Hades
Hades is god of the underworld and is the place in itself. Hades is known as Pluto and also referred to as Aidoneus. He is usually associated with the devil in Christian belief. Hades is the most feared of all of the gods. He is called “unmerciful”. Hades is also called the “god of death”. He is both “the enemy of life” and the “renewer of life”, which can be very confusing. Hades in many pictures that I have found has a beard, a scepter, a crown and a three headed dog named Cerberus.

Hades stole his wife, Persephone, from his sister, Demeter, to live with him in the underworld. Persephone was the god of two places; the underworld and earth. Hades and his wife had three children named Furies, Dionysus and Makaria. Makaria was the goddess of a blessed death. Persephone, being both the goddess of the earth and the underworld, stays on earth for six months of the year with her husband, Hades. Hades is the brother of Zeus, Hara, Demeter and Poseidon. He was known as a greedy god, and his number subjects constantly grow. Hades never allowed any of his many subjects to leave. He is also the god of wealth because of the metals mined from underground. Hades is “unpitying and terrible, but not capricious.” Hades lies right beneath the earth in the Iliad. In the Odyssey though, Hades can be found by boat at the western edge of the world “beyond the ocean”. Odysseus, the epic hero, visited the land of the dead or Hades in search of knowledge. In the odyssey, Hades tells Odysseus that he would rather be a servant, than a god of “those that have done with life”. Hades is by far the best Greek god. He has the best realm to rule, and is the most feared and has the most subjects to rule over.

In this he enters the unknown, and is tasked with travelling to Thebes to begin his reputation. In this new world he is surrounded by dangerous mythical creatures. While on his way, he finds a damsel named Megara, whom he falls for. She can be described as another part of the Hero’s Journey, and is a temptress to Hercules. He trusts her, despite her working for Hades. Hercules finally journeys to the city and begins his reputation of defeating monsters. These monsters are sent by Hades, god of the Underworld. As Hercules begins to build a reputation by defeating all of the creatures, Hades grows frustrated by his success. Another part of this phase that can be related is the concept of shadows and tricksters. Hades acts as an evil and opposing force to Hercules, as well as his minions, Pain and Panic. They frequently become monsters or attempt to trick him, but fail every time. Finally, the last part of this phase, and considered the climax, is the supreme ordeal. Hades uses Meg as a weapon against Hercules, making him exchange his strength in an attempt to defeat him by freeing the Titans. The Titans are evil, ancient beings that were trapped to stop their destruction of Earth. Hercules, despite being normal, struggles and defeats Hades, saving Meg and the world. This part of the phase ends, and goes into the third and final phase.…
