“a Place I Would Like to Visit Again and Again ...”
The PIllars was one of our favorite lodgings during our month-long visit to NZ for many reasons. First -- our hosts. John and Ruth Boddy were, to us, all that is great about New Zealanders. They were warm, welcoming and very helpful throughout our stay. Upon arrival, we were welcomed and given snacks and drinks. We were made to feel like old friends who had come for a visit. (While we were there, another couple from the US were staying there who had stayed there several times previously. It is the kind of place I would like to visit again and again.)

Second -- the place. John and Ruth have created a beautiful villa-type setting on a 5-acre garden estate, with a pool. Our immaculate room was spacious with a balcony and a comfortable king-sized bed appointed with beautiful linens. Ruth herself made most of the bed linens and draperies throughout the house. The bathroom was spotless with full amenities (shampoo, bath products, hair dryer). There were set ups for tea and coffee and the room had beer, water, fruit and a bottle of wine.

The outdoor spaces are simply beautiful, with lanais and porches surrounded by incredible gardens which they keep up themselves. I took a long ramble around the garden with my camera and got some great photos.

Breakfasts were plentiful with savories, breakfast breads, fruit salads, homemade yogurt, cereals, coffee, tea and fruit juice. John and Ruth joined their guests for breakfast and we had a wonderful time in the mornings with them and their other guests, sharing adventures and advice.

Since we were staying there for several days, I had asked about where to do laundry and Ruth simply took it from me and it was all done, waiting for me when we got back that evening.

Since the Pillars is outside the actual town area, you will need a car to access restaurants and the local sights. However, it was well worth the drive to stay at such a beautiful

From the passage of the bedroom, which is filled with 18th century prints of Raphael's decoration, to the soft cornice of the ceiling that is engraved with a light leaf shape and accompanied by a rose. In the middle of the room sits the astounding four-post bed, which is finely detailed with soft shapes and flowers. The whole room is decorated cream and gold, again accentuating the feel of elegance and sophistication. The room is filled with 19th century portraits of the Howard family and their…

It had beautiful, old ironwork surrounding the verandah, and dark green paint on the doors (Campbell). We toured the house jumping at every random sound because we were afraid of ghosts. The décor of the home was exquisitely decorated in the time period of the house (Campbell). When we finished our self-guided tour we walked out to stand on the verandah and admire the view. It was dark outside and nobody was in the home so we decided to spend the night here. We found two beds and quickly fell asleep.…

It's elaborate, a cheerful red and white Georgian Colonial mansion overlooking the bay. There is a lawn started at the beach and ran toward the front door for a quarter of a mile, jumping over sun-dials and brick walks and burning gardens. The front was broken by a line of French windows, glowing with reflected gold, and wide open to the warm windy afternoon.…

Pushing past my anxiety and entering the family’s home, I look around me and took in the large, multi-purpose room. Scattered amongst the large wooden dining table, couches, and television, the sentimental trinkets and children’s toys added warmth to the small home. Although the walls were unfinished and half-painted, the home felt lived-in and cherished. The air was stale and warm, yet the room exuded an air of sweet, beloved family memories. Immediately,…

Confined within the lacking gardens and hedges of her temporary lodgings, the narrator, Jane, was forced to bide her time. “You know the place is doing you good,” John argued to his wife about the house (Gilman 599). It had only been two weeks, but she was curious as to why her husband’s promises to recondition the home had not yet begun. He had set her up in a large bare room he referred to as the “nursery” (Gilman 598). It was a sickly yellow color located high up in the house where she would be able to get plenty of the air that was said to be so good for her condition. As a physician, John felt he could use the confines of the house, specifically the room, to monitor his wife’s progress. The wallpaper that she madly detested was, in his opinion, “getting the better of [her]” so he left it up along with the bars on the windows and a gated staircase, because in order for her to get better she shouldn’t “give way to such fancies” (Gilman 599). Being a compliant patient, she endured the wallpaper as it was, torn and moldy and eventually strangely enticing.…
