“I Go Back to May 1937”
Write 2 paragraphs on ONE of the Sharon Olds poems handed out in class (either 'I Go Back to May 1937' or '35/10')

- One paragraph on imagery in the poem
- One paragraph on a literary element of your choice (metaphors, similes, etc.) “I Go Back to May 1937” is a wonderfully crafted poem by Sharon Olds. This poem has more meaning than you give it, for the imagery and foreshadowing it is filled with. This poem tells you a story of how the narrator’s father and mother met and how their life expanded from there."I see my father strolling out / under the ochre sandstone arch, the / red tiles glinting like bent/plates of blood behind his head" (2-5) feels like it’s such a wonderful day. New young people are graduating into the real world and everyone’s proud of them. Yet, reading closely shows you that the red tiles are bent “like plates of blood” is not just a color description. There is something so mysterious and foreboding behind him on such beautiful a graduation day. The ominous scene appears again at “I/ see my mother with a few light books at her hip/ standing at the pillar made of tiny bricks/ the wrought iron gate still open behind her, its/ sword-tips aglow in the May air” (5-9) This time, the author puts in “sword-tips aglow in the May air”. Is it because the gate shall close on her life again and she will never be able to receive the happiness she should have gotten? The sharp knife finally cuts and twists into you when the narrator says, “You are going to suffer in ways you have not heard of/You are going to want to die” (18-19). After this one graduation day, everything breaks into pieces. The narrator is still worrying years later, even when he/she is finally an adult. The poem sends great images of how everything happened. Every word is carefully crafted so it fits and gives you the story the poet wishes to give you. The first two lines already give you an image of a young man leaving his college, strolling through this arch into his life,

Sharon Olds’ poem “I Go Back to May 1937” is written as if the speaker; which appears to be female is looking back in time to when he or she’s parents first met and married. The speaker throughout the poem does not seem pleased with the events that unfolded thereafter, but nonetheless understands that there is nothing that she could have done to stop it from happening. The poem gives a short glimpse into the life the couple had and the effect it had on the child/narrator. The poem is almost a flashback, but instead of first person point of view, it is told from the perception of the child’s viewpoint, which seems predominately that of despair and hopelessness.…

The poem begins with the narrator telling herself, “A few more steps, old feet.” (line 1). The old feet she refers to are the ancestor’s feet, that appear to be old and worn out from the rigorous journey they take. The speaker then goes on to say, “In pale tea I’ll see / me with her, tasting wild grapes” (lines 4-5). This shows her reminder of her ancestors in nature. The pale tea is the symbol of the clean, clear simplicity of nature and when the speaker simplifies herself, to the bare nothingness of nature it reveals to her, her ancestors. Then in the following lines, “at dawn, tasting dew / on tender leaves, another year.” (lines 6-7). The dawn represents a new day, a new start where she can again acknowledge her heritage. After, the speaker says, “her hands still guiding me, / at sunset grinding seeds” (lines 11-12). These hands guiding the speaker, are her ancestors leading her through their stories and nature around…

This poem starts off in a mellow way: “...his parents boarded him at school in town, slaving to free him from the stony fields”. The main character, Warren Pryor, is graduating and on his way to a flourishing life as a result of his parents many sacrifices. By the last stanza, the innocent tone turns into a belligerent voice: “...his axe-hewn hands upon the paper bills aching with empty strength and throttled rage.” This ultimately expresses Pryor’s point of view. Though he achieves the first steps of the American Dream and completes his parent’s wishes, he is ungratified, ironically. Instead, Pryor prefers to be at the farm he grew up in and working alongside his parents. This shows how the American Dream does not suit everyone, especially Pryor, but he continues on the path of working for the American Dream in fear of disheartening his…

In the mist of Early Autumn everything surrounding you slowly starts to take on a new transition. The environment with itself, begins to take you back to a place where u remember fonder times and brighter sky’s. Langston Hughes states, “Under the trees in Washington Square, she found herself desperately reaching back into the past.” Mary had begun to think about her younger self as she reflected on the memories she and Bill once shared. She knew that her looks had withered away and she had begun to look ancient. Mary clearly realized that she was not the same young vibrant looking woman that she once was years ago in Ohio. At that moment it slowly sank in that she had reached her peak. As her old age slowly wrapped around Mary’s face gripping…

Syntax/Structure- In order to emphasize the labored existence of his father, the author repeatedly uses the “c” sound, which kind of adds the element of pain. Examples of this alliteration include, cracked, banked, thanked, and chronic. The overall structure of the poem also attributes to the underlying tone. It is constructed very simply which may help to express the simplicity of the love between a father and son. They did not lead an extravagant lifestyle and his father didn’t do go out of his way in order to show affection towards his son, but the point was he did what needed to be done even if it was hard, without calling for any appreciation and that was enough to show his love for his family. The poem also ends with a rhetorical question, “What did I know, what did I know of love’s austere and lonely offices? which helps to show the regret and change in heart the man has had through…

The year is 1943. Situated in my little corner, I lie in wait, wondering if I will ever be cherished again. Times of long ago come to my mind, when every day, Michelle would come and sit at her little desk and type away. Such blissful times they were, when she would stride through that creaky, rustic door with a grin so cheerful, that it would light the whole room. Pulling back the chair, she would sit down and write optimistic tales. She would compose stories of princes and princesses and happily ever afters. Stories of daddies coming home from the war and being reunited with their families.…

In the forth and fifth line of the third stanza the speaker says "Yet knowing how way, leads on to way I doubted if I should ever come back". This line verbalizes a sense of nostalgia that the speaker has, as well as a sense of determination not to look back at the same time; this is quite interesting and could only be the result of meticulously chosen words.…

The passing of time in a person's life is filled with many different stages. The poem "Piano" by D.H. Lawrence is a complicated example of how a poet might think. The speaker in "Piano" is proud to be a full grown man, yet he loves remembering his happy childhood; his nostalgic attitude causes him to feel guilty as if he had betrayed his present state of being. Through effective imagery, Lawrence is able (to describe an image) to help the reader understand the speaker's nostalgic attitude. The diction and tone used in this poem reveal the speaker's struggle as his feelings mix between his desire to be a man and his desire to return to his childhood. The rhyme and structure of the poem keep the reader in tune with the flow of the poem. In this poem a man struggles to remain a man while fighting off his memories of the past, which he feels would be uncharacteristic of his present maturity.…
