1. The two main settings in “Young Goodman Brown” are the forest and the colonial village of Salem, Massachusetts. The two different times of the setting are very important to the symbolization of the story. In the beginning of the story, Goodman Brown sets out on his journey at sunset; to set out at sunset it symbolized darkness, which in turn symbolizes evil. This presets the tone of the story. In the end when he is returning home, the time changes and it is daylight, and this symbolized innocence and a sort freedom from the terror he had just experienced.…

However the knowledge that Young Goodman Brown is after would never allow this to happen. As presented in the story Young Goodman Brown became extremely paranoid and died an unhappy man. His temptation and his success in getting what he wanted changed the way his life was forever. The temptation of evil and knowledge for the unknown are major components to Hawthorne’s story including this one. The change in gender roles of Adam and Eve along with a change in setting lead to story that can greatly represent how the apple would make a person change in a world much closer to…
First, we will start with Goodman Brown. He is the main character in Nathaniel Hawthorne 's short story titled "Young Goodman Brown". "Hawthorne could not escape the influence of Puritan society" (McCabe). I think that Hawthorne 's own past is and complications are reveled in his story about Goodman Brown. I believe that Goodman Brown has had a rough past and is trying to reach beyond his past in order to reach heaven. Goodman has some major problems with his wife, Faith, and everyone else in his community. I think that he is seeing everyone as perfect people, but he is having impure thoughts about himself and his past. In order to deal with these problems within himself, he is making up that everyone has this awful bad side. When he goes into the forest, he believes he is talking to the devil with looks much like his grandfather. The devil is feeding him bad thoughts about everyone he knows, even his own father and his wife Faith. Next, I believe that Goodman Brown has had a rough past and in order for him to overcome this within himself…

“Young Goodman Brown” is about a normal religious man goes on a journey. In the story, the characters that are mentioned are Young Goodman Brown, Faith, Goody Cloyse, Deacon Gookin, the Old Man, and the minister. In the story, Young Goodman Brown goes on a journey into the forest and meets an Old Man who tells him things to make him doubt his faith. After seeing many things, he begins to doubt his faith. Then, he finally gives in and his opinion on everyone he looked up to is changed and cannot look at everyone the same anymore. In Young Goodman Brown, a theme that is conveyed by use of symbolism throughout the story is that many people hide behind their religion to make them seem good when they are actually liars and sinners.…
In the story, Young Goodman Brown comes from a puritan community that has a strong sense of dystopia. Everyone must be the same and have same faith. However, just outside the edge of the community lays a darkened forest demonstrating the role of the devil , the role of otherness. Yet within all communities come curious individuals such as Goodman Brown who search for meaning beyond the boundaries of his community. Hawthorne notes “ he took a dark a dreary road, darkened by all the gloomiest trees of the forest”(Hawthorne, 1). This goes to show that the forest is seen as a place that one should not enter for bad things lie within this devilish outside world for “ a devilish Indian may be behind every tree”(1). Hawthorne’s setting illustrates the role of otherness by painting a dark and frowned upon outside world. The setting attempts to limit the characters to the boundaries of their community through the use of eerie surroundings. Regardless of this setback the main character continues to feel ostracised and thus searches the otherness that surrounds his everyday life. The community of salem is holding onto their traditional outlooks on otherness, pushing away the things they can not relate to, the outside world. But, as a community they would be stronger if they were to be more inclusive and took the time to learn from these beyond…
Ultimately in life each person goes through the process of the demise of innocence, because evil is omnipresent. Everyone has a shadow side to himself. Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story "Young Goodman Brown" displays a protagonist's archetypal journey to the discovery of evil in mankind. Hawthorne's use of the threshold motif depicts the archetypal struggle between good and evil and the inevitable loss of innocence. Set in the Puritan age, Goodman Brown embarks on a voyage into the dark forest where he uncovers the evil in everyday society. Prophetically, Goodman Brown begins his trip at sunset in the streets of Salem, Massachusetts. Hawthorne's didactic narrative exemplifies loss of innocence through the use of archetypal motifs, symbols, and imagery.…
It is revealed that his family history isn’t so holy after all and that he’s been living a lie this whole time (Balcarcel). The fact the man also looked similar to him gives a hint that it might be dream since little error or coincidences in dreams are common. I don’t believe that it’s a dream, I believe that the beginning of the story happened. Not a lot is known of Goodman Brown like his profession or intention of leaving at night but everything that happened in the beginning can be explained. Goodman Brown"s dream can be analyzed to understand what Hawthorne is portraying in the story. The dream is set in the woods because they are very dark and easy to get lost in, as Goodman Brown is facing his own internal darkness and losing his faith. As he walks further into the woods, he is actually going further into his mind. Each character he encounters is of the utmost religious faith. When he sees them at the witch meeting, he is trying to validate in his mind his own lack of religious faith. As he walked through the forest with the dark stranger, who bore a striking resemblance to his father, Brown had to confront that maybe all in his world was not as it appeared to be. Every person that he had a high regard for was challenged on…
