Zaroff: A Narrative Analysis
To start with, food is a basic need for survival. When he found where Zaroff was living he brought up food. He told Ivan who he was and that “[he was] hungry”(Conell 23) . If you don’t have food you die. He can’t call people for food or help, because even if he had a phone, it wouldn't have had worked because he was in a remote location, there is no way he could get good cell service, and his phone would’ve been destroyed because of the water anyways. His first thought when he got on the island was food. He thought to himself that since there were gunshots there were men, and “[w]here there [were] men, there [would be] food”(Conell 22). His instinct was to worry about food first. It makes sense for him to have to worry about food eventually.
