A Brief Definition of Pornography
A brief definition of Pornography
Pornography … a term that has been heavily contested in many courts across America. But what exactly is pornography? Is a nude painting of Adam and Eve pornography? If Anna Nicole Smith appears in Penthouse magazine in an erotic position, is that art? Most people can't see the art in nude sculpture, painting, or photography. Pornography is all in the presentation. Pornography is the use of any artistic media to simply evoke only sexual stimulation.
Pornography is basically a blanket that covers all types of material such as explicit literature, photography, films, and videotapes with varying degrees of sexual content. So pornography is a very broad term. However, the key term sexual content needs to be defined. Sexual content is anything that evokes thoughts of eroticism and sexual stimulus. So this excludes art that has nude subject matter. Most art is not supposed to evoke feelings of eroticism. Art deals with the feelings of the artist and more commonly, social issues. On the other hand, if an artist takes a picture of a man having sex with a woman for the sake of taking a picture of a man having sex with a woman is pornography.
A student at the University of Oklahoma painted a picture of a woman posed in an erotic position with her breasts exposed that was entitled "Porno Barbie". This painting is not pornography. The artist did not have sexual stimuli in mind when he painted this painting. This painting was painted with a social issue in mind. This issue was pornography it self. It dealt with society's perception of "The Perfect Woman". It states that our society needs to look at women as people, not pieces of meat. IT was painted as a parody on pornography and Barbie. Barbie is looked on by young girls and even middle-aged woman as a model of what women should look like. Most girls have owned a Barbie doll and many try their best to look like her. The painting was a visual model of what is wrong with society. If it

What is the difference between erotica and pornography? Gloria Steinem tackles this question in "Erotica and Pornography". Most people picture Pornography as being hardcore, more likely to be sold in specialty adult bookstores or in sealed plastic at the newsstand. Erotica, on the other hand, includes foreplay, intimacy, and a mutually- satisfying experience. However, Steinem believes that the main differences between pornography and erotica are that individuals involved in pornography are just looking for anything to satisfy their sexual needs, while individuals involved in erotica have a particular someone in mind. Gloria Steinem states that erotica is "in the idea of positive choice, free will, the yearning for a particular person" (130). Erotica is a depiction of a love-making experience rather then just having sex. Steinem states that pornography is when the "subject is not mutual love, or love at all, but domination and violence against women" (130). In pornography, one individual is a dominant force, and erotica is when both individuals are on equal standing. 8 mile and Monsters ball are both featured on "Playboy's Top 10 Film Sex Scenes". Monsters Ball, starring Billy Bob Thornton and Halle Berry, exemplifies Gloria Steinem's view of pornography, while 8 Mile, staring Eminem and Brittney Murphy, corresponds to Steinem's view of erotica.…

In an article in Interview Magazine, Emily Prager discuses her opinions of Mattel's toy doll Barbie being designed by Jack Ryan, husband to Zsa Zsa Gabor, and designer of military missiles. The concept that a doll for young girls was designed by such a person greatly shocked Prager." Suddenly a lot of things made sense to me" says Prager. The element that Ryan designed Barbie may explain some of the key aspects of the doll itself. Although Barbie was created as a toy for girls, the sexual nature of the doll suggests it was created for the pleasure of men and envy of women. Prager compares the figure of Barbie to the kind of women who would be seen in the Playboy mansion or be a frequent guest on explicit television shows. This is the image of a mans perception of a women and the fantasy there in. The proportions of the doll greatly suggest that Ryan had created either a doll modeled after his wife or merely the fabrication of his fantasy of the ideal women. Millions of women have gone along with this fantasy and have been entranced by the unrealistic standards of appearance and false qualities of life. Sadly, more and more women have accepted these standards as their own and have even resorted to changing who they are to become what they believe to be real. This may be a major contributing factor to the rise of women seeking breast implants and or plastic surgery. Yet there could be a further explanation and meaning behind Barbie. During the time of development and release of Barbie, the feminist movement was in full swing. The concept that Barbie may have been manufactured as a weapon against these feminist groups is plausible as the image of Barbie…

“Forms of expression that are not obscene and that do not aid independently illegal conduct constitute protected under the First Amendment (Rutherglen).” The pornography that Professor Smut showed in class was obscene, that’s why the First Amendment doesn 't protect him. “The belief that pornography diminishes equal opportunities for women in employment, education, and politics and encourages men to treat women as second-class citizens (Baron 364).” City councils and courts have accepted that controversy with very little supporting evidence. An experiential study of the relationship between pornography and gender equality has significant policy and judicial effects. Obscene is offensive or disgusting by accepted standards of morality and decency.…

As it says in the text above many people may argue that porn is something that encourages the mistreatment of women. In some circumstances I would agree. Some pornography is done forcefully and both parties are not willing. I will fully admit that these types of videos are floating around the internet and it is unfortunate. However, I will also argue that many videos are consensual sex between equal parties and I do not think that this is wrong in anyway. If some people wish to view these types of vidoes, I do believe that they should have the right to view them. Pornography should be regulated as it is to protect the youth of America, however in no way should it be made illegal. This is one example of…

What is the difference between an action and a porn movie? They are both something you can rent, buy , watch , they both come in the same video formats. Thus the key difference that deferentiates pornography is its content – sex. Sex is something that is absolutely normal , and actually is the main drive behind the human evolution. Human beings are aware that except for reproduction, sex is also something that brings pleasure and is one of the basic human needs. Than what defines a pornographic movie is that first of all it is a movie(its format) and second of all it has content (sex). Therefore if movies are morally accepted in the society, and sex itself is also a normal event between two(or more) human beings , combining two “moral” statements should bring us a conclusion that pornography is moral. Pornography is a product of choice. The increased demand for pornographic movies is picturing quite vividly that people choose to watch porn on their own will, and thus there is nothing immoral in it. Pornography as a job is also usually a personal choice and thus in the whole process of creating an adult movie all the parties are willingly consenting to participate , which again is not immoral because every person is entitled to the right of his or her own body.…

In order to fully grasp the two sides of the pornography debate it is important to mention how the subject has gained so much attention in recent years. Erotica has been present in everyday life for a number of years. The origins of erotica date back to the ancient sexual pleasures found in the Kama Sutra and other depictions in the Eastern world. The moral debate over erotica however did not emerge…

The argument over the morality of pornography can take shape in many different ways. In order to take a stance, it's important to identify what exactly is included in the definition of pornography. In this paper, pornography will be defined as sexually explicit materials in which the acts depicted degrade or subordinate women. The degradation and subordination can occur through various different acts, but in an attempt to curtail the wordiness of the definition, those words are used to include any act that misrepresents or defames women. Erotica on the other hand, which is not part of the moral argument of pornography, is sexually explicit material that portrays the man and woman as more or less equals. It is with this distinction in mind, with regard to the philosophies of care ethics, utilitarianism, and deontology, that pornography is in fact wholly immoral.…

According to the U.S. Supreme Court, to be obscene, material must meet a three-prong test, "(1) an average person, applying contemporary community standards, must find that the material, as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest (i.e., material having a tendency to excite lustful thoughts); (2) the material must depict or describe, in a patently offensive way,…
