A Letter to My Cousin Missy
Missy, I am so proud of the woman you have grown into over the last four years, and could not be more proud to call you my baby cousin. Growing up with you I remember always thinking you were crazy as hell – while simultaneously my best friend. Our relationship evolved from eating fake ice cream cones in the bathtub, to hanging upside-down from my swing set making up stories of bears in the woods, spying on neighbors, and climbing grandma and grandpa’s trees to pick berries. Always supporting each other and sharing a heavy heart in times of loss and pain and continuously having each other’s back and sharing logic of common sense that would bond us when family issues came bearing down brought us closer on a level that was formerly unthinkable. Eventually our relationship developed into a ‘go-to-party-cousin’ status in high school, bringing each other around to our stomping ground to meet boys and party like degenerates – and boy, did we have fun! All the while constantly looking over one another and truly having our best (and safest) interest at heart. Finally, we are at a stage now where those phases of our friendship are left in the past with the dusty roads of Hopkinsburg, and in turn have built the concrete foundation that we currently stand on. You, calling me telling me you met this wonderful man that you think someday you will marry, syphoning tears from me (while simultaneously making me laugh for poking fun at his name). Bringing beautiful Korie into this world, and being an amazing mother and role model to her. Me, calling you first when I find out about any new adventure in my life. You know, I never thought that I would be going to my baby cousin to advice on raising a baby girl, but now that it’s a consistent basis situation, I wouldn’t have it any other way. You are amazing.
You are the exact definition of what ‘family’ should always mean; there for me at the drop of a hat, always ready and willing with honest and helpful advice, and

My first initial thought of her at first glance was that she is the most beautiful individual on the face of this planet. Once I was given the ability to fully observe her in her ever so captivating glow, I instantly knew what it meant to feel unconditional love. I began to feel a sense of ownership as I wanted to do anything in the world for her and to protect her by any means necessary. It was truly a remarkable and wondrous cognizance in which I experienced that faithful day. She gazed up at me as she wrapped her whole tiny hand around my pointer finger. I tell her I love her gently as I have never meant anything so much in my life. As we hold one another, I start to contemplate different aspects of my life. At this point, I then decided that my child is what really matters to me now and that I need to be the parent that she deserves. Never have I had another person to care for or take care…

No wonder you have many pals who got your back when you are in need of help, and as I feel that thing too, I have the urge that losing you might be one of the scariest things ever. Later, the echo somehow became stronger, it’s no longer an echo, it’s a loud calling from out of nowhere, as soon as I reached back just to say hi as a friend, we got closer and you know what, instead of choosing either be with him or learn from him, both are in the palm of my hands now, my echo, my light, you are in every chapter of my diary always. As I am writing this, I am…

I am very lucky to have your as my best friend. I can’t believe it been two years since we graduate from high school. I remember in high school when both of us were discussing which colleges we should apply. I really glad that we both choose to attend a community college instead of a four-year college. I know that we both went to different community colleges but we were still very close and had the same experience. I can’t believe that I am attending Iowa State next fall and of course I will miss…

The past months have been amazing with you written on every page. If there’s anything that I could be thankful for, it’s you coming into my life in the most unpredictable way and time. Looking back to the first few months of classes, it seemed unbelievable to see us end up in this position. Despite that, I want you to know that I admire the simplest gestures you do for me and I appreciate every single one of them. I love it when you sing to me. I love it when you take my hand in yours. I love it when you kiss me goodbye. I love how you tell me I’m beautiful every day. I love the openness. And of course, I love how you make me feel. You’ve been one of the reasons I have a smile on my face. One of the reasons why I love waking up in the morning.…

Have you ever wondered who would be there for you if something tragic happened? When something bad happens to you, you think all of your friends are going to be there right next to you. I unfortunetaly learned the hard way that is not the case. I did learn that my family will be there no matter what happens in my life. Parents are there to put food on the table, take care of the kids, and make sure they are doing the best they can for their child/children. I believe that family loves you no matter what: if you mess up, get injured, basically anything that happens to you, you can go to your family for help.…

You can pick your nose, you can pick your friends, but you can’t pick your family.Your family will always be there for you. You love your family and your family loves you. These are the words that filled my little ears constantly; they are still preached on holidays where I’m surrounded by people who share the same bloodline as me. Your household: mom, dad, siblings; then your grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins. The people that watched your shoe size get bigger and begged for school photos every spring and fall. In reality, a ‘family’ is not always big or happy; family isn’t always blood relation. The definition of ‘family’ is never tested too much because it is always assumed as the people you are biologically related to, however, a family is whatever you desire it to be. There…
