William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” is a surprising short story that begins with the funeral of the main character, Emily Grierson. Faulkner uses an anonymous narrator that is considered to be the voice of “the town” and tells the story out of chronological order. The story basically uses the life of Emily Grierson as a symbol for the changes in the South after the Civil War. Faulkner illustrates the South through the use of a series of symbols, such as Emily’s house, hair, and even Emily’s “rose”.…

Emily’s obsessive actions dominate her choices as can be seen when she buys the poison. “She was over thirty then, still a slight woman, though thinner than usual, with cold, haughty black eyes in a face the flesh of which was strained across the temples and about the eye sockets as you imagine a lighthouse-keeper's face ought to look.” (Faulkner 1071) Emily had the life sucked out of her by her father and empty relationship with Homer. She is described in the same way that you would describe the Grim Reaper, bringing death to those around her. William Faulkner wrote many stories telling the tales of the same town and people as found in “A Rose for Emily”. In each story the lives of those in this town decay around them, falling apart as more Northerners migrate to the South. But as the death of Homer illuminates, it is more than the North that will fail if the tumult in the nation continues. Homer and Emily’s relationship complexity promises a metaphorical death of the Southern ideals. Just as Emily had lost all of her moral standard by killing Homer, the South would lose itself in the strife involving the other side of the country. Faulkner displays a grim future for the nation if willingness for peace cannot be committed to and…

As her eyes adjusted to the ghostly blue light of the waning full moon, she began to see the room. The walls were marble, speckled with peach swirls; she'd always found it odd, considering the rest of the make up of the building was limestone and granite. She paused at the stray thought Her mind didn’t bother to explain her how she knew the dark streaks in the marble were peach nor did it bother to inform her how she knew it was marble she was looking at. These things were fact to her and couldn't be disputed.…

The strand of hair is one symbol throughout the story and signifies the death of Homer. The strand of hair was a little something left of the man representing that Emily couldn't let him go and she still thought about him. In the passage the strand of hair is “ The physical transformation that Emily undergoes as she ages. Her hair grows more and more grizzled until it becomes a vigorous iron-gray. The strand of hair ultimately stands as the last vestige of a life left to languish and decay, much like the body of Emily's former lover” (Sparknotes). The quote is showing how even thought she murdered Homer she still could not let him or and she still deeply cared about him since she slept with his dead body for 10 years.…

The description of Emily 's house indicates the death and decay of the old south, "…lifting its stubborn and coquettish decay above the cotton wagons and the gasoline pumps- an eyesore among eyesores" (Faulkner 315). Also, Emily 's lover, Homer Barron, name represents being sterile. According to Hal Blythe, from the Eastern Kentucky University, "Barron 's 'last name refers to the fruitless, or barren, union with Miss Emily '…. Even in death Barron and the bedroom are covered with 'patient and biding dust ', Faulkner 's traditional image of sterility." Another example of imagery is the "long strand of iron-gray hair" (Faulkner 321) found on the bed next to Emily 's dead lover showing Emily 's unwillingness to let the past…

That man ran off every person who would try to court Miss. Emily. She was basically not aloud to use her mind unless she was told to do so. Because of this and her being secluded away from everybody she did not really have the social skills to carry on in every day life. Well after her father died, she had a chance to get out on her own. That is when she met a Yankee man named Homer Barron. This was kind of a shock to the town's people. When they saw them in public they started thinking that they were going to get married some time. Then comes the twist, what could be looked at as slight mental illness or an actual critter problem, Emily went to the store and bought some poison. She didn't say what is was for when asked, but all the people knew that she bought arsenic. This of course spawned more gossip of how she was going to kill herself and so on. The sad thing was is they really hoped she…

“Symbolism” the practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character. I decided to use this specific form of figurative language to compare the stories of the yellow wallpaper and a rose for Emily. I decided to use the house from the rose for Emily and the wallpaper from the yellow wall paper as my two symbolizing comparisons. The yellow wallpaper represented pain, death, mental abuse, loneliness, suffering, and the filling of being trapped. The house in the rose for Emily represented death, sadness, pain, abandonees, suffering, and loneliness as well.…

In “A Rose for Emily”, the narrator begins the story by letting us know that Miss Emily Grierson has died and that she had not been seen in at least ten years. As the narrator continues to describe the house and it’s location as being located on, “which had once been our most select street,” is now encroached and obliterated by garages and cotton gins, it is undoubtedly obvious that the narrator’s goal was to depict Miss Emily Grierson as one who has been living in seclusion in avoidance of a seemingly changing world. The narrator later goes on to say, “only Miss Emily’s house was left, lifting its stubborn and coquettish decay above the cotton wagons and the gasoline pumps – an eyesore among eyesores.” I felt that this description of Miss Emily’s house as being one of stubborn decay was more so a description of Miss Emily herself than the house.…
