Abstract Agriculture is a source of livelihood of majority Indians and has great impact on the economy of the country. In a country like India, where climatic conditions vary substantially and irrigation facilities are poor, sustainable agriculture practices that conserve resources and make a farmer’s life easier are absolutely essential. This paper proposes a system that makes use of contemporary technologies- wireless sensor networks, GSM and SMS – to provide the farmer with the ability to handle the water level in the field remotely and in real time. Introduction Even in the modern era of industrialization, agriculture plays a very significant role in the overall socio-economic development of India. India has an agriculture based economy. 43% of India’s territory comes under agricultural lands. Agriculture along with other related fields like forestry and logging provides employment to 52% of India’s population. Agriculture also accounts for 8.56% of the country’s total exports. According to a survey made in 2007, agriculture accounts for 16.6% of India’s Gross Domestic Product [6]. Hence, it is agriculture that is the most influential field as compared to others in India. This importance on agriculture leads to an emphasis on better agricultural practices. Sustainable agricultural practices that lead to better development of the crop and better utilization of resources are required in order to meet the changing needs of the people and economy and also to maintain the environmental balance. This paper proposes one such method that makes use of wireless sensor networks and mobile phone to control the water level in

    Everything which lives needs water to survive. There are a lot of places in the world where we can find such problem as lack of clean water, and most of these places are developing countries. These include areas in the north of China, India, and the western United States. Global climate change only exacerbates the problem of water shortage. The World population is currently 7 billion people, and each of them needs at least a liter of water a day. What is more, with the explosive growth of the world population, water scarcity is becoming more noticeably. Comprising over 80 percent of the earth surface and over 66 percent of human body, water will be the most important resource in the whole world forever. If oil, gas and coal will be enough humanity for 50-100 years, clean drinking water will end much earlier. Clean water is continuously renewed resource, but at the same time, it has come to an end. Dirty water is the cause of 80 percent of diseases in third world countries (Clarke, 1991). Likewise due to lack of water people on the earth will simply have nothing to eat, such as one kilogram figs need 2500 liters of water, and for the normal development of 1 hectare of wheat requires not less than 2000 liters of water. A lot of water is used not only for dinking, but for agriculture (around 90 percent).     Due to the rise in demand for wireless sensor networks in recent times, significant shift is observed from traditional, wired technologies to upcoming wireless technologies. Asia-Pacific is expected to grow at the highest rate due to increase in production activities in APAC, huge population base, and lucrative government policies. China is, in fact, the growth engine for automation in Asia-Pacific; in spite of lower levels of plant automation. India is also gaining market shares worldwide.The WSN consists of "nodes" – from a few to several hundreds or even thousands, where each node is connected to one (or sometimes several) sensor. Each such sensor network node has typically several parts: a radio transceiver with an internal antenna or connection to an external antenna, a microcontroller, an electronic circuit for interfacing with the sensors and an energy source, usually a battery or an embedded form of energy harvesting. A sensor node might vary in size from that of a shoebox down to the size of a grain of dust, although functioning "motes" of genuine microscopic dimensions are yet to be created. The cost of sensor nodes is similarly variable, ranging from a few to hundreds of dollars, depending on the complexity of the individual sensor nodes. Size and cost constraints on sensor nodes result in corresponding constraints on resources such as energy, memory, computational speed, and communications bandwidth. The topology of the WSNs can vary from a simple star network to an advanced multi-hop wireless mesh network. The propagation technique between the hops of the network can be routing or flooding.…

    With the impending scarcity of nonrenewable resources, people consider to use alternate renewable sources of energy. From all available renewable resources, solar energy is the most abundant energy available and at the same time it can be easily converted into electrical energy. The solar energy refers primarily to the use of solar radiation for practical ends. Currently solar energy is very popular but a fixed solar panel cannot obtain maximum energy from sun due to its movement from east to west. In order to attain maximum efficiency while collecting solar energy, sun tracking based on intensity of radiation and time delay technique's are employed in this proposed prototype. The solar energy collected can be used to provide power for the automatic irrigation system. In the field of agriculture, use of proper method of irrigation is important because lack of rain and scarcity of land reservoir water. Continuous extraction of water from earth reduces the water level and a significant amount of underground water is wasted due to the improper usage. For this purpose, an automatic plant irrigation system is proposed, which irrigates the field depending upon the soil moisture content. The setup consists of an embedded system capable of automatically irrigating the land without human intervention using power derived from solar energy. The prototype is capable of sensing the moisture content based on the threshold values and supply water to it.…
