Summer Surprise

Summer Surprise

By Rebecca White

“Well do you or don’t you?” asked Sally. “Do I or don’t I what?” asked Angelica quickly, annoyed. “Do you or don’t you believe in the tooth fairy?” “Of course I don’t!” Angelica snapped back, quickly. “That’s kid’s stuff.” “No it’s not. I’ve seen the tooth fairy with my own two eyes.” “Yeah, right,” said Angelica. The two girls were sitting on Sally’s front porch, the hot summer sun making them sweat. Sally’s mother had offered them lemonade, but what they really wanted was popsicles. “You don’t believe me?” asked Sally. “I’ll show you!” Sally jumped up and started running out into the front lawn. “Wait!” said Angelica. “Don’t go too far, girls!” shouted Sally’s mother through the open kitchen window. “We won’t!” said Sally and Angelica in unison. Angelica could barely keep up, Sally was running really fast. Where could she possibly be taking me? wondered Angelica. Sally was half skipping, half running around the large, white two‐story house to the backyard. Her ponytail swayed this way and that, and Angelica wished that her hair was just as long. As it was now, Angelica’s hair barely reached below her ears, and she couldn’t put it up at all anymore because she’d just gotten a haircut. “Hey, where are we going!?” asked Angelica, running out of breath. “Right over here!” said Sally, who stopped suddenly in the middle of a patch of dandelions. “Look at this!” © 2013 ReadWorks®, Inc. Angelica knelt down as Sally had, and peered into the grass and flowers. “What are we looking at?” Angelica asked, almost frightened. “See those white things?” said Sally, pointing into the dirt. “No, I don’t see anything,” Angelica said. She remembered when she was much younger, one of her teeth felt loose. She started playing with the tooth with her

I disagree with Leon Botstein's essay "Let Teenagers Try Adulthood". Botstein argues that teenagers have matured much more quickly over the past few years. Therefore, he believes high school be abolished and a child's education should begin earlier in order for students to graduate around the age of sixteen rather than eighteen. High school is intended for students of a certain maturity level. But now, students are exceeding that level rapidly. Botstein sees high school as a place full of superficial, adolescent teenagers that care more about appearances, popularity, cliques and sports than education. Because they have reached a high maturity level at such a young age already, there are many students that are wasting their junior and senior years away in high school rather than starting college. I disagree with Botstein however. High school is a transition period for students to learn how to take on more responsibilities. It is the time for teenagers to become more social and independent. While I do agree with Botstein on his point of maturity levels growing faster, I don't agree that students should be graduating earlier than they currently are. Not all students are capable of the same things. Most high school students are not prepared to enter into adulthood just yet. They still need someone to guide them along a path until they've graduated. Age restrictions are applied to the youth community for a reason. The majority of teenagers are not ready to handle the responsibilities that come their way. The legal age for drinking is 21 because of safety concerns as well as the responsibility that comes with the consumption of alcohol. Fortunately for Texas, teenagers are able to obtain their drivers license at the age of sixteen, but other states, like California, have citizens wait until they are eighteen to obtain their license with the same privileges as a sixteen year old from Texas. Responsibilities are tough to handle, even for an adult. So why have the same…

She enters the house to freshen up before going out to dinner with Henry. She puts on her finest outfit, "which was the symbol of her prettiness". This also, is a symbol of her femininity. Henry sees her and is stunned by her beauty and femininity. He says, "You look so nice!" She tenses up and asks for what he means by it, his definition of nice. He goes on to say, "I don't know. I mean you look different, strong and happy." She is eyes widely interested in this and asks "What do you mean 'strong'?". He is taken aback by her response. Henry was just trying to compliment her and she still would not allow him to enter her heart, almost as if he has offended her with his praise. As they continue their way to dinner, Elisa discovers something quite tragic to her. She sees her treasured chrysanthemums discarded on the side of the road as if a pile of unimportant garbage. She is distraught at the sight of them lying there mercilessly. She is brought to tears as she realizes that they surely mean nothing- symbolic to her self-worth. The repairman had only saved the pot, which was of far more value to him. The poor flowers are left to wilt and die, unable to survive on the side of the road. Sadly, that is such the case of her identity. She pulls up her coat collar to hide her tears, in which she cries; handling the situation with the weakness of a woman, rather than the strength of a male. Her strength has no match now. She will always be a female at the root no matter how strong it appears…

Suny Empire offers multiple study options such as studying with a mentor, as well as convenient online study. Suny Empire offers much more affordable education rates than many other colleges out there. I’d like to continue my education through Suny Empire to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Community and Human Services. I believe this field of study is ideal for me as I have prior Human Services experience.
