A Critical Visual Analysis of a Work of Art The piece of art that I chose to do my critical visual analysis on will be the Birds of Paradise, painted by Frits van Eeden, in 1997. (Birds of Paradise) Eeden was born in Tilburg, Holland, in March 1944 and grew up in The Hague. (Frits Van Eeden) For the Birds of Paradise he used acrylic paint on canvas. This piece of art is located in the Evans Library, at Florida Tech, in Melbourne, FL. When I look at the picture I see birds helping each other, they seem to have harmony. One can get an impression of how people can co-exist with one another. The Birds of Paradise is a beautiful and bright color bird. They represent joyfulness and paradise. In this picture, they look like cranes. I don’t think there was very much media used in this picture because the colors of the background in this piece of art are so bright. Nothing has reduced the brightness of this piece of art.
Eeden considers himself as an abstract artist. (Frits Van Eeden) In the Birds of Paradise, he paints the birds as a simplified expressive aspect. In his earlier art work, you can see cubism. His older paintings were more subdued, this could be because of living in Florida has influenced his art work, which has turned to be very colorful. The genre in this piece of art shows that the birds seem to be talking and helping each other out.
Texture is an element of art that represents the pictures surface quality. In the Birds of Paradise picture, Eeden used a smooth texture that shows the calmness in his art work. In this picture, a paramount importance in texture has been demonstrated. Another element of art is the line work. It is considered one of the basic elements. Lines can be used to depict the paintings two or three dimensional images. Lines can be used to communicate moods or emotions depending on the direction that they take. Lines can show expressive qualities depending on the painting. Lines can relay information such as joy, sadness, pain,
