A Literacy Narrative
The most vivid, earliest moment I have of learning to write and read was when I was in kindergarten. I recall this because this was the year I met the person who I thought created a poems and rhyme book my mother use to read out loud to my baby sister and myself. I remember every night before bed, it was this blue book that my mother use to get off the bookshelf and read. This was the only way my sister and I would go to sleep. The first day of my kindergarten school, when I walked into the class room I saw that same book And a whole bunch more books. I was like ‘’WOW!!!’’ I must be in book heaven. I never saw so many books. I mean, they were all shapes, color and texture. At the time I didn’t know they were called Nursery Rhymes until I began learning more about it in my school house. There was a particular nursery rhyme that stood out to me then and it still does today because of a certain funny reason I will explain later on in my essay. As my mom and Mrs. Woolabee (whom was my kindergarten teacher) use to read to me, they allowed me to read after them and we also use to act out the stories. Their voices and what they did for some reason seemed to be the same. I don’t know if it was because I was a little girl and was just so amazed on how they both made their voices sound, how they both made me laugh or the fact they held me close as they read to me. I knew the difference from my mom verses the teacher. I guess when you are little and notice both of these females care for you, as a small child you feel a certain way. I recall during home time and school time I use to draw the pictures as they read to me. I remember writing small words like and, up, did, as I learned this rhyme. They use to read to me Jack and Jill. I still remember it. ‘’Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after. Up got Jack, and home did trot as fast as he could caper. He went to bed and

I am not a professional reader, nor am I a professional writer. As a matter of fact, I don’t like writing at all, but then writing is a part of life. I was only 6 years old when I started to take an interest in reading and also started to learn how to read. My grandmother was a greater reader. She would read to me all the time and encourage me to read anything I could get my hands on. I would always see her with a book during her spare time.…

My earliest memory of reading or writing is these old learning books that I used to read in preschool. My mom used to make me read them over and over to ingrain the information in my head; they ranged from the stars to ancient pharaohs and gave me a better background and understanding before I went to school. I used to hate reading but it slowly increased my interest and seemed to give me a better reading ability and I’ve kept the interest since then. During elementary school, we had to read a book a month, to keep ourselves reading, even though, most students dreaded it. It was often difficult to find a book I enjoyed, but when I did I read the entire book in just a few days. My peers tended to be a negative impact on my literacy because they would often joke that I was a nerd for reading, which would make me want to stray away from books.…

Essay 1 Literacy Narrative Overview of the Assignment In this first essay, you will be writing a what is known as a Literacy Narrative. You can approach this assignment in numerous ways, provided that you examine a specific moment in your own development as a reader and/or writer the only catch being that this has to be an experience you can revisit in some way (i.e., a book you can re-read, or an essay, story, poem, etc. that you wrote that you can still find a copy of to read). You could explore the issue from any number of perspectives the first time you read a book that you really enjoyed or the first time you felt good about something you wrote, or, on the other hand, the point when you realized you hated reading or when you became discouraged about writing (or when you decided you werent interested enough to try). The overall goal of the essay in other words, the thesis that youll be illustrating throughout is to communicate why this experience impacted you in the way it did and how you view it now, long after it happened. Has your view, or memory, of the situation changed Why or why not How does the experience still affect you as a reader or writer Note that this is not just a personal story dont just write about what happened, but about how you think it affects you and/or whether you think your memory of the situation is still accurate. Regardless of which approach you take, your essay should satisfy the basic requirements of the assignment, as described below. Evaluation The essay contains a sophisticated level of reflection upon the experience and its impact on your personal literacy. There is a clear thesis/direction for the essay that is apparent by the end of the introduction, and which is developed in the subsequent portions of the essay. Discussion and description are precise and relatable the essay speaks in concrete terms about concrete events, rather than vaguely or about abstract ideas that the reader may or may not be able to…

Sitting on a colorful rug and listening to my pre-kindergarten teacher, who happened to be my aunt, read books from Dr. Seuss was first memory of learning to read. She would read word by word slowly and show us what she was reading and of course she would show off the pictures. She finished reading and now we are sitting at our tiny tables learning how to write alphabet and numbers. Those are the first memories I have of learning to read and write.…

What encompasses a literate individual is a controversial topic. The word “literacy” conveys different meanings to different people. Some people may accept a single definition, while others may develop complex, multi-faceted meanings of the word.…

I began writing stories when I was young. By the time fourth grade rolled around I had tried writing books but never finished them. Every writing project I started I put in a memory box and stored away. My teacher read interesting books to my class. She would take two weeks to read a 500 page book. I enjoyed cuddling up next to watch each expression she expressed. Every couple of months my teacher set up blanket forts and let us read independently all day long. We’d read beside the light of a lamp and bring our own pillows to lay on. This was my favorite time of the year. From there, she let us write stories and read them aloud. My teacher helped develop my love for writing.…

At a very young age, I found my love for reading. I learned to read at age three, and I read to myself nightly ever since I went into preschool. My reading level progressed very quickly. I loved the feeling of being able to finish a challenging book on my own at that age. Going into preschool, I can remember being one of the only kids who could read, so clearly, I felt like I should show off my skills to the other preschoolers. After preschool, I was thrilled to go to kindergarten so everyone in my class would…

Over the years, my interest and awareness regarding reading and writing have varied from time to time. I remember my mother reading bedtime stories to me as a child and actually painting my personal pictures to what she was saying. Once I was old enough to read the stories myself, I would go back and compare my mental pictures with those that were in the book. During my elementary days, I found the novice level of reading and writing to still be interesting. Everything from transferring imaginary stories I had thought of onto a sheet of paper to tell the entire class about my church league team winning the basketball championship the previous Saturday, I thoroughly enjoyed writing and felt I had a personal connection to it.…

Memories of reading and writing in my life, started at a young age. I remember every time I was riding in a car; I would try my best to read every road sign out loud to my mother or father. I would take great joy out of being able to pronounce words that I saw in public and if I was not able to read it, I would work hard to learn how to. Most children did not like the idea of going to bed at night, but I loved it because I knew my mother would read a story or poem to me. Writing was also a big portion of my life when I was a young child.…

Elementary school kids love to play various games during their snack and lunch breaks after class. In the third grade tag games were the hot thing to do during recess.
