“A Separate Peace” Essay

In the story A Separate Peace, the kids at Devon High are hit by reality when they discover the truth. The Devon High kids aren’t used to war; Gene envies Finny, and Finny envies Gene; and Brinker finds the truth.

First of all, the Devon High School students aren’t used to what war is really like, which causes them to underestimate it. Leper goes into war to see what it’s like, and he comes back completely insane. He is insane because he saw the war firsthand. “They were going to give me a discharge, a Section Eight discharge. A Section Eight discharge is for the nuts in the service, the psychos, the Funny Farm candidates” (165). Leper knows that others consider him insane, and he has invited Gene over to prove to himself that he is not. Some students join the war for fun, even though they would be astonished at what it is actually like. Even Gene was skeptical about joining the war because of what happened to Leper.

Next, Finny and Gene have a huge rivalry going on that they don’t know about at first, and causes their friendship to change. One of the first clues that they have a rivalry is found when Gene makes Finny fall off of the tree. He did this because deep down he knew that Finny was better than him and he was jealous of Gene. Before that, Gene had compared himself to Finny, and didn’t like what he found. “I was beginning to see that Phineas could get away with anything. I couldn’t help envying him a little, which was perfectly normal. There was no harm in envying even your best friend a little” (22). Also, Finny envies Gene for his smartness, showing that he is jealous of Gene. This shows that the rivalry between Finny and Gene is alive and active, even though later on Gene discover that it is actually more one sided.

Lastly, Brinker holds a mock trial to help ease innocence onto Gene, but his plan backfires. Gene actually tells Finny the truth about his envious feelings toward him, and Finny can’t accept this. “He

The backdrop of World War II in A Separate Peace emphasizes the microcosmic war that is occurring in Devon. He characterizes Finny to have no flaws and believes, “There was no harm in envying your best friend a little” (25). “He did it. No one else in the school could have done it so without it getting torn from their back.”(Knowles, page 9). Finny’s ego is very apparent, showing that he knows that he can pull off his pink shirt with his charming personality. Although in chapter 3 Finny tells Gene he is his best friend and Gene’s response is silence. “It was a courageous thing to say… But something held me back.”(Knowles, page 21). The miniature monologue Gene says conveys his ego and how it and his reputation were more important than his closest friend. The rivalry between the two is more of a one way street though. Knowles creates Gene as one who always is strictly trying to comply with the rules and regulations, always obeying his superiors; completely different then that of Finny 's personality. "Over your head? Pink! It makes you look like a fairy!" (909). Considering such, he envies Finny, because Finny can ‘get away with murder ' if he wanted to, and can stay out of trouble doing so. "Phineas could get away with anything. I couldn 't help envying him…a little" (909). Knowles shows how much jealousy Gene had over Finny ' s ability to stay out of trouble, no matter what he did. "This time he wasn 't going to get away with it." (909). He would rather be in accordance to the rules and be on his best behavior, than to be a rebel who goes against everything. Finny, on the other hand was more of a rebel. "I wonder what would happen if I looked like a fairy to everyone." (909). Finny, more of a rebel, is very outgoing; he, however shows himself off as a perfect individual. One day at Devon, he gets into small dispute because he wore the school tie as a belt. This he frees himself from quickly, explaining, "It goes with the shirt and it all ties together…with what we 've been talking about, this bombing in Central Europe." (910). Complying with not only Devon 's rules and regulations,…
