A & P and Greasy Lake An epiphany is when a character comes to realization of discovery in his or life based on what was seen or experienced. Usually, an epiphany is made at the end of a story. In “A & P,” the epiphany for the story is when the main character, Sammy realizes that it there is going to be hardships in life after he quits his job. He realizes this because as he looks at his previous boss, Sammy notices that he could not quit as fast as he did. He took up for the girls that were being insulted, but did he need to quit his job in defense for the girls that would pay him no mind? In “Greasy Lake,” the speaker wanted the reader think he was a “bad” kid, but was he as bad as he thought? He drank a weak wine, grape juice and gin, and drove his parent’s station wagon. The epiphany made at the end of the story was that the speaker and his friends were not as bad as he thought they were. To be frankly honest, they really did not know what bad was from the start. These two stories are very similar when learning life experiences, and letting the character know who they are as people. In “A & P,” Sammy is this non-wealthy, normal guy who works in a grocery store. During this time, in 1961 there was a change occurring that involved ethics and morality. Also, money was something that became a luxury, and it became something you had to have in order to be approved in society when it came to different classes: upper-middle class and high class. One day when Sammy was working, a set of girls came into the store dressed in bikinis. One of the girls had her nose turned up, and that gave an automatic reaction to those around her as to how her attitude was. After being in the store for a while, the girls start to get harassed because of how they were dressed. Sammy did not like it that much because he thought the girls deserved a lot more respect than what they were receiving. The more aggravated he got, the more he

According to the dictionary, setting is defined as “the surroundings and environment of anything,” or “ the locale or period in which the action of a novel, play, film, and etc.”. When writers begin writing their story, they must think about where and when the story will take place. It is important because the setting creates the mood and the world of the story. Although the stories “A&P” by John Updike and “The Greasy Lake” by T.C. Boyle are completely different when it comes to the setting, both of their settings are almost as important as the actual story itself.…

Sammy is working at the check-out of the A&P when three girls, obviously from the wealthy side of the city come in. They are wearing nothing but their bathing suits and are making a spectacle of themselves as they saunter through the aisles, clearly aware that their presence is creating a stir. From the time the girls enter the grocery store, to the moment they leave, you can see changes in Sammy. At first, he sees only the physicality of the girls: how they look and what they are wearing, seem to be his only observations. As the story progresses, he notices the interactions between the girls, and he even determines the hierarchy of the small dynamic. He observes their actions and how they affect the other patrons of the business. Rather, how the other people view the girl's actions. His thought process is maturing and he starts to see things as an adult might see them. He notices that the "regulars", seem to do the same things day in and day out. Following the same path and directions through the isles, they check off their lists and go about their searching. This realization is why the group of girls is so refreshing to him. They are different and do not seem to follow any set path. They seem to live in the now. After seeing this, he starts to feel bad about the way the girls are being viewed by others. He no longer wants to be part of something that discourages uniqueness. This is further supported in the checkout scene, when he makes the comment about the policy and how it is what the "kingpins" want. It is…

In John Updike’s “A&P” we meet Sammy, a nineteen year old opinionated, sarcastic teenager whose youthful ignorance and superiority complex becomes shattered by the arrival of the three girls who come into the A&P to shop. His desire to be one of them, accepted by them, leads him to quit his job. The irony of Sammy’s sense of superiority is that he realizes in the eyes of the girls he is just like the sheep that shop in the store. His desire to set himself apart and prove he is different is what causes him to quit his job. Sammy quit his job not on a matter of ideals, but rather as a means of showing off and trying to impress the girls, but Sammy’s motive runs much deeper than that. He was searching for a sense of personal gain and satisfaction. By taking sides with the girls, he momentarily rises in class to meet their standards and the standards of the upper-class. Sammy realizes that Queenie comes from this sort of background, a very different one from his. When Queenie is being harassed by Lengel, Sammy sees that "she remembers her place, a place from which the crowd that runs the A & P must look pretty crummy" (Updike). Queenie’s family was in the class that he envied, that he admired, that he wanted to become a part of. In resigning Sammy exercises his desire to make a change, a new life with new opportunities beyond those of his limited experiences.…

Letting ones emotions get in the way of reality is a very dangerous thought. In the short story, “A & P” by John Updike, the protagonist of the story, Sammy, made a very harsh decision that will effect him greatly, just because he let his emotions take over his good judgment. The three females in the story walk into the market that Sammy works at but in bikini tops, shorts and no shoes. They distract Sammy while their presence is in the store. Eventually, Sammy’s manager scolds the girls for their inappropriate clothing, and tells them that next time they need to be better dressed for the store. Because Sammy feels his manager has embarrassed the girls, he quits in a blink of an eye, due to the fact the beauty of the girls took over Sammy’s emotions. An epiphany is an awakening arrival to understanding the perception of reality, and sudden moment of truth. At the end of the story, Sammy quotes “ I felt how hard the world was going to be to me hereafter”. (As said on page 23 paragraph 31 last sentence.) You can never expect something to enter your life and completely change the way you look at yourself and those around you. In "Greasy Lake", the narrarator faces actions he does that questions if the description associated with him is the person he truly is or if he is just a regular teen who thinks he already grew up and matured. For example, the author in “Greasy Lake”, describes the main character as a tough teen who takes on the role of an adult even when he shows immaturity at moments. “We were all dangerous characters then. We wore torn-up leather jackets, slouched around with toothpicks in our mouths, sniffed glue and ether and what somebody claimed was cocaine” (T. Coraghessan Boyle). The characters in this short story do acts that they will reflect later on in life and realize that they were just childish and extremely ignorant. Although most of them were 18 or above, and felt like nothing could stop them, one man stood up to the three boys and put them to the test. In addition, once the situation got out of hand, they fled…
