Since the 1950’s the café has been using very, very old equipment. That equipment includes: old cash registers, espresso makers, coffee makers, and so on. But the most important old method that was being used is the manual entry of time and attendance. Now since I have started upgrading the café, I feel that it is now time for a new time system. This particular time system will allow employees to key in a special employee number that will automatically stamp the time displayed on the clock. The same method will be used for clocking out for lunch and clocking out for good.…

As I was reading this article I could not help but wonder if Thompson was describing a real culture or if this was a work of fiction. I could not understand why this Nacerima society would want to change the environment so much. I was also wondering how a culture that was ancient enough to be studied through the artifacts that were discovered through exploratory digs could possibly be advanced enough to have electronic security systems, erected steel sculptures in the sea, and box-like images that receive transmitted electronic –impulse images. I was at first, picturing an Indian-like tribe. When Thompson explained the significance of the Elibomotua during mating rituals and courtship I thought, “This Elibomutua sounds very similar to a car.” Just then, I had an epiphany. Elibomutua is automobile spelled backwards and Nacerima is American spelled backwards. I then proceeded to reread the article with my newfound knowledge.…

Throughout the course of the speech, Socrates describes love based upon an interaction with a woman named Diotima. After explaining to Socrates that good and bad and beautiful and ugly are more of a grey concept as opposed to a clear cut concept, she tells Socrates that love is a “great spirit” whose purpose is to fill the unknown space between humans and gods. Diotima then tells Socrates of the origin of Love, following Aphrodite’s birth, and how it relates to Love’s parents, the Penia, the embodiment of poverty, and Poros, the cunning and beautiful son of Metis. Additionally, she explains love as a cycle of continuous birth and death. She explains to Socrates that love is neither wise, nor ignorant which further illustrates her claim of love’s equivocalness.…
