In 1979, The Knack performed one of their hit singles “My Sharona” in front of a packed house. This song represented the alternative/pop rock genre, and was considered a major hit in the late 1970s. As a child, I remember hearing the song on the radio and I enjoyed the catchy and memorable tune. Although I did not quite understand the lyrics at the time, my dad listened to it often when he worked in the garage. This essay will first describe a variety of important musical characteristics that are displayed within the performance. Next, it will discuss how this song was a launchpad for a future song that became just as popular a few years later. Lastly, before providing my own personal critique, I will discuss how the song assisted The Knack with getting back together nearly 20…

Earlier this afternoon, I went to Andy’s Jazz Club on 11 East Hubbard Street in Chicago, and watched John Bany perform. John Bany is said to be one of Chicago’s most creative bass players. Bany was born and raised in Ohio, but has had the privilege of calling Chicago his home for a little over thirty years. John Bany studied bass with Charlie Medcalf, Harold Roberts and Richard Topper, whom all just so happen to be bassists with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and he also holds a degree in music from the Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio. John Bany won the United States Air Force Worldwide Talent Contest in 1964, and then he went out on the road with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra and successively served as the jazz editor for the International Society of Bassists Magazine, from 1984 through 1988.…

Hans Zimmer was born in Frankfurt, Germany in September 12, 1957. As a child, he began playing piano since he was three years old. Although he was receiving piano lessons, he quickly became uninterested after only two weeks of piano lessons. Even more astounding he decided to become a composer at age six. His father died when he was six and that is when he decided to become serious about music, because it was his refuge as he quotes, “It was my way of calming the demons in me or at the same time sometimes letting them roar, letting them rip, letting the monster out and seeing that it wasn't so scary being able to look it in the eye," (International Dictionary of Films and Filmmakers 2).…
