Journal entry 7, Chapter 4, Prompt 10
There are several similarities and differences between Brent and Flaco. One similarity is that they both go on trips. Although their destinations are different, the reasons for their trips are similar: they are both trying to get away from their families. Flaco is trying to get away from his noisy and unpeaceful home, while Brent is trying to get away from his parents and to distance himself from the city that has brought him his new set of challenges. I think that this chapter is foreshadowing the importance of family to Brent. I believe that Brent will realize just how important it is to have a mother and father who love him. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have two parents who love them as much as Brent’s parents love him. Even though Brent feels good to be away from his parents now, as his trip goes on, I think he will grow lonely and he will long for his parents.

Journal entry 8, Chapter 4, Prompt 11 In the novel whirligig, Flaco has many thoughts, and becomes curious, about the life of shearwater bird. But one morning when he goes on a boat trip, he appalled to find out that the birds don’t live alone, like he thought, but rather in groups. This information about the shearwater bird suggests that others play a very important role in our lives. Although we might not get along with everyone we meet, or like everything about our friends, the people in our lives not only influence us, but they can help us when we need it. When Flaco found out that the birds live in groups, I think that he realized that most animals live in groups. I also think that he found out that the birds, and humans, don’t get along every second of every day, and that the environment that they live in isn’t always a quiet one. If Flaco didn’t find this out, and didn’t see the whirligig, I think he would have left his wife and child to try to start a new live for himself.

Remember the Grudgers of Chapter 10. These were birds that helped each other in an apparently altruistic way, but refused to help - bore a grudge against - individuals that had previously refused to help them. Grudgers came to dominate the population because they passed on more genes to future generations than either Suckers (who helped others indiscriminately, and were exploited) or Cheats (who tried ruthlessly to exploit everybody and ended up doing each other down).…

Leopold wrote, “Thinking like a Mountain,” which highlights his close observations of nature, but in a much different manner than White’s. In this piece, White describes the green light recede out of the eyes of a wolf he had just killed. “We reached the old wolf in time to watch a fierce green fire dying in her eyes. I realized then, and have known ever since, that there was something new to me in those eyes—something known only to her and to the mountain,” (Leopold, 381). A wolf is a much larger creature than the hedgehog; however, because Leopold focuses on the fire in the wolf’s eyes, he is participating in a close observation of the wolf. The wolf was hurt and dying, which allowed Leopold to approach her without fear. His close proximity to the wolf allowed for him to view the color in her eyes and to watch as it faded away. From Leopold’s close observation, he understood a balance and harmony found between the mountain and the wolf that he had just disrupted. Rather than a surface level of observation like White’s, Leopold’s was emotional and interacted with the geography as well as an animal. This observation illuminated the relationship that all living beings are involved in, as well as the repercussions that can occur when humans interact with the balance. The close observations made by White were great for the physical understanding of hedgehogs, but Leopold’s close observation focused on the spiritual bond between the living animals and its…

Every time someone tries to take care of the bird, the bird is still caged and imprisoned. Eventually, a kind, yet sick, girl understands the bird’s pain. She lets go of the bird and lets him roam through the sky. In the text it states, “As he leaves the room the little bird coos, ‘Oh, please let me fly under the rice moon tonight!’ But the man does not understand the swallow’s language. When the girl wakes suddenly in the middle of the night, the first thing she sees through her fever is a small cliff swallow blinking at her from behind the bars of a rattan cage, She knows too well how terrible it is to be kept inside.” This is an important moment because this is when the bird is finally going to get freedom. This is a crucial moment because the bird finally met someone who felt the same kind of imprisonment as him and decided to free him. This helps us to understand that no matter who or what you are, you don’t deserve to be trapped. The theme of this story is ‘freedom.’ It is about how no one wants to be trapped and taken care of. It is about how everyone wants to be free even if it risks your…

After reading the quote a few more times and looking at it from “outside the box” I realized that the birds represent people. Throughout our lives we see examples of this same behavior. For example, in high school there are many “flocks” who all dress, talk, and express themselves similarly. Why? Because it makes them feel safe. The problem with it is that they spend so much time doing things just like the rest of their “flock” that when they graduate they have a hard time adjusting to the real world. They didn’t learn enough about other “flocks” to be able to function outside of their comfort zone.…
