True love is viewed in various ways. Whether it is viewed as something that is developed over a life time of being with someone, or two teenagers falling in love at a young age, love has many definitions. Love can be a controversial topic due to different views in society, or depending on your age. Love can be temporary, infatuation, or it can be forever, true love. In Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, love is displayed at all level. Regardless of the age, views of society, traditional oppositions against it, or how crazy it makes lovers, Shakespeare displays the idea that true love always wins. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare uses various different ways to show his ideal that true love always wins. One of his main ideas is that no matter what happens, lover always have the advantage. As said by Lysander, one of the main characters in the play, “The course of true love never did run smooth” (I.i.134). He is saying to Hermia that there will be challenges in love, and there always has been, but true love can overcome anything. In the play, Hermia and Lysander are supposed to represent true love due to the fact that they want to be together, and are willing to do whatever it takes to be together. Shakespeare displays this idea in the very beginning of the play. This allows him to develop various problems for the lovers to overcome, and allows him to develop them in a way that makes his ideals very clear. By placing the lovers in situations that strain their love, it shows how strong true love is, and how weak infatuation is.
