Zeitoun Character Analysis
“Every time a crime was committed by a Muslim, that person's faith was mentioned, regardless of its relevance. When a crime is committed by a Christian, do they mention his religion?”(Eggers 37). Dave Egger states in his novel Zeitoun. Zeitoun is a nonfiction book written by Dave Eggers about the main character named Abdulrahman Zeitoun and his Muslim family that lives in New Orleans. During this time, Hurricane Katrina is about to run its course through New Orleans. Zeitoun decides to ride the hurricane out and tell his family to leave without him. Throughout the rest of the book, the Zeitouns will face many struggles that they may or may not be able to overcome. Although he has good intentions, Zeitoun makes the wrong decision by staying …show more content…
Sadly, Zeitoun's choice to stay back affected his children’s lives for the worse. When Zeitoun insisted he would stay back and he says that Kathy should take the kids and go somewhere without him he did not realize how he hurt his children's feelings. According to the book, Nademah states,”What happened to our house, mama? Where’s Daddy?” (Eggers 119). Instead of feeling safe, the kids are worrying about how their house is holding up and if their dad is doing fine. They had no idea where Zeitoun was and if they would ever see him again. Plus, when Kathy and the children left they were aware that the house was not ready for the hurricane. It is difficult to imagine how terrifying that would have been to leave Zeitoun in an unprepared house. Unfortunately, Zeitoun negatively affected his children’s lives even though he did it all in good intentions. Even worse than Zeitoun leaving a negative impact on his children's lives, he also influenced Kathy´s long term health problems. After the book, Kathy was diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder due to all the worrying about Zeitoun. The author states, “Kathy has lost her memory. Its shredded, unreliable. The

His time in prison shows him reflecting on the good he'd done, as well as praying for a better situation, but I do not recall one time at which he says to himself that he definitely should have left New Orleans. Did he not expect at all that in all the paranoia of a critical hurricane in a post-9/11 society that a Middle Eastern Muslim man would be a target for bigotry and used as a scapegoat? Although, his imprisonment was completely unwarranted, along with the charges brought against him and accusations made against him, nothing should have been a surprise to Zeitoun. Zeitoun was either unequipped with the knowledge that this country's ideals of justice are far from perfect and that the executive branch of our government is very prone to quick, harsh decisions and quick, definitive judgments… or just not very thoughtful. The results of Zeitoun's poor decision to stay in New Orleans stuck to Kathy for the rest of what we read of her life in Zeitoun. Kathy's mental healthy was sacrificed all because Zeitoun foolishly remained in the city, with knowledge that a particularly dangerous storm was…

General Zaroff, the antagonist in “The Most Dangerous Game”, can reflect as a confident and thrill-seeking person. Throughout the story General Zaroff displayed several instances where he was overconfident in himself. At the beginning of the story when Rainsford first arrived at the General Zaroff’s residence, he noticed right away that, “ About the hall were mounted heads of many animals- lions, tigers, elephants, moose, bears; larger or more perfect specimens Rainsford had never seen.”(Richard Connell 4) Also, the general hung all of his trophies from his hunts right in the dining room straight above his guests so they can stare right at them. This displays an intimidation factor to the guest as they eat revealing who is truly the hunter…

Making Okonkwo into a real person would result him to being similar to Alfred Jodl. Alfred Jodl was a German general in World War 2 and a staff officer in World War 1. From history records it was said that he planned and conduct most of Germany’s military campaign. No matter what he did, what Alfred Jodl was most known for was being very dedicated and loyal to Adolf Hitler and Germany. Even when he died, he did not admit to any of the crimes committed by him because of this dedication and actually stubbornness. Okonkwo was similar to Alfred in this sense. When Okonkwo noticed that nobody could stop the white men from expanding in power, he preferred to take his own life than submit to them. He knew that he would be miserable if he had let the white men rule him.…

Throughout this portion of the novel, the character Keiro can best be described as arrogant or impulsive and ruthless or uncaring. The first characteristic that can be used to describe him is arrogant or impulsive. Keiro displays these characteristics multiple times throughout the entire novel and in many situations. The first being when he fought the leader of the Comitatus, Jormanric, just to prove he was better than him. He battled the greatest man within the colony even though he was both smaller and weaker than Jormanric was. This can be shown when the narrator states, “Keiro was fighting for his life. He was young and fit, but Jormanric was twice his weight, old in warcraft, berserk with a battle frenzy that came on him rarely”(Fisher 124). One…

Through this captivating story, the characters are faced with so many challenges with the coming of Hurricane Katrina, prejudices, and losing everything that you’ve come to know and love. Every day Zeitoun is faced with problems due to being part of a culture that is often looked down upon and discriminated. Three cultural differences that he encountered were getting rejected from clients because of his name, accused of being a terrorist, and his religious beliefs.…

Like other victims of this disorder, John suffers from one of the symptoms called intrusion which is the unwanted recollection of experience. Michael Barton, a real-life spouse of a victim describes the sight of his wife in terror, "To see your wife laying on a bed, grabbing her ears and basically screaming out to make it stop or something like that, it does something to you."1 Similar to Michael, Kathy feels useless because she cannot help her husband due to her lack of understanding because she does not know what he is going through. Many of the citizens were either unhelped or accused of looting or other crimes. However, prior to the natural disaster, the New Orleans police department had a reputation of being corrupt. Many of the officers were commanded to “shoot looters” and “take back the city”, in which many of the looters were helpless in that situation. Some innocent civilians were even shot during the days after Katrina hit despite them committing no crimes. One factor, however, that stood out of the corruption was the racial stereotyping that was involved. Since after 9/11, muslims were seen as dangerous, often labeled “terrorist” or “Al Qaeda”. This was true for Zeitoun, for he and his friends (whom one was muslim) were accused at the train station and arrested at the Greyhound Center for suspected terrorism. The majority of the civilians left behind were African American, which they were discriminated amongst white police officers as well. This unfortunately happened in many cases, where innocent people were locked up for minor misdemeanors and bails were set at outrageous prices. A misdemeanor whose bail would be $500 under federal law was $10,000 dollars under law forces in New Orleans. This received national attention in which many people blamed both the federal and state governments for not establishing a more organized system of justice. This corruption amongst police forces in…

In the novel Zeitoun was charged for looting and put in jail however he was put in jail and had his human rights wrongly violated due to post 9/11 fear throughout America. Zeitoun, as a result, was forced to strip naked and was called a “Taliban” while he was in jail because of their generalized opinion of Muslims, believing that Zeitoun was naturally associated with a terrorist group. The book ultimately highlights how Muslims are looked at differently. This concept is so important for students at Mills High School to read, for it teaches students about islamophobia. Muslim people all over the world face issues about their race everyday and it hasn't stop. Even at our school, students are looked at differently if they wear a hijab. But students at Mills should look past the fact about islamophobia and just look at students who are muslim the same as everyone else. It also teaches students not to “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover” meaning it doesn’t matter how the person looks it really matter how the person acts or what’s inside. This is just one thing that us high schoolers should learn before we walk across the stage to shake your…
