literal end to slavery, but in reality, African Americans were still enslaved by society.     While touching on various destructive affairs occurring at that time, King used many different modes of rhetoric in order to capture and entice the listener. King’s structure of the speech is appeals to everyone who is involved in the present situation: the blacks affected by the situation, the whites who consider racial action and thought normal, and those who thought blacks to be evil and deemed the whole civil rights movement unnecessary. By doing so, King demonstrates a harsh, but true, reality on who is really to blame for this multitude of injustice. Through use of ethos, logos, and pathos, King also brilliantly appeals to listeners. Through ethos, King places the white man as a tyrant, making whites feel to blame through broken promises of freedom and equality for all, stated in the Constitution of the United States of America. Through logos, King refers to Lincoln, one of the most admired men of in United States history, as being a primary advocate of African American freedom, as it was his decision to free the slaves. As for pathos, King proclaims that the blacks are imprisoned by actual racism in itself and that the white people are to blame. King also alludes to Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address”, and the Bible, reminding the reader that racism is also wrong in the eyes of God.     “I Have a Dream” Argument 9/17/2008 Martin Luther King Jr. delivered one of the most powerful, and riveting speeches of all time, on August 28, 1963, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. The speech was titled, “I Have a Dream” and King was later awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for his influential words. The speech is very organized and well researched, which makes it a very effective argumentative piece of writing. It has been described as “Sermon-like” due to his writing style, as King was a Baptist Minister. The speech is organized into two parts, which helps the reader (or listener, depending on if you’re reading the speech, or listening to the recording) retain the information and important parts that he wishes to get across to his audience. In the first part of the speech, King is reminding all Americans of all the racial injustice that is going on in our country. The language in the metaphors that King used in the first half of the writing are the most effective words I have ever read that instill the need for action, and also of the horrific conditions in which Negros have been forced to live. King writes, “…Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of witheringinjustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity.” And then went on to write, “America has given the Negro people a bad check; a check which has come back marked “_insufficient funds_.” By using this type of language, King could reach out and urge action to anyone that listened. The second half of the speech is focused on painting the picture of racial integration and equality. The most famous paragraph of the entire speech lies in the second half of the writing.
