As a teacher or trainer, there are a variety of roles and responsibilities that are important to consider. The main role of a teacher is to create a relaxed, comfortable learning environment for students to meet their learning needs. In many cases, the teacher’s role also involves delivery of specific content as defined by a curriculum, in order to prepare students for passing examination. As such one of the main responsibilities of the teacher is to be aware of any curriculum and examination requirements of a course. Another role of the teacher is to ensure that the lesson is inclusive of all learners and they are therefore responsible for recognising diversity within the group. This may include disabilities; language barriers and cultural differences. These roles and responsibilities would fall under the ‘identification of learners needs’ aspect of the teaching and learning cycle. This is a continual process and would necessarily be affected by other aspects of the cycle, particularly assessment and evaluation of the learning and teaching. This evaluation will constantly inform the teacher and will include such varied mediums as end of course evaluation sheets as well as simple observation of candidates demonstrating their knowledge and/or skills. It may be appropriate for candidates to meet certain assessment criteria or competencies throughout a course as part of this evaluation process. A frequent problem encountered in my industry (security and conflict management) is that learners are reluctant to disclose any needs which they may have, such as a lack of basic numeracy or literacy skills and as such I must constantly observe and adapt my delivery so as to include all learners and allow them to feel comfortable, without the perceived ‘stigma’ of disclosing any issues. Another area of which one must be constantly aware is that of catering for other needs such as disability, access or audio/visual aids as on the whole I would say that I train able bodied persons but would need to be aware of other’s needs.…

Equality is ensuring individuals or groups of individuals are treated fairly and equally and no less favourably than others. Equality is about the rights of the learners to attend and participate regardless of age, sex, race, gender reassignment, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation, marriage/civil partnership and pregnancy /maternity. Diversity is about recognising and being tolerant of different views which individual people have, in terms of cultural backgrounds and different lifestyle choices relating to any characteristics they may have. A diverse society is what we have as every individual has a different culture, belief and life experience to the next. Inclusion is about including all the learners in ‘relevant activities rather than excluding them for any reason either directly or indirectly’ (Gravells 2008). ‘Every learner has the right to expect that they will receive high quality learning appropriate to their needs and circumstances ion a safe and healthy environment.’ (Success for all: DfES 2002). Inclusive teaching and learning is possible when promoted. In order to achieve this I combine both the training cycle and the learning styles from Kolb and Fry. These include using Concrete experience, Abstract Conceptualisation, Active Experimentation and Observation and Reflection. Learners the mixing up of which produces the learning styles that best suits a learner, ie; Converger, Diverger, Assimilator and Accommodator. By ensuring the lessons accommodate all learning styles all learners will feel inclusion. Along with the learning styles I would include relevant resource materials . If a learner requires more intervention then I may need to include the following; additional classroom support, adapted or specific resources, peer support, varied presentation, content selection, reducing or increasing time for activities Along with my…

When I do my initial assessment I will understand my learners needs, this will help me with my inclusion of learners, so I am planning and preparing my lessons with all my learners in my mind. Taking into consideration that some learners are visual, audio and some are kinaesthetic. By doing these you will keep all your learners engaged and allow all your learners to participate in the lesson Wilson, L (2009:153) states “it is about creating interesting, varies and inspiring learning opportunities for all learners, ensuring all learners contribute and are never disadvantaged by methods, language or resources”.…

Always acting professionally and helping students reach their full potential is my responsibility as a teacher at all times. I need to have skills to effectively plan and deliver inclusive learning, promoting equality and diversity. This can be done by using different teaching methods such as group discussions, demonstrations or asking questions. I need to be able to identify the learners needs by doing an initial assessment which in turn will help me identify the needs of the learners and advise them of the appropriate support available. This could be referring them for study skill support, or help with exam support etc.…
