MGMT5665 Project Management HMS Pinafore
Project software case 30% 18 April 5:00pm on LMS

Your task is to construct a network diagram for this project, identify the critical path and address a number of managerial issues. Given the case presentation, you will extract a work breakdown structure and an activity list. Enter your project data on to MS Project. Save the project baseline. This represents the half the assignment grade because it evaluates your use of the project management software. You will find that there is a difficulty in meeting the opening night schedule (if you follow the text exactly). Your task is to solve the scheduling problem by considering the impact on the quality of the performance as well as the additional stress on the participants. Implement your scheduling solution by saving a second baseline. Deliverable: Write a short report (6-10 pages) which extracts the key data from the schedules created in MS Project. Complete your MS project files – one for the case description and one for the solution to the scheduling problem. The outline of the report is as follows (20 points): • Description • A brief description of the Pinafore project task • A brief description of the main task areas (i.e. upper level of the WBS) • The logic behind the schedule (give reasons for predecessor and successor relationship; what are the key schedule constraints) • Original Solution • Statement of the original schedule: i. Your Gantt chart ii. Your entry table including the task name, Duration, start, finish, predecessor, successor, Resource and cost (see below) iii. Comment on the scheduling problem • Your Solution on a new project file • Statement of the final schedule: i. Your Gantt chart ii. Your entry table including the task name, Duration, start, finish, predecessor, successor, Resource and cost (see below) • Justify your solution: clearly identify the impact on project risk, quality, cost and human resources Deliverable: 2 MS Project Files: points

Project indirect cost represents overhead cost. Indirect cost varies directly in time. For instance, if our daily overhead cost is 250 euro, any reduction in project duration has to represent a saving of 250 euro per day. Project direct cost is clearly charged to a specific work package such as labor, materials and equipments. In order to create a cost-duration graph we have to apply three major steps:…

Chapter 3 of Systems Analysis and Design in a Changing World explains the techniques and steps required to build a project schedule using the Gantt chart view in MS Project. This appendix provides a similar explanation of how to build a project schedule, but it is based on using a PERT/CPM chart or diagram for the schedule format. A Gantt chart and a PERT/CPM chart both provide essentially the same information about project activities and tasks. Each chart has unique strengths and weaknesses. As you learned in Chapter 3, a Gantt chart is a type of bar chart that is superimposed on a calendar. The primary strength of a Gantt chart is that the bars show the duration and project progress as compared to the days and weeks of the calendar. The calendar comparison provides an effective visual representation of the project timeline and helps you track project progress, because the Gantt chart shows what should have been accomplished by a specific date and what has actually been completed on that date. Chapter 3 illustrates an example of the tracking view of a Gantt chart. A PERT/CPM chart, as you will learn in this appendix, is a network type of diagram with boxes that represent the tasks or activities of the project, and with connecting arrows that represent the sequence and dependencies between tasks. The strength of a PERT/CPM chart is that, as a network, it provides a visual representation of the relationships between tasks of a project. During the development of the project schedule, and especially while trying to determine task dependencies, a PERT/CPM chart is an effective tool. PERT, which stands for Project Evaluation and Review Technique, was first developed in the 1950s and was used by the United States Department of Defense to organize, monitor, and control very large, complex defense projects. CPM, which stands for Critical Path Method, was developed independently, also in the…
