A Reaction to the Book Ecotopia
Dylan McCaulla
11/17/2008

After reading the book Ecotopia and listening to the author speak about it, I have mixed feelings on it. Part of me felt it was ok and part of me didn’t care for it at all and here’s why. On the one hand, Ecotopia was very relevant to our lives today. Things happening in the book are happening now. People are starting to be very “Green” and wanting to recycle and reduce our wastes. We are trying to find sustainable resources and make sure that the world we know today will be here for future generations. This was one of the main themes in the book. Ecotopia seceded from the U.S. and became self reliant. They got rid of cars and stopped using plastics, made buildings out of wood, and much more that let them create a self sustaining environment. Today we are trying to use different energy sources like solar and wind, recycling has become more popular, and we are trying to pollute our environment less. These are things that personally I see as a positive thing. I agree that we should be doing less to ruin the earth for the future, so in this regard I liked the book. On the other hand Ecotopia was a very dull book. Plain and simple it wasn’t a good read. It had a good message and relevant meanings but trying to fight your way from the front cover to that last period was excruciating at best. A lot of the same thing being said in different ways. I guess it wasn’t that the book was in theory a thing I guess my one bad thing about it was it just wasn’t my style of book. Not enough fight scenes or magic I guess. I think more people would have done more than just skim the book if it was written differently. Not everything about Ecotopia was awful but neither was it my favorite book ever. It’s probably nothing I will ever read again but it did give me a lot of good things to think

One example that demonstrates my dislike for the book, Brave New World, is on (pg 19-20): “’Bokanovsky’s Process,’ … One egg, one embryo, one adult – normality. … A Bokanovskified egg will bud, will proliferate, will divide.” This instance from chapter one, personally as a reader, makes me dislike the book. I personally don’t like reading about scientific facts; and/or uncanny extraterrestrial-like customs. I think it is just, very plainly, odd.…

There are so many bad things in this world and the environment is one of them bad things. Our environment will never just go away but it’s definitely needs to change. It’s causing damage to our friends and family, it’s taking away all of our animals, and it’s hurting the world we know around us. If we don’t do something about it, will the world’s population go down because of a great amount of people dying? Will the animals become extinct and no one ever talk about them again? Will the oceans be able to hold their ground and keep producing the oxygen it’s giving us? Throughout this essay, Sandra Steingraber does a great job using ethos, pathos, and logos while talking about the environment and the issues it is causing to the people and the…

I didn’t find this book interesting at all, there were not enough details, and there were not very many interesting moments that kept me hooked to the story like other books have. For the first time in my entire life I was understanding in a new level what was happening in the book. I was playing the scenes out in my head and actually enjoying the read. I saw the horse running through the fields, big and muscular. I imagined a below average size boy taming and training the ginormous creature. It all finally came together. I was overjoyed at the end of the book and I was ready for another exhilarating read. After this it took me a while to find another book that could match up to the previous one. But after a while I found a few more books that gave me the same exciting…

The dynamic relationship between humans, Earth and all else within has always captivated me. I was born in 1973 in Jamaica, my parents were politically active, I was taken as a child to rallies mostly about challenging socio-political injustices and poverty, in the streets of London, Kingston and New York and can recall the first time hearing such terminology as, ‘limits to growth’, ‘the pollution pandemic’, ‘alternative energy’, ‘consumerism,’ and ‘overpopulation’. Only much later did a bell go off, connecting the two seemingly separate thought structures, culminating in the realization that these ills, whether social or environmental is one and the same. The Protocols of Montreal, Kyoto and more also fueled me with a drive to make sustainable living not only more accessible, but globally more accepted.…

In chapter four of Brian G. Henning’s book, “Riders in the Storm,” he talks about sustainability and the different views on sustainability over the years. Sustainability, is not something that is only related to the environment it can also be related to economics and even politically. Sustainability in terms of the environment today is a term we use to describe how much of something we can use while still leaving enough for it to naturally regenerate back to the level it was a before. The task of sustaining the environment is not easy and is a challenge that humans need to take on to help future generations. Humans will need to think about what kind of character they have and their relationships not only to future generations but also other living organisms.…

I didn’t personally like the book I thought it wasn’t very exciting. Maybe if the book was more exciting or had more twist or turns it would be more enjoyable. It did change my attitude about boys being smarter than girls but even when Calpurnia was talk all science to her brother he had no idea what she was talking about. I probably would not recommend this book unless you're more into having the same idea throughout the whole…

Parts of the book I enjoyed and parts of the book I didn’t enjoyed. What I enjoyed about the book was the learning the history of humans and different societies. I enjoyed hearing about all these groups from the Polynesians to the Europeans. I was great reading how their geographical locations had such great impact on their diversity and advancement in history. Also I enjoyed hearing some of the real life experiences such as the authors trip to Australia because I could relate to the hot heat of it. With every book there are a few things I did not enjoy about it. First it was hard for me to follow it. Certain topics I did not understand and it seemed too lengthy to me. I know the author was supporting his thesis but I thought some parts weren’t as important as others. Which leads to that some parts of the book was very dull for me. This made me lose track of where I was, and what was going on. Overall I had mixed feelings on the book, both positive and…

Humankind is advancing, but the environment is deteriorating, yet there are changes that the world is still waiting for. Both Yann Arthus-Bertrand in “A Wide Angle View of Fragile Earth” and Elizabeth Kolbert in “The Weight of the World” have an underlying agreement that society is to blame for these environmental changes. Although they persuade the audience in various ways, they have the same main goal: protecting the environment.…
