Analysis

The crude product (aspirin) was purified in the last lab, using recrystallization, in which we dissolved the crude product with hot ethanol. We then added 25 mL of water until the product reformed (the solution became cloudy white) and redissolved the solid with hot ethanol. The solution was allowed to cool for a week, and crystals of purified solid were formed. In order to analyze this purified product, we determined the melting point by placing a small sample of the aspirin in a capillary tube in the melting point apparatus. A range was found, and compared to the literary range which is between 135 and 135.5 degrees Celcius for a pure substance. We also performed three trials of titrations, in which we titrated the product with NaOH. The NaOH only reacts with the acid proton on the aspirin and allows us to determine the moles of acid in the sample, provided that the aspirin is not contaminated. The amount of purified aspirin that was formed after recrystallization was 2. 1635 g and the melting range for my sample of aspirin was 125.1 to 131.3 degrees Celcius (melting point).

Conclusion

After the product recrystallized and was drained of solution and impurities, there was 2.2635 g of aspirin. The percent recrystallized yield was 55 percent. Three titrations were performed in which .1021g, .1102 g, and .1091 g of aspirin were used and the end point volumes were 2.80 mL, 3.00 mL, and 2.90 mL, respectively. The melting point range of my sample of aspirin was 125.1 degrees Celcius to 131.3 degrees Celcius (melting point). The literature value of the melting point is 135 to 135.5 degrees Celcius. My melting point is lower than the literature value which is caused by the presence of a small amount of impurities; also my melting point range is larger than the literature range, which is due to impurities remaining in my product.     The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the composition of a simulated pharmaceutical preparation Panacetin, a proposed type of pain-killer. Panacetin is typically made up of sucrose, aspirin, and acetaminophen, but the third component in this experiment is unknown. The unknown component is suspected to be a chemical relative of acetaminophen, either acetanilide or phenacetin. Using techniques such as extraction, evaporation, and filtration, the three components will be isolated based on their solubilities and acid-base properties. The percent composition of Panacetin will also be deduced based on the masses of the three dried components; this is done to verify the composition attained is consistent with those listed on the preparations label. As a result of this investigation, my teammates and I allowed the Panacetin to undergo gravity filtration and separation techniques in order to identify whether there are any discrepancies in the components of the Panacetin. Furthermore, recrystallization and purification methods were used to determine if the unknown substance were similar in properties to either of the suspected unknown substances by comparing factors such as melting points to the chemical properties of phenactin and acetanilide. The results were as expected, based on the molecular weights and ratios of each separated chemicals, as well as the boiling point of the unknown it was determined that these ranges were close enough to indicate that the label is reasonably accurate in its composition. To add on however the identity of the unknown component differed from what the label indicated. In the end, the percentage composition attained based on our observations and yield confirmed that indeed the chemical composition of Panacetin were as indicated on the preparations label.     After first isolation of crude acetaminophen, 1.22g of light, brown shiny, fine Crestline solid emulated, which demonstrated slight less than 0.030g of product was lost from original 0.150g of p-aminophenol. The melting point range of crude acetaminophen ranged from 166.8-167.6°C, when compare to the known melting point of pure acetaminophen which ranged from 169.5-171°C, is slightly depressed. After decolonization of crude acetaminophen 0.060g of a very light tan/pink almost white, fine, shiny crystalline purified acetaminophen was recovered. Significant amount was lost; slightly over half was lost from 0.122g crude acetaminophen. Purified acetaminophen resulted in a much lighter coloration than the crude acetaminophen. Purified acetaminophen was slightly light tan/pink nearly white, whereas crude acetaminophen was light brown. After crystallization of acetaminophen, 0.028g of whiter, shiny, fine crystals resulted with no apparent odor.
