1) Description- Yoga is the balance of mind and body exercise and the attempt to attain self-enlightenment. There are many different types of yoga and hundreds of schools. The most common types of yoga are Hatha Yoga, Raja yoga, Jnana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, and Karma Yoga. Yoga is considered to be the only type of physical activity to be a complete exercise because it works all of your internal organs and glands that may not be worked by lifting.
2) History- Yoga was developed in India about 5000 years ago. The ancients wanted freedom, long and healthy life and live with a heightened self esteem. Yoga was inscribed on palm leaves thousands of years ago and can be found on ancient sculptures. The history of yoga can be split into three parts: pre-classical, classical, and modern period. It was developed by the Indus-Sarasvati civilization in the northern India, the word "Yoga" was mentioned first of all in the Rig Veda, the oldest sacred texts.
3) Benefits- There is an abundance of benefits from practicing yoga on a regular basis. This includes improving your posture because you are increasing your body’s strength and flexibility. This happens when you use your deep abdominal muscles to maintain each pose. With a strengthened core, you will sit and stand taller, therefore improving your overall posture. Even though yoga is not focused on aerobic fitness, it can help to improve your performance by emphasizing deep breathing and expanding your lung capacity. Yoga is also known for having a positive effect on heart disease. It can lower your blood pressure and slow your heart rate, which lowers your risk for heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. Yoga is highly known for its ability to lower stress and make a person calmer. It does this by quieting the body’s “mind chatter” that often causes stress. By depending on deep breathing and focusing on your breath, your mind calms itself. It also creates a calming feeling by lowering levels of the hormones.

    Bikram yoga was developed thirty years ago by Bikram Choudhury, a renowned Hatha Yoga Master. It is a specific yoga practice that is carried out in 105˚ F at 40% humidity for 90 minutes. Some studies and practitioners have suggested that Bikram yoga practice has positive impacts on physical health as well as decreasing stress and anxiety. There were certain inclusion criteria for participation in this study. Age was not an exclusion and participants ranged in age from 18 to over 60 years of age. This study sought to interview active students of Bikram yoga who have been practicing consistently for at least the last eight weeks, at a minimum of three times per week. Students meeting the requirements at the Bikram yoga studios in San Antonio were invited to complete the survey instrument from November 16 through November 26, 2011. Seventy-five students responded to the survey. The results indicated that there are significant positive results from regularly practicing Bikram yoga. Since Bikram yoga encourages students to hold poses in a “hot” room it increases heart rate and acts as a cardiovascular exercise without the high impact normally associated with cardio exercises. The results of the survey instrument yielded over 50% of respondents reporting an answer of “somewhat better” for all of the questions, indicating that most respondents see a benefit in their practice. Additionally, stress and anxiety decreased with over 80% of respondents reporting somewhat to much less anxious and stressed.     In the Hindu religion, the founder was not one person alone. It is believed by historians that the Aryans developed Hinduism over 3500 years ago. The Hindu religion was developed around the caste system. The caste system was the social class of India. At the top to the caste system were the Brahmins or the priests.
