Believed to be standing next to Mary is Archangel Gabriel who delivers the message to Mary that she would bear the child of god. While it is believed to be him, it’s peculiar because the archangel is represented as a woman who in fact looks very similar to Mary with long wavy red hair flowing down with a widow’s peak. The archangel is shown looking at Mary while also pointing to her and holding a golden staff. Painted gold in Latin are the words “The lord is with you.” “I am the maid of the lord” is also etched into Mary’s cloak. They are both shown standing inside a house in the countryside with the door open.…

The Killer Angels is a historical Civil War novel by Michael Shaara. The book follows the three day battle of Gettysburg, switching points of view from the generals of the North to the Generals from the South. In the beginning of the novel the Spy, sent out by General Longstreet reports back findings of Northern troops moving prompting General Lee to take action. Though he does not believe the spy, he has no choice but to take the spies word and begins to move the troops towards a small town called Gettysburg. Thus begins his second invasion of the North.…

Man. The killer angel. [1] Since the dawn of civilization humanity has fought to protect what they hold dear. Whether that be freedom, religion or land, the body politic has been at war, even within their own borders. Civil War is defined as a war between regions of the same country.[2] Throughout the course of the four and a half year Civil War, many battles were fought, but none quite as pivotal as the Battle of Gettysburg. Had Lee obliged Longstreet in his persistence of a defensive strategy, the Confederate Army very well could have won the war. Instead, the Union succeeded in holding their ground atop a hillside and thus defeating the Confederate Army and ultimately winning the war. One contemplates the motivations of both the Confederates and the Union soldiers in the United States Civil War. Was it money? Power? Dominance? Michael Shaara, author of The Killer Angels suggests alternative motives. In his novel about the pivotal battle, he suggests that even though it was commonly perceived that soldiers were fighting solely…

In the book Killer Angels by Michael Shaara, he analyzes the roles of two important men in Civil War history. One is Robert E. Lee, the commander of the Confederate army, and the other is James Longstreet, a Confederate general. Both men play key parts in the battle of Gettysburg and their choices help direct the course of the whole war, both in their favor and against. While they are fighting on the same side, there are differences that distinguish them and cause conflict between them, and these differences will determine major turning points in the war.…

In the novel Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers, Lieutenant Carroll, the first leader the soldiers have in the novel, said, “’My father used to call soldiers angel warriors, because usually they get boys to fight wars. Most of you aren’t old enough to vote yet’” (44). The extremity of the youth of the soldiers was unbelievable. Through all they went through, one would assume that only grown men who have experienced the realities of the world were capable of handling the hardships in the Vietnam War. Lieutenant Carroll, ironically, was seen as the wise, older leader of the squad but he was only twenty-three year old. Today, a twenty-three year old is usually fresh out of college and still immature and ignorant to the true meaning of life. The…

Based on John, or Jacques, it means, God has been gracious; has shown favor. Obviously my parents didn’t choose this name because of it’s Scottish meaning, but knowing the background of my name and it’s origins, is very fulfilling to me. Now Dean, a name that runs in my family, I was a little more excited to find the meaning of this rather than Jackson. According to sheknows.com, Dean derives from the English term, denu, which means valley. What makes this really special is the fact that my parents had three miscarriages before me, and this means that God had been gracious in giving my parents their first child. God has been gracious in the valley - the meaning of Jackson…

In the beginning of the story the reader finds out that the family has a very ill child. Marquez opens up the story by setting an eerie mood. For example, the setting of the story takes place by the ocean and the weather is very dark and rainy. The reader then learns that the main characters child is sick. Later, Pelayo returns from the sea to find a man stuck in the mud. Pelayo and his wife Elisenda notice that he is no regular man, because he had giant wings and could not communicate with them. One can deduct, that this old man is an angle. I believe the old man is an angel because he has wings and doesn’t speak the same language. Referring to the bible, angels speak in tongues and cannot be understood by others. On the other hand, the opposition could state that the old man was a demon or the angel of death. Someone could see this man as the angel of death coming to take Pelayo and Elisenda’s sick child. Elisenda even considers beating the old man to death in fear of what he was. A priest examines the creature and cannot decide what the old man is.…
