1. Describe the strategic plan of Zappos three C’s.
Zappos has three main core strategic plans for making itself successful in business,
Company Culture, Customer Service and Clothing. All these three core objectives of the company make Zappos one the most desirable and copied business structures in the world today. These three C’s have changed the way we view and feel how a company should be administered today’s world. Although Zappos has a unique way of operating itself, it has taken some basic core values and strategic ideas from some other successful company’s such as Starbucks, Amazon and Nordstrom, but most importantly a big percentage of way things are done are voted in by company employees. This is what makes unique because it employees feel like they are heard and considered.
The first C, Company Culture, is most import C for the interior of the company’s structure. This C deals with how everyone in the company relates to each other and how employees interact with customers. The entire culture is basses on ten important core values: Deliver wow through service, embrace and drive change, create fun and a little weirdness, be adventurous, creative and openminded, pursue growth and learning, build open and honest relationships with communication, build positive and team and family spirit, do more with less, be passionate and determined, and be humble (http://about.zappos.com/our-unique-culture/ zappos-core-values). This system of core values encourages employees to become friends inside and out of the office and is thought that when people feel like they are working with friends they become more productive and efficient at work. It was once said by Hsieh, “Zappos is a lifestyle”. Zappos lifestyle over the years has gained interest by many other companies, media and schools, and in 2009 Zappos began to have daily guided tours in there Las Vegas campus.     Zara’s core competencies can be divided into four areas: process development, distribution, marketing and integrated business structure (referred to Appendix 1). Zara’s unique process development allowed Zara to produce in a shorter cycle time and more quickly response to the customer’s needs than other competitors. When the fashion season started, Zara’s designers attended trade fairs and ready-to-wear fashion shows to translate the latest trend of fashion into their design. Zara’s product development staff, at the meanwhile, researched the market through different retail stores and university campuses to understand customer’s preferences. Zara’s IT system, on the other hand, played a key role on the internal communications. This helped Zara’s managers constantly track the sales data and therefore capture the customer’s desire. Moreover, Zara’s centralized distribution facility gave the chain efficiency. Both internal and external products passed through the distribution center, and were inspected and shipped immediately. Then, to increase the delivery speed, Zara scheduled shipments by time zone. Products were shipped by truck or air and were usually delivered to worldwide stores within 24-48 hours. In contrast to other companies’ outsourcing activities, Zara’s in-house manufacturing created a rapid product turnover since its products were limited and the inventories were strictly controlled.     Zappos’ culture is one that we all dream about, one that promotes friendship, equality, and happiness. Bauer and Erdogan define culture as an organization’s personality, which refers to a system of shared assumptions, values, and beliefs that show employees what is appropriate and inappropriate behavior. Zappos’ culture was considered an outlier to say the least, one that was driven off of “inspiration rather than motivation” according to CEO Tony Hseih. It was the goal of the organization to empower their employees and make them feel apart of something “bigger than themselves” an organization that went against the grain of “normal” corporate culture. Zappos’ leadership viewed the company culture as the key differentiator between their peers. It was this school of thought that would give them a competitive advantage over their peers. It was the organization’s goal to help build a “better world and happier place” and in order to do so they established their “10 Core Values.” Now normally, senior leadership would normally create these values themselves however, Zappos' acted differently. They asked their employees to decide on the core values. These “organic controls” helped ensure Zappos achieve their future success. Bauer and Erdogan believe that organic controls help shape employee behavior through shared values, and developing a common understanding of strategy. By letting the “people” have ownership over their own destiny led to a tremendous amount of employee commitment.
