Yoruba and Maori Body Art
For centuries body art and ornamentation has been performed in different cultures across the world to signify various meanings. Through anthropological research, we find that scarification, piercings, and permanent and nonpermanent tattooing are forms of body art and ornamentation that can be seen as a visual language done for many reasons. Schildkrout (2004) mentions "Skin, as a visible way of defining individual identity and cultural difference is not only a highly elaborated preoccupation in many cultures; it is also the subject of wide ranging and evolving scholarly discourse in the humanities and social sciences" (pg. 1, para. 2). The procedures of body art and ornamentation is an acutely painful experience but critical to an individual 's self-discovery and building a place within their society. In this paper, I will analyze facial scarification in the Yoruba tribe and facial tattooing in the Maori tribe.
The West Africa Yoruba tribe wears scar stripes on their faces. "Yoruba facial stripes are only produced by scarification and not by paint or tattoos" Orie (2011, para. 2). Anthropologists have noted that scarification is the predominate type of body marking among African tribes. African cultures use scarification markings as identifiers amongst tribes as a source of separation from outsiders. As an example, men, women, and children are often governed to scarification of their face to divide their tribe from other tribes in Africa. However, Orie (2011) states " [...] not all Yoruba people have facial stripes. A person whose face is scarred with stripes is referred to as Okola 'the one with facial stripes ', whereas those without them are called Oboro 'plain not striped face" (para. 2). Furthermore, various scarification facial patterns exist with both cheeks marked. Normally scarification rituals are performed during early stages of infancy.     The Wodaabe tribes of Niger apply face paint in their famous festival of beauty known as the Gererwol Festival (African 1). In this festival the men apply charismatic colors of gold and rich colors of red on their face and dance to win the hearts of the surrounding women. They also paint their cheekbones and noses with colors like yellow and red to draw attention to their eyes and their facial bone structure.     The purpose of this essay is to critically examine the multicultural perspectives of Te Whāriki (Ministry of Education [MOE], 1996), the early childhood education curriculum of Aotearoa. In order to accomplish this, I will examine the term ‘multiculturalism’, its place in early childhood education and its historical context, and the concepts of individualistic and collectivist approaches to childrearing practices. I will explore the diverse cultural values and beliefs of Te Ao Māori, Pasifika people, and Indigenous people of Australia, and endeavour to unpack such cultural practices in regards to Te Whāriki (MOE, 1996). Helder Cāmara (1971) once stated “Keep your language. Love its sounds, its modulation, its rhythm. But try to march together with men of different languages” (p.61). Not only is Aotearoa babbling with a number of different languages, but it consists of a myriad of cultures, and Ramsay (2004) perceives the term ‘culture’ to be that which “profoundly affects how we perceive the world and relate to people, objects and nature” (p.104). Multiculturalism is defined by languages, religions, diverse cultures, and also in the forming of reciprocal relationships in order to comprehend, and acknowledge, each other’s beliefs and values (Pluto, 2010). It is suggested in Te Whāriki (MOE, 1996) that multiculturalism is evident in Aotearoa, through its “diversity of beliefs about childrearing practices, kinship roles, obligations, (and) codes of behaviour” (p. 18). A sense of such cultural relationships surely would have been in place in Aotearoa by the estimated first migration of Polynesians and Te Āo Māori in the mid 1200’s (Irwin & Walrond, 2012).     There are three main tribes in Nigeria, which are: the Igbos, the Hausas and the Yorubas. Over the years, these three tribes broke into more than 50 little ethnic groups. Among these three, Yorubas has proven to be the most dominant. The Yoruba are one of the largest African ethnic groups south of the Sahara Desert.
