Understanding the impact that those designers have had on the form and function of everyday products
Products we buy today have been influenced by famous designers. We gain inspiration by looking at their work, finding out about their lives and finding out what inspired them.
Philippe Starck – As a child he enjoyed taking things apart and then rebuilding them. From this he began to bring us products that are easier, smarter, fun and original. He has influenced the design of furniture, vehicles, buildings, clothing, luggage and kitchen equipment.
Charles Rennie Mackintosh – brought up in a time of need for mass-produced items. His influences came from Asian and modern designs. His influences can be seen in interior design, furniture and jewellery.
Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto – Was an architect. His style is modern using natural materials, warm colours and undulating lines. Influences are in architecture, furniture, glassware and paintings.
Activity: Charles Rennie Mackintosh (7 June 1868 – 10 December 1928) was a Scottish architect, designer, water colourist and artist. He was a designer in the post impressionist movement and also the main representative of Art Nouveau in the United Kingdom. He had considerable influence on European design. He was born in Glasgow and he died in London.
