A Handful of Dates
Tayeb Salih’s “A Handful of Dates” is a short story with the theme “a rise in social class often results in losing touch with one’s humanity” ; universally known as “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely” (John Dalberg-Acton). The author ingeniously utilized the ruthlessness and the hypocritical nature of the antagonist (the grandfather), in a manner that would illustrate the theme. The grandfather clearly illustrates the theme through his actions. While he accuses Masood of being a “worthless” man “He’s an indolent man and I don’t like such people” (129) for losing himself to his emotions and losing all of his inherited wealth, he on the other hand has lost his humanity through his antipathetic and ruthless businesslike attitude to gain power and wealth. Being one of the more powerful men of his agricultural society, he owns a large surplus of food. During the harvest of Masood’s palm dates, he ended up taking his full portion of the share (five sacks) from Masood rather than show sympathy and donate even a single sack of dates. Even with Masood’s debt, his grandfather was not satisfied with possessing two-thirds of Masood’s fields. His ambition was to control all of Masood’s inherited wealth. He even boasted to his grandchild that he would own the rest of Masood’s lands before his passing. The grandfather was not only a ruthless man, but he was also a hypocrite. Externally to his grandchild he was the “kind” and religious grandfather. But in reality he was a hypocrite even to his own religion. He completely ignored the “Chapter of the Merciful” from his religion/Koran. He showed no mercy whatsoever to Masood in his poor state, after everyone took all the harvested dates from Masood’s palm trees he adds to him “You still own fifty pounds in debt to me” (130). Some might perceive that the grandfather was only doing this job to leave his descendants with something that would make their lives more comfortable. But he didn’t have to go

Throughout this story, the grandmother struggles to find what the definition of “good” is. The grandmother wears a hat to show others that she is a lady. However, this hat is also a symbol for her foolish ethical code. When the grandmother prepares for the car trip with the family, she dresses up in collars and cuffs to show she is a lady “In case of an accident” (12). The grandmother acts as if she is completely undisturbed with the fact that she would be dead in this situation and remains unconcerned that her son, daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren would have also possibly died. The grandmother, however, only cares about her appearance as a lady. This silly concern shows how self-centered she really is and how delicate her ethical conviction is. This symbol further develops when the family becomes, in fact, involved in a car accident. The grandmother’s hat falls apart, much like her ethical conviction, and after she continued to stare at it, she eventually “let it fall on the ground.”(96) Once she is thrown from the car and her family is face-to-face with the Misfit, the brim of the grandmother’s hat then falls off. Her appearance as a lady melts as the damaged hat falls.…

Allowing your past to hold you down. Mighty’s dad, ‘Killer Kane’, is a criminal. Kids at school would chant, “Killer Kane, Killer Kane, had a son who has no brain”. This would make Mighty angry because he didn’t want to be like his dad. Also, MIghty’s grandparents would think that Mighty was like his father. For example, at the carnival Blade and his friends had been chasing Might and Freak. Blade had gotten in trouble with the police and when the police came to Mighty’s house to take him home, the grandparents expected the worse. But the police had told them that Mighty was a hero. This shows how his past had held him back because his grandparents had assumed that he was in trouble.…

The grandmother who remains unnamed all throughout in the story is the protagonist and the central character of Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is hard to Find, a tragic story of a family who decided to go on vacation but got killed randomly on the road by a criminal on the loose named “The Misfit”. She is endowed with a joyful spirit, a passion in life in spite of her age. She is a non-stereotypical woman whose old fashion clothing and beliefs contradict her strong, manipulative mind, an opposite trait of a passive and complacent woman in her time. The Grandmother is a smart woman who knows how to assert herself by trying to use all the available resources around her and manipulating them by appealing to their morality. From this information we say that the grandmother is a round and dynamic character as her character changes from being a manipulative mother to her son Bailey, to a quirky, playful grandmother who ignite her grandchildren’s imagination by her stories, and finally, to a humble human being who experiences “awakening” and acceptance of defeat in her moral battle and failed manipulation scheme with The Misfit.…

Evidently, grandfather had been practicing for the common good for his whole life, yet he called himself a "traitor". His words seemed more powerful than his death in that "my folks were more alarmed over his last words than over his dying". The narrator was confused. On one hand, the narrator was "warned emphatically to forget what he had said", raising more curiosity; on the other, the narrator "could never be sure of what he meant", and all he could do was having a feeling of an anonymous guilt, "whenever things went well". Never knowing whom the grandfather betrayed, he was being praised among the whites for having such attitude, further leading to a moral ambiguity. It should be concluded, it's himself, his family, or his race as a whole, grandfather had betrayed. At ease he was; he felt comfortable being satisfied with the current condition, forgetting to fight. Eventually, however, he answered to the call of guts that people who do give up arms are doomed to death and ruin, leaving his words and warns, hoping his future generations would not act like him.…

Life is not only stranger than fiction, but frequently also more tragic than any tragedy ever conceived by the most fervid imagination. Often in these tragedies of life there is not one drop of blood to make us shudder, nor a single event to compel the tears into the eye. A man endowed with an intellect far above the average, impelled by a high-soaring ambition, untainted by any petty or ignoble passion, and guided by a character of sterling firmness and more than common purity, yet, with fatal illusion, devoting all…

As a child, our parents teach us values and principles. Most of the time the values they teach have been handed down through their families and changing them slightly to adapt to the time and culture. What if parent 's don 't teach their kids ethical values? What if over the years, people have decided that certain principles has become obsolete? A case in point is the story "A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O 'Conner. This story is a prime example of how people 's morals change throughout history. I propose that in order for us to get a better understanding of this story we need to analyze the theme of the story, evaluate the nature of the grandmother, and explore what the grandmother 's hat represents.…

Grandparents are the parents of one’s own parent. Grandparents spoil and care for you whenever your parents are not. In some situations, grandmothers are more involved with the grandchildren than any family member. In “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, the main characters is the Grandmother and her son, Bailey. The son’s family goes on a family vacation to Florida. The grandmother tags along after she insisted not to ride along. She didn’t want to be left alone at home and wanted to keep the kids company on the ride to Florida. Throughout the whole story, the family experienced certain events that the grandmother is to blame for the family’s fate and tragic ending. She told stories to the children about the old days and compared it to present day in the story. Also she insisted to make a couple stops and gestures that could have been avoided if she did not come on the trip. “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is an ironic title for this short story by Flannery O’Conner. The southern Gothic writer wrote about the things she observed in Georgia. Her stories were far from the normal because her ending fates of the characters were dramatically disastrous. Clearly stated, the grandmother is to blame for the family’s fate because of the unexpected effort to stop at the plantation house, the cat a board the car ride, and recognizing the Misfit and his fellows.…

“Grandchildren love and respect their grandparents” is the universal theme articulated in numerous art forms, including the folk tale “The Old Grandfather and His Little Grandson” and the poem “Abuelito Who.” Universal themes, making an appearance in various sorts of literature, are the messages and morals of life that have been handed down from generation to generation, because they are messages that can be understood by every person throughout all of history. Some universal themes can be strenuous to perceive, however in these works, that is not the case. Whilst, the poem by Sandra Cisneros and the Russian folk tale retold by Leo Tolstoy share the same message and a few other similarities, they also have a moderate amount differences. The…

The present book is a saga of Vile and Naïve as we find these two kinds of people in the world of power and politics. Vile is a persona for whom only the ends matter while Naïve is a persona for whom means is as important as ends. In the battle for power, sometimes Naïve wins, but more often it is Vile. The Management Guru Mr. Pavan Choudary takes the prior statement as a challenge and enunciates the ways for Naïve to handle the tactics of Vile. This book is for Naïve who is benevolent and compassionate and above all a man with conscience. He is complete opposite to Vile who is a man with lots of ambition but little conscience. The author challenges the common Machiavelli’s belief that a good man hasn’t got a chance. He asserts that the path of goodness coupled with creativity and wisdom is the only way to an enduring victory.…
