A Proposal to Investigate Effective Solutions to the Unconsciousness About Recycling
A proposal to investigate effective solutions to the unconsciousness about recycling in Bilkent University

1. Introduction
Considering huge increase in consumption and contamination, waste management has become a pivotal issue over the last few decades. One of the most substantial methods of waste management is recycling. Recycling is a process of turning materials away into new products which are thrown. As stated in the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s report, common recyclable materials are briefly paper, plastic, glass, metals, compostable materials such as food scraps and yard trimmings and miscellaneous materials such as batteries ( “Common Recyclable Materials” 1 ). Recycling provides many environmental benefits for instance reducing air and water pollution, saving energy, saving natural resources, reducing the need to build landfills and reducing greenhouse gas emission (“Environmental Benefits of Recycling” 1). 2.1. Recycling in Turkey
Environmental protection and recycling are currently immature processes in Turkey. As reported by Turkish Statistical Institute, there are 34 million ton urban waste and 17,5 million ton industrial waste in 2004; however, recycling rates are so low. For instance, recycling rate of paper is 40% in 2012 in Turkey; on the other hand this rate is about 70% in European Union countries. Additionally, in comparison to high packing waste recycling average rate 30% of Europe, Turkey lagged far behind the average (Gönüllü 2). This problematic condition caused by two main problems, insufficient physical structure and unconsciousness of people. There are 208 collecting and separating facility and 171 recycling center in Turkey (Kılınç 2). Nevertheless, substantial centers also haven’t used efficiently due to lack of consciousness of people about recycling. 2.2. Recycling in Bilkent University
Recycling processes such as collecting and keeping recyclable materials is handled by Support Services Unit

Recycling is the method of taking a product after it is done being used and using all or some of its parts to make another product. It is important to our planet because it reduces the waste in our landfills and the amount of energy in production. There are several benefits to recycling such as it conserves natural resources, decreases emissions of greenhouse gases, reduces the need for landfills and incineration, and helps to prolong the environment for the generations to come.…

When thrown into a recycle bin in a college biology class, where does that plastic water bottle head off to? Does it arrive in a landfill in India, in the Gulf Coast, or reused in other bottles? The research question that will be addressed is; how efficient is recycling, from the bin to reusable material, and how well does it reduce landfills compared to incineration? Answering this question will be useful for environmental scientists and other related fields to determine the importance and necessity of material recycling. Reducing landfills using recycling can help to clean the environment and atmosphere so it is important to know exactly how much recycling helps and if it can improve.…

Concentrates hazardous ash for burial o Sale of energy can reduce cost • Cons o Expensive to build o Produces hazardous/toxic ash (lead, cadmium, mercury, dioxins) o Emits air pollution (dioxin, mercury, CO2) o Does not encourage waste reduction • Waste reduction: produce much less waste and pollution and the potential wastes we do create can be reused, recycled and/or composted. o Not “trash cans” but “resource containers” Recycling • Recycle: separate and recycle paper, glass, cans, plastic, metal and other items and buy products from recycled materials o US: 34% of MSW is recycled and 8% is composted • So, 54% landfill (decreasing), 13% incinerator (decreasing), 25% recycled (increasing) and 8% composted (increasing) • Two types of recycling: • • Closed-‐loop recycling: recycling post-‐consumer waste into same product it came from (aluminum cans into more aluminum cans) Open-‐loop recycling: recycling waste into different product (office paper into toilet paper or plastic bottles into fleece jackets) Reduce: consume less and live a simpler lifestyle Reuse: Rely more on items that can be used repeatedly instead of throwaway items, and buy necessary items secondhand, and borrow or rent them.…

Recycling and waste prevention are two very important ways to help address the issues of the environment concerning climate change. Recycling is a very beneficial factor that more individuals need to exercise in order to improve the environment’s pollution, reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, and save energy and natural resources that are used to produce products from virgin materials rather than from recycled materials, which uses less energy and produces less harmful pollution. Recycling has many benefits that helps improve the earth’s conditions. Waste prevention and recycling are real ways to address these problems and begin to make a change. Recycling turns materials that would otherwise become waste into valuable resources, reducing the amount of natural resources needed to produce these same products. Collecting your used bottles, cans, and newspapers and taking them to a recycling bin or collection facility is just the first step, in a series of steps that generates a host of financial, environmental, and social returns. These benefits accrue locally as well as globally. Recycling protects and expands United States manufacturing jobs and increases United States competitiveness by creating more recycling jobs and facilities within the United States and producing more of our own products with recycled materials and being less dependent on outside countries and companies for these products. Recycling prevents pollution caused by the manufacturing of products from virgin materials.…

Recycling has been a well known idea for so many years, but now we need it more than ever. Now in the world there are so many problems with the environment like Global Warming, toxic waste, and not to mention not recycling is very costly but recycling reduces the landfill space, helps conserves natural resources, and reduces the production of greenhouse gases . When you recycle you also help save animals so the rims of a six pack of soda doesn’t end up blocking a fish's gills or a plastic bag getting eaten by a turtle and having it choke on the bag. Recycling can also be a group effort where you get a group of people from your community, school, church, job, or just you and your friends so not only your saving the environment but your having fun with people you know while doing it.…

Currently in America the average person throws away seven and a half pounds of garbage every day. Most of this garbage goes into to landfills, where it's compacted and buried. These lands fills have huge impacts on the environment; they cause pollution to the local environment by contaminating the groundwater and aquifers, contaminating the soil, and producing methane. One of the ways to help reduce this problem is by recycling.…

Recycling is a major part of our society. It is something that we as American citizens do daily without thinking twice about it. That is one of the main reasons I chose to write this paper on Recycling sustainability. The role of recycling to preserving our environment and to live in a sustainable way is a lot more important than many people think it is. One of the main reasons I chose to write this paper on recycling is because it is a major part of our everyday lives and it is something that most people and businesses do. As many people think they are helping by recycling, (do not get me wrong, it is a major help to our environment) they do not understand that it has major negative effects on the environment. Recycling is said to be the basis for sustainability. At…

Each ton of solid waste diverted from disposal, whether reused, recycled or composted, is one less ton of solid waste requiring disposal. The value of reusing, recycling and composting solid waste is clear when you consider the amount of disposal space required to accept that material. By implementing other waste- management strategies (as well as resource-management strategies), we reduce our dependence on incinerators and landfills. And when using recycled materials in place of trees, metal ores and minerals, there is less pressure to expand forestry and mining production.…
