The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, Italy is a masterpiece of biblical symbolism and humanistic style. Michelangelo was able to present both Catholic and Humanistic element in such a way that they do not visually conflict and blend into one of the most often visited pieces of artwork in the world. This work of art can tell us a lot about the values of society at that time and our progression through that period. Michelangelo’s fresco ceiling has since inspired many artists and elements in the ceiling have been imitated often in the years since then. Michelangelo de Buonarotti, a painter, sculptor, architect and poet was born in 1475 in Tuscany, Italy. At the age of twelve, he began studying under Domenico Ghirlandajo, who was the most fashionable painter in Florence at that time. After that he went to work with Bertoldo di Givoanni, the sculptor and it was then that Michelangelo discovered the style that would become his life’s work. His most famous statues include the eighteen foot David and the Pieta, but he did many other sculptures and tombs. Michelangelo has been described as an uneven tempered, mistrusting and lonely man. It has been said that he lacked confidence in his physical appearance and had poor interpersonal skills. Michelangelo who regarded himself as a sculptor first and foremost, almost refused to paint the ceiling in the Sistine Chapel. Pope Julius II had decided that only Michelangelo could complete this work of art which would help restore Rome to its former glory and persuaded him to do so by bribing him with the promise of his sculpting 40 massive figures for his future tomb. Once Michelangelo agreed to do the chapel ceiling he threw himself into it with vigor.     Once he rounded up a dozen or so up and coming artists he had to deal with the problem of finding a way to get 60 feet in the air. He hired a skilled architect to build a special scaffolding. The architect's idea for the scaffolding was to hang it from the ceiling by four big heavy ropes. Michelangelo discarded this idea because it would put four large holes in his final work. He then drew the plans for the scaffolding himself. He had a set of zigzag stairs that led to the scaffolding which was supported from the sides of the chapel. This allowed him more room to work, and didn't interfere with the ceiling. The next step was to find a medium of paint to use on the chapel ceiling. He started painting the chapel by laying down a base of plaster then painting over it. Soon, he realized that the moisture in the walls caused mold to grow which then softened the plaster causing it to crumble. This was a dissapointing setback for Michelangelo, but his most trusted assistant, Jacopo L'Indaco, developed a new plaster that would not retain moisture. This allowed the painting to continue. He worked high above the chapel floor, lying on his back on scaffolding painting for 5 years. Michelangelo painted some of the finest pictorial images of all time between "1508-1512." He was an accomplished artist, sculptor, architect, and poet who demonstrated his great skill with the creation of many astounding works. Michelangelo 's artistic career can be divided into two periods. In the early period he focused on realism. During this early period Michelangelo 's works included the Pieta and the David. At the age of 24 he completed a statue called the "Pieta," which is still in its original place in Saint Peter 's Basilica. This marble sculpture shows the dead Jesus Christ in his mother 's arms. In 1501 Michelangelo returned to Florence, Italy to sculpt the famous nude sculpture called the "David." The "David" measures 18 feet tall, and is so massive that it took 40 men to move it from Michelangelo 's workshop (Liebert, 72). The second period of Michelangelo 's career was based upon his own imagination. In 1505 Michelangelo was summoned by Pope Julius II to fabricate a monumental tomb for him. We have no clear sense of what the tomb was to look like, since over the years it went through at least five conceptual revisions, and was never actually finished due to frustrating delays. A short time after starting the tomb, Pope Julius II selected Michelangelo to fresco the Sistine Chapel ceiling. When other artists were asked to paint ceilings they lied down on the scaffolding.
