A Review Of The Momix Botanica Show
Momix Botanica Review Momix Botanica, which was sponsored by Eileen Leibowitz &Benson and Christine Lichtig, was performed at the Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 7:30 pm. The show was based around ballet dancing to Indian music. Many of the songs that the show used were religious or traditional Indian songs. The dances that the performers presented were very artistic and they all had a very different feel to them. The show, Momix Botanica, was organized, practiced, and presented extremely well. I feel as if one of the biggest things that made the show successful was the costumes that the performers were wearing. The way people dress says a lot about someone, just like that, in the show the costumes that the dancers were wearing, said a lot about the dances they were performing. For example, the part in the show where one of the girls was wearing a tan colored body suit, the costume set the dance and the mood just right. The song playing in the background was a slow beat calming tune and costume that the performer was wearing was tan colored and not too bright or flashy, making the scene absolutely perfect. This scene really contributed to the show in being successful. Another feature of the show that really made the show splendid, was the expressions on the dancers faces. Every performer knows that one of the biggest things that can either make or break a show is the expressions they make while performing on stage. The expressions on the performers’ faces while dancing really added to the mood of the scene. In the part of the show where the dancers were pretending to be horses, with the fast beat music, all the dancers had excited looks on their faces, which added to the scene rather than if they just had a straight face or perhaps a sad face. Like I said earlier, the expressions on the performers’ faces make an extremely big difference and these performers had great expressions which put the show over the top. Lastly,

I enjoyed the play because the story and music is very interesting, unique and entertaining. I have seen the play before in Las Vegas and I must say that the cast in Las Vegas was much better than the one I saw on Thursday night. The reason is because it went more in-depth with the story and also played every single hit that the band had made. Also, the singers in Las Vegas were much more professional and sounded better because the actor portraying Frankie Valli did not have such a high pitched voice as the one in Curran Theatre. My favorite composition from the band was Beggin because the tempo and beat was so fast-paced and it was impressive how the band had bright stage lights and fascinating dance moves. The music contained catchy rhythms and beats. Some notes would stretch out to make a nice vocal sound and some were just quick beats from the drums. The staging was very flashy because they had different stage lights with different colors for each part of the story. The costumes were very well suited. They actors wore fancy suits and some had a fancy top hot to match their costume. I thought the the whole play went fairly well and the audience seemed to really enjoy it. The music was pleasant and relaxing, the actors were spot on with no mistakes during the show and the crowd was very enthusiastic. The only part I had a slight…

The intense dance between the two leads was so heartbreaking yet beautiful. The piece told the story of a man and a women who cared deeply, supporting each other yet now being good enough. The man and the women had dragging movements, carrying and dropping each other showing that they couldn’t survive. At the end, there was a spotlight on the women as she collapsed to the floor with the man standing over her and others gathering around. The male lead sprinkled rose petals over her body, making the story so powerful.…

As soon as I entered the theatre, it was completely packed. I also saw many people from different age groups; this gave me a feeling that the show would be entertaining enough to get people from all ages to come and see the show. The environment of the theatre was very formal, as there was a red and gold layout and it was also very clean.…

I was very impressed with the acrobatics and choreography which showed great dedication on the company’s part. With my experience in Avenue Q, I know how much time and work it takes to even learn and perfect a simple dance, so I would really like to appreciate and recognize the dedication and hard work of the actors and choreography of the company. I think those elements must have been a big part of the director’s vision and that the director must…

They were sexy and scandalous for those at the Kit Kat Klub, yet did not hinder the actors from doing the many dance numbers, and showed the modesty and decency of characters like Fraulein Schneider. Along with the scenery, the costumes helped so there was no guess work as to where and when the story took place, the lifestyles lived by the various characters, their personalities and who they were as people. I have to add that after seeing the show, me and some of my friends, even one of the guys, wanted to dress up as dancers from the Kit Kat Klub for Halloween. I think they did a terrific job and instead of distracting, they made the story that much more entertaining, especially the guys in…

Whoever worked the lights and sound needed a little work. They cut lights on early that were not supposed to be cut on. In my opinion, during the Emerald City dance sequence, I feel like there should have been color changes on the lights. When the actors named each of the colors, such as green, red, and gold, the lights should have changed. That would have added more dimension to the scene and made it better. Overall, the lighting and sounds of the show were very nice. We just needed better people working them.…

The first thing that caught my eyes was the colorful and unique dance regalia or outfit worn by the dancers. Bright colors such as yellow, orange, red, and light blue wrapped around the dancers beautifully. The older looking male dancers were wearing the feather warbonnets on the head and bustles on the back. Dancers with striking multicolored beaded and fringed outfits were crowding the dance floor. Some of the female dancers dressed simple with their colorful fringed shawls. I noticed that some dancers even had bells attached to their ankles or dance outfits that they wore. I also was told that the feathers and leathers used were inherited from their father up to their great grandfather. The sight was so magnificent – it made me excited to stay for the show.…

My favorite dance was the women’s jingle dance. Personally, I felt that the Jingle dress stands as musical instrument itself because of the metal clinking. In other words, a simple dance movement such as crossing the dancer feet can produce beautiful music along with the sound of the drums. It was interesting to see the women dances to move and stop their fetes exactly when the drum beats.…

The same tune would get caught in your ear, then it was moving you faster or slower; as well as that tune getting louder or softer at appropriate intervals coinciding with the dramas taking place. I also noticed a few woodwind and harp solos during the brighter, happier moments of the performance. The use of castanets and tambourines also caught my eyes and ears. Of course, there was tremendous use of varying the pitch and tempo as well as how loud or soft the music was. Again this is all to enhance how the emotion was conveyed to the audience. Additionally, a piece that stuck out in my head as I left (mainly because I’ve never really noticed or caught on to it until after learning this in one of our class sections) was toward the end when a solo played for a period of time and then that instrument was joined by all the other instruments—playing the same thing—in consistent pleasing…

Visually the production was very clever, humorous, and artistic. The lighting was clever and appropriate for each scene. The costumes through-out the entire show were incredibly striking and suited each character and scene perfectly! In particular, Mrs Lovett’s costume and hair were brilliant and really brought the vibrancy of her character out visually. The set was very cleverly made, with the two levels of Mrs Lovett’s pie shop with the trap door at the top where the victims fall down. It was painted very effectively and looked quite realistic, yet humorous. The stairs used to get to the top level are the same stairs that were used in almost every scene, but not only as a simple staircase as they created the opportunity for the audience to imagine them as something else. For example, when Johanna was singing from her bedroom she was standing on the staircase, yet it was obvious to the audience that she wasn’t actually on a staircase in the story. This imaginative theme continued through-out the production in with many of the props being over exaggerated in a funny way. The limbs were clearly made of foam, yet it suited in with the whole atmosphere of the show. It was made even funnier with Mrs Lovett just carelessly chucking them into the oven. The oven was another stand-out piece of set. It looked incredibly effective with the coloured lights and the smoke coming from it. Effects such as that really helped the whole show step-up another level. The only effect that was not quite fitting was a loud…

I loved the way the man effortlessly leaped about the stage. It seemed as if all he did was effortless yet beautiful, and I was able to easily understand what he was trying to convey. My least favorite piece was “When We Fly”. I was able to understand that the dancers were attempting to portray birds, but I felt it was slightly jumpy; as one dancer would leave the stage, another would come back with enough time for an awkward moment to pass. There were many solos and group parts, and though it was interesting, I felt it was a little choppy and in that, it made me uncomfortable to…

If I could go back I wish that I could have been a part of the show, the show was intriguing and very funny.I would have love to play one the hair stylist, they made me laugh during their show. One part of the special effects that I enjoyed was the Fog machine it gave that part of the show a very mystical feel. My favorite part of this experience was being able to see my friends onstage performing and enjoying themselves. If I could have redone this production I wouldn't have done anything different, the whole performance was very enjoyable. I had so many favorite characters, they were all so great, One of my favorite would have to be Helene the whole time I was rooting for her to get her love. Another character that had me laughing was turtle, the way she would speak and her whole performance had me laughing. This was one of my favorite production i’ve seen put on by Southview…
