A Rainbow Nation
Have you ever seen a rainbow? A rainbow consists of seven colours that are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. However, have you ever heard about rainbow nation? Rainbow Nation is a term coined by Archbishop Desmond Tutu to describe post-apartheid South Africa. Our most beloved motherland -Malaysia. It is a small nation of 29 million peoples of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds living and existing harmoniously in a country that can be rightly called the Rainbow Nation. And the unity of these multi-culturalism comes together to form a country made up of races from all walks of life. Our print, broadcast and online media are multilingual. We are Malay, Chinese, Indian, Orang Asli, Iban and Kadazan. We are Muslim, Buddhist, Christian, and Hindu. Each ethnic group has its own underlying culture that separates it from the others, and they have achieved different levels of integration. We are of different races and can be seen co-existing on the streets in various costumes, adding colour to the scene.
However, it gives rise to the challenge for us to live together. We have had to learn to deal with our problems in a concrete and pragmatic fashion. One way which we are meeting this challenge head-on is to give the theme of unity a name, and making an all out effort to have our people understand and accept diversity as the basis of our unity. 1Malaysia is the clarion call for Malaysians from all walks of life to rise to this singular challenge.
1Malaysia stresses national unity and ethnic tolerance. The 2010 values of 1Malaysia as articulated by our prime minister Dato Sri Najib are perseverance, a culture of excellence, acceptance, loyalty, education, humility, integrity, and meritocracy. It is not a ready-made programme being pushed down by the government. It is a reminder of the single most important issue we face as a society, one that will make or break this beautiful country: our unity in diversity.

Nowadays,Malaysia is a leading tourist destination because we are famous for our multi-racial society who live in peace and harmony. In my opinion, I stronglyagree thatnational unity can be enhanced to strengthen solidarity among all thevarious races in this country. In this essay, I will discuss three solid strategiesfor enhancing national unitywhich areevery individual needs to be more patriotic,be respectful of each different culture and mould a future generation that istolerant and grateful to be Malaysian. First and foremost, every individual can play a part in enhancing national unit bybeing more patriotic. This is becausewhen we are patriotic we will appreciatebeing a Malaysian citizen who has the right to live a peaceful and war-free life. Moreover, having high patriotism will ensure that we really love our country andwe will not do anything to harm the peace and harmony. For example, every oneof us can respect the µNegaraku¶ song and our µRukunegara¶, fly our national flagduring Independence dayand so on. Therefore,if everyone plays their part andbecomes more patriotic, this will easily enhance the spirit of national unity. Secondly,as loyal Malaysians, we should always be respectful of each and everyculture found in this country. This is due to the fact thatrespecting the mainraces like Malays, Chinese and Indians as well as the indigenous races willensure that we will continue to live side by side in harmony. In addition, everyrace that makes up the Malaysian society is unique and should be cherished for its special traditions and cultures. For instance,we should visit one another during µOpen House¶ or wedding celebrations, religious festivalsand many more. Thus,by respecting the uniqueness of every culture, this helps us promote racialsolidarity and enhance national unity.Last but not least, truancy can be curbed by encouraging cooperation with localpolice authorities and the general public. This means thatwe can get assistancefrom the police as they are the higher…

We treat other people brotherly or sisterly and always have great respect for each other. We took every problem to round-table talks. "Harmony within diversity must be nurtured and cherished" is a statement which brings forth an empowering message. It is a beautiful message that instils tolerance and contentedness within an individual towards their brethren and sistren, for it does not condemn nor does it condone unity but merely states that one should cherish their individuality or nationalism, as they would their fellow countrymen, with their heads held high. It is at its core, a relatively simple and tacit message that spreads positivity. However, like all messages, given enough time, its definition will branch and intertwine, therefore, perverting itself. Nevertheless, it will remain as something that is of upmost importance; hence, it is only rational that one at the…

    Unity in Diversity

The political and social climate that prevails in the world today emphasises difference, disunity, and destruction rather than the qualities of unity and productive and constructive energy that are required to sustain human societies. These negative processes and forces have perpetuated our alienation from the basic material roots of our existence, the natural world of which we are a part. The use of the phrase unity in diversity and similar concepts is not a new phenomenon. Its roots reach back hundreds of years in non-western cultures such as indigenous peoples in North America and Taoist societies in 400-500B.C. In premodern Western culture it has been implicit in the organic conceptions of the universe that have been manifest since the ancient Greek and Roman civilisations through medieval Europe and into the Romantic era.…
