A Psychological Occurance of Montresor as an Obsession of Revenge with Impunity in Edgar Allen Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado"
Edgar Allen Poe is an American short story writer, poet and literary critic. His famous short stories are based on not only horrific events, but also on psychological distortations as in "The Cask of Amontillado".In his literary critic on short story writing style,he says a short story should turn around a central event and all the other things must have use for that main point. In this short story, his main point is the result of obsession of revenge with impunity and all the other actions serve for the protagonist's punishment against provoking.Poe uses the elements of symbolism generously and for this purpose,he benefits from mythology. He uses Dionysos, the god of wine,to define Montresor's inner self.He uses the feast for Dionysos, the time when people get crazy and can get revenge in that chaos,to justify the murder. All his methods -symbolism,irony,pun,foreshadowing,etc.- create the subject; the psychological obsession for revenge which occurs by coming up against an indignity and having the feeling inside by not making victim's personality felt.

We have a mad protagonist named Montresor and a drunk antagonist named Fortunado, which means luck-adverse to his bitter end.Montresor begins his story by mentioning to an unknown person/thing about a vow of revenge for the insult of Fortunado.Planningly,in the feast time for Dionysos,Montresor takes Fortunado to his underground cellar by saying he'll take him at where the famous wine Amontillado is present. They have conversation including foreshadowings, ironies and puns.Drunk Fortunado gets aware of his tragic occasion only when he's walled up by Montresor among Montresor's family catacombs. With this horrible scene and murder style,we see how grim the mankind can be when they feel offended psychologically.

In the story,we're not able to find any specific sign proving Montresor's being insane. However, from the symbols, narrating style and the bitter end,it's not hard to label the protagonist as a mad

Montresor seems to be vindictive and conniving regardless of the wrong that was committed on Fortunato’s part. He clearly enjoys the scheme he has concocted to get back at Fortunato, it almost seems like Montresor is getting pleasure from the heinous punishment he has inflicted on Fortunato. For example, Montresor says, “I continued as was my wont, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile NOW was at the thought of his immolation.” He does not seem to be angry over this matter but rather crazy with the need to carry out his revenge, so much so that he even finds it funny that Fortunato has no idea of what is to come. Another example of how Montresor’s character refers back to his need for revenge is the way that he lured Fortunato into his trap. He basically taunted Fortunato by saying that he will take his wine to Luchesi to taste because he knew that Fortunato would not be able to pass that up. Montresor has gone to extensive lengths to punish Fortunato when all he really had to do was insult him back or embarrass him. The author’s characterization of Montresor show his true colors, it tells how deep down he is the type to seek an outrageous and overall deadly revenge because he is a vindictive…

Montresor, the main protagonist, appears as a dangerous and brutal psychopath “I given Fortunato cause to doubt my good will” and “he did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation.” (Poe 144). As time is passing by in the story, Montresor reveals how obsessive and insecure he is. Montresor decides to get revenge and kill Fortunato just for a mere insult, and only because of his weak and unconfident personality. The insult and the other thousand injures mention before could have been just part of Montresor’s insecure nature. Furthermore, Fortunato does not expect that Montresor is seeking revenge or sees him as a threat. Besides, Montresor plays a great role of a caring friend until the end of the story. Montresor even refers to Fortunato in several occasions as his friends or “My poor friend ” (Poe 147) making Fortunato doubts of…

Throughout the story, Montresor betrays Fortunado. He asks Fortunado to come into his catacombs aware that he would be killing him. He taunts Fortunado by asking him if he want to go back, because he is sick. Montresor does so when saying “‘Come,’ I said, with decision, ‘we will go back; your health is precious…’” (Poe 535) However, when Fortunado insists he comes to taste the amontillado, he is once again betrayed by Montresor when he drinks more of his wine. He becomes overly intoxicated and once again, is able to be taken advantage of. The entire walk through the catacombs Montresor betrays Fortunado by lying to him and taunting him about being sick. At the end of the story Montresor traps Fortunado by building him into a small shackled space. “A succession of loud and shrill screams, bursting suddenly from the throat of the chained form, seemed to thrust me back violently” (Poe 536). According to Chad Dyer “The story is written in the form of confession, its reader learning of Montresour’s vengeful deed fifty years after its execution." (Dyer). When Montresor kills Fortunando he commits not only a huge crime but a betrayal that is unbelievable to most people.…

Anything not taken in moderation can be damaging. In one of Edgar Allen Poe's best-known tales of horror, "The Cask of Amontillado," he suggests that pride can be a very dangerous thing, when one is overwhelmed with it. Through the use of foreshadowing, irony, and symbolism, Poe presents a horrific drama of two men. One who will stop at nothing to get the revenge that he deems himself and his family worthy of, and another who's pride will ultimately be the fall of his own death. Fortunato falls prey to Montressor's plans because he is so proud of his connoisseurship of wine, and it is for the sake of his own pride that Montressor takes revenge on Fortunato. Poe utilizes the theme of pride and many other literary techniques such as foreshadowing, revenge, and irony, in order to create a horrific and suspenseful masterpiece.…

Although “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe contains only two characters, the personalities of these individuals are extremely intriguing. Montresor, the more interesting of the two characters, displays qualities that would easily justify labeling the man a psychopath. According to an author for the New York Times, Montresor could quite possibly be the most insane character Poe has ever created, stating: “In his tales of Gothic horror, Edgar Allan Poe gave the world a fine collection of neurotics, paranoids and psychopaths. But none are quite as deranged as the narrator of ‘The Cask of Amontillado”’ (P. McGrath). Through his impulsive actions, his apathetic nature, his manipulative attitude, and his superficial charm, Montresor proves to be an accurate representation of a psychopath.…

The narrator of The Tell-Tale Heart begins by persuading the reader that he is not mad, simply because he feels that his senses have been sharpened and he was ever so wise enough to stalk his victim throughout the night at midnight without being suspected of it. He also stated more than once that he was nervous. Mean while, Montressor in The Cask Of Amontillado seemed to be very confident . He is some what arrogant that he would be able to follow through with his plans of revenge on Fortunato.…

Edgar Allen Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado," is a story of revenge to the highest degree. This theme is evident in the first sentence, "the thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge." The suggestion of vengeance is repeated several more times in the opening paragraph. Poe gives us a view at premeditated murder from the details in his story told through the eyes of Montresor. While he carefully removes unnecessary parts of the story, Poe elaborately and vividly relates this bone-chilling tale of revenge while keeping his audience waiting for more. The theme of Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado" is reprisal and he uses all the elements of fiction (plot, setting, characters, and theme) in illustrating this theme to his readers.…

Revenge is taken for many silly reasons; this is shown in the short story, “The Cask of Amontillado”, by Edgar Allan Poe. Montresor has been hurt many times by Fortunado so in the story, Montresor takes revenge on Fortunado and kills him. Edgar Allan Poe demonstrates irony in “The Cask of Amontillado”. Irony is when something happens, but you expected the exact opposite, Edgar Allan Poe used irony by having Montresor pretend to care about Fortunado , by making comments about Fortunado , and by Montresor saying he wants Fortunado to have a long life.…

The first thing I realized about Montresor was his vengefulness, or his desire to harm. At the opening we read that Montresor has vowed revenge against Fortunato. The story opens with “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge” (Poe, 1). It is there we see the animosity Montresor had toward Fortunato. In the beginning Montressor also said “I must not only punish but punish with impunity” (Poe, 1). That too revealed the resentment he had towards his friend.…
