A True Friendship

Many people may ask, “How do I know if a person is a true friend?” A true friend is hard to come by because she is a person that you will cherish for the rest of your life. Being able to enjoy time spent together with a person is an obvious reason to consider them a friend; however, just spending time with someone is not good reason to consider them a true friend. A true friend is not just a sidekick to have fun with, but a positive influence, a good listener, and a supportive companion. A friend who is a positive influence is a key factor in a healthy friendship. True friends are some of the few people that have a person’s best interest at heart. They should always motivate a person and continue to build them up instead of tear them down. A good friend should bring out the best in a person. They should encourage them to always do what is right, and never knowingly let them make a bad decision that could cause harm. Having a friend who is a good listener is greatly appreciated. Being a good listener is a very important step in building a friendship. True friends are the people who ask a question and then wait to hear the answer. Listening does not necessarily mean offering advice or a solution to a particular problem; rather, it simply allows a friend to feel as if her challenges are important. Many people need someone who they can call whenever they need to express any frustration. They generally call on a friend who is willing to listen to their complaints, even if she has nothing to do with the situation. It is not that they desperately need advice, but rather someone to listen to them. Good listening also helps with resolving issues. Many problems in a friendship can be resolved by understanding the viewpoints of the other person involved. Most importantly, being a supportive companion goes a long way.
